Deciding your future based on blood types?
dy1586 July 2006
I had heard before that some young women choose their future husbands, just based on what their blood type is. Any guy who is of blood B type is just being shunned upon. So, watching this romantic comedy which is based on a college student who wants to choose her own future husband by herself, not based all those silly ways which her cousin swore by is kind of interesting.

Anyhow, I did saw the DVD version of this movie some time back. Through those dubbing and subtitles.

Young-bin and Ha-mi meet by accident after a row over him ruining her cellphone. She thinks he and she were destined to meet, but the problem is, he has blood-type B. But Ha-mi's cousin wanted Young-bin out of Ha-mi's life just because she found what was his blood type.

But Ha-mi's blood type is A, and it's often being said that girls of that blood type are firm in what they are doing. Thus all the comedy and drama coming in.

I did have a good time watching it.

Silly, yet refreshing. Korean style.

This film is nothing really special and for some guy not accustomed with Korean popular culture, almost incomprehensible. Of course, being Asian and all, there is probably a theme of male superiority and female submissiveness that feels natural to them and weird to us.

Nevertheless, the film is funny enough. Crazy chick tries to split her roommate from her boyfriend because he is type B. Nice premise, however, this only takes a very short time, the rest is just the guy being a jerk and the girl being really patient. In the end, he just falls in love with her, contrary to the character he showed until then.

Bottom line: easy to watch romantic movie, with Korean quirks, something like a reversal of The Taming of the Shrew.

Dammit!

Warning: Spoilers
I should really start to trust the IMDb ratings more. But I guess that I want to make up my own mind. Bad idea.

This was an utterly worthless movie. The guy is a total jerk throughout the movie. You would think that there's some twist in the end but he's still just a jerk. The only thing he does is to say that he's sorry. Still, that doesn't warrant the actions of the roomie. She's just being a crazy bitch that sane people would stay away from. OK, the movie is supposed to exaggerate things but this was just too much for me.

I love Korean movies but there has to be some bad ones as well I guess. Maybe I should not watch love movies without my girlfriend as well ;)

Very poor concept

I hope people will not think male Koreans are jerks and jackasses because of this movie. There are a lot of movies that shows lovestory based on fortune but not this one. Do not watch this one.

Sometimes it's OK to say goodbye

Warning: Spoilers
My Boyfriend Is Type B uses the superstition that it's possible to tell a person's personality from his blood type to explore a relationship between Ha-mi and her type B boyfriend Young-bin. The two meet when they accidentally exchange cell phones and Ha-mi decides they are fated to be together in spite of warnings from her cousin, an experienced match- maker, that a type B boyfriend will mistreat her.

And sure enough, mistreat her he does. Over and over again in excruciating, painful detail. With no apparent remorse, or even any sense that anything he does is wrong. OK, we get the message: Young-bin is an insensitive clod and Ha-mi should end the relationship and move on with her life.

But wait. After watching almost an entire movie trending towards one inescapable conclusion, the audience is then treated to ten minutes or so of the film reversing course and trying to convince us that these two young lovers belong together after all. How special. Young-bin is still a selfish jerk, but a selfish jerk who really, really, really cares about Ha-mi.

I guess if you're a young woman who believes that any boyfriend, no matter how bad, is better than no boyfriend at all, then My Boyfriend Is Type B is for you. For everyone else, don't waste your time on this nonsense.
