Profanity

  • F-word three times, sh't once.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The four siblings and Anita's husband Jim have a "toast" to Anita after her death with an unlabeled bottle of "hard" alcohol. The bottle of alcohol is shown on the kitchen island approximately 1/3 full. The glasses have approximately three swallows of alcohol. After clinking their glasses for the toast everyone is shown taking a drink of the alcohol. No one is shown inebriated.
  • After Anita's death her daughter and two of her sons are shown playing poker and using their mom's pills instead of poker chips. The daughter places her bet with a pill and a large amount of pills are shown on the table as the poker pot.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of Anita's sons has difficulty opening the box of his mom's ashes so the ashes can be spread. The other two sons try taking the box. With all three fighting over the box it rips open. This causes a large, noticeable ash cloud. Followed by two of the sons getting ash in their hair, on their face, one gets ash in their eye and all three sons are shown with gray ash on their clothing for the rest of the scene. Their sister standing nearby doesn't get any ash on her. All four of them are shown taking turns pouring out their mom's ashes in front of what they're sure is their grandpa's grave.
  • Most of the humor is dry or mildly sarcastic with some mildly "dark" or morbid jokes about death and dying.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The hospice nurse talks with Anita's daughter and one of her sons in a vague way about how to use Morphine to kill their mom. (Some people call this ending suffering, a mercy killing or assisted suicide.) The two siblings are shown pushing their moms morphine IV button six times while she's sleeping. Anita stops snoring and the two siblings come to the realization they just killed their mom.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • After Anita's health has declined she tells her son to turn off her IV feeding tube. He doesn't want to turn off the feeding tube and shows resistance. Anita insists that she wants her feeding tube turned off. He finally turns it off so his mom can starve to death. Unfortunately, this doesn't help Anita die very quickly. Much later in the movie when she hasn't died the son asks the hospice nurse if Anita is like a camel living off it's hump to stay alive.
