Rachel Anderson and Mary Duong in ‘Bananas’ (Photo: Mia Forrest).
Before SXSW was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mary Duong and Rachel Anderson’s short-form docuseries Bananas was due to screen in the festival’s Episodic Pilot Competition.
After a heartwarming response to the series on Sbs On Demand, the Queensland filmmakers had been excited to increase their global reach. The cancellation was gutting – no less so because Duong was already in the Us. It threw plans for the foreseeable future into the air.
However, for at least the next month, Bananas will stream for free globally on Vimeo as part of a special showcase of works from the SXSW Episodic Competition. Also included are comedies Bored, Cooper’s Bar, The Dream and This Isn’t Me, and documentary Homecoming: The Journey of Cardboard. On April 23, there will be a virtual Q&a with all the creators.

Tom Hanks tweeted Sunday night that he and wife Rita Wilson are feeling better following their coronavirus diagnosis.
"Two weeks after our first symptoms and we feel better," he wrote.
He also encouraged people to practice social-distancing (the recommended guidelines are to keep six feet between yourself and another person): "Sheltering in place works like this: You don't give it to anyone — You don't get it from anyone. Strangely, Fka Twigs has been a staple of the MTV Video Music Awards in recent years, but hardly ever in categories audiences get to vote on. The offbeat British singer-songwriter has been nominated eight times, but almost all of those have been in the professional categories that aren’t decided by the public, but by music insiders. She has three nominations in those categories this year for “Cellophane” (watch it above). Will she be a first-time winner?
Her first three nominations came in 2015: Best New Artist for “Pendulum” and Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography for “Two Weeks.” The New Artist nom was her only one to date where fans got to vote, and they picked Fetty Wap for his breakthrough video “Trap Queen” instead. Meanwhile, the Visual Effects prize went to Skrillex, Diplo and Justin Bieber‘s “Where Are U Now,” and Cinematography was awarded to Flying Lotus...

The 2000s were a decade when medium and small-budgeted movies could do big business before being forgotten. We look back as to why.
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller, quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly toward the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Patrick Swayze's tell-all memoir will hit stores just two weeks after he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer.
The late Dirty Dancing and Ghost star died on Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 57.
He revealed plans to write about his life story with his wife Lisa Niemi back in February, and fans will have the chance to read all about his cancer fight, his career and his love for Niemi in The Time of My Life on 29 September.
In the tome, Swayze reveals he thought his cancer diagnosis was "a cruel joke".
He adds, "I couldn't be dying - I had too much to live for!"
Swayze refused to take any drugs throughout his battle because he feared it would make him incapable of working on his new TV series The Beast.
He writes, "I never took any painkillers since they dull not only your pain but also your sharpness."
He admits he was "determined to live until a cure is found", but eventually came to terms with the fact that he was slowly losing his fight when he learned the tumour had spread to his liver: "I began thinking to myself, I've had more lifetimes than any 10 people put together, and it's been an amazing ride.
"...So this (dying) is Ok."
The tragic actor's body will reportedly be cremated on Friday and his ashes spread across his beloved ranch in New Mexico.

Looking for one last fix of Kirk, Spock and Bones before the summer ends? Well, you're in luck, because J.J. Abrams' Star Trek is returning to IMAX theatres for an additional two week engagement starting this weekend. I'm not sure if they're hoping to give their box office numbers a little boost to try and pass The Hangover or Up, but one thing's for sure: there's no chance in hell that Star Trek will be able to catch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the highest grossing movie of the year. Either way, Star Trek seems to have been one of the biggest crowd pleasers of the summer, and well worth another look. Personally I'm looking forward to revisiting it on Blu-ray come November (full DVD release specs over at DVD Active [1]). Check your local listings or visit the IMAX website [2] to find out if Star Trek is playing near you.

Social gaming company Zynga, creator of several popular Facebook games including FarmVille, is growing at a pace that would make even its most productive virtual agrarians jealous, adding 12 million players in the last two weeks. The 20% boost in overall users can largely be attributed to FarmVille's 5.3 million active users per day, the most on Facebook, though other Zynga titles like Mafia Wars and Texas Hold 'Em also contribute high traffic volumes.
Zynga's most recent growth spurt marks a 50% jump in users over the past month, a testament to social gaming's popularity on sites like MySpace and Facebook (especially the latter) where social gaming has jumped out ahead of traditional online retailing in both popularity and revenue. If Zynga's revenues have jumped proportionally to its user base, that should peg its annual net take at around $150 million, quite a feat considering the social network itself is expected to net just $550 million this year.

Just two weeks after launch, in measuring its success, Hunch has determined that its decision engine has had, well, measured success. According to a blog post by co-founder Chris Dixon, Hunch is doing "pretty well, although we still have a ways to go."
Hunch answers users' questions by asking the user more questions. For instance, you can ask anything from "what author should I read?" to "what is my bedroom personality?" Hunch then asks you a short series of questions, comparing your responses to others' and narrowing the possible field of outcomes until it comes up with a series of prioritized answers or recommendations.
Hunch has created its own metric, which measures the number of times users click "Yes" to one of the top three results without clicking "No" to any of the others. When the site launched in beta with 500 topics, the success rate was about 70%. Since going public,...

ErcBoxOffice is reporting that even though Seth Rogen's "The Green Hornet" was the only film scheduled for June 25th, 2010, Sony still decided to move it back by two weeks to July 9th, 2010. And the old "Hornet" date has now been filled by Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups," which Sony moved from Spring to Summer. Columbia Pictures is doing a little release date shifting this week. According to ercBoxOffice, the studio has moved Michel Gondry's action comedy The Green Hornet, which will star Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow, from June 25, 2010 to a July 9, 2010 release. The move makes room for the all-star cast comedy Grown Ups -- which will star the likes of Kevin James, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph -- which has been moved from March 12 to June 25, 2010. This move wedges Green Hornet between Toy Story 3, which drops a week before, and Twilight: New Moon, which hits theaters the following week. And if you ask me, that's not a bad move, just not a great one. As we've seen this summer, getting caught in the clutter is possible -- just ask some of those May releases. THR is reporting that even though "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is scheduled to appear in theaters on July 14th, the film's IMAX release will be delayed by two weeks till July 29th. The reason for the delay is due to a contract between Paramount and IMAX that gives "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" a full dedicated month to the film. Since "Transformers 2" opens on June 24th, "Harry Potter 6" cannot appear on IMAX screens till late July. "Half-Blood Prince" contains 12 minutes of 3-D footage that moviegoers can experience only through IMAX. "There will obviously be some consumers that choose to wait for the IMAX version with its 3-D scenes or will choose to see it for a second time, but we no not believe this will be enough to offset the negative impact from the move," said analyst Eric Wold. The Hollywood Reporter says that although Warner Bros. Pictures will release Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters on July 15, it will only hit two IMAX screens in New York and Los Angeles that day -- the wide IMAX release won't be until July 29th. The two-week delay is fallout from the decision by Warner Bros. to push "Potter" from its originally-scheduled November 2008 opening. The new July opening overlaps with IMAX's month-long window dedicated to Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen . Still, "Potter" contains 12 minutes of 3-D footage that moviegoers can experience only through IMAX, so that could cushion the blow.

IMAX has pushed the IMAX release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince back two weeks to give Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a four week run. Apparently Paramount signed a deal with IMAX to have the sequel shown exclusively in IMAX theatres for four full weeks if Michael Bay used IMAX cameras into the film's production. When Warner Bros moved the release of Half Blood Prince back to July 15th, they didn't take into account Transformer's IMAX exclusivity. So now Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince won't be shown on IMAX screens until July 29th 2009, two weeks after its theatrical 35mm release. Will people wait to pay a premium price to see the few 3D sequences in the IMAX version?...

This is just not a great year for IMAX. It was recently discovered (by investors, so claims THR) that since IMAX made a contractual arrangement last year to give Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a full 4 week run in its theaters, the IMAX debut of the new Harry Potter movie will be delayed by two weeks. IMAX made that arrangement with Paramount last year before Warner Brothers moved the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from November to July. And since Transformers hits on June 24th, its month-long run won't end until July 22nd, meaning Harry Potter won't show in IMAX until July 29th. To make matters worse, this new Harry Potter will have 12 minutes of scenes converted to 3D, just like Order of the Phoenix did back in 2007 as well. Sorry Jonas Brothers, but the American public just aren't that into you. What else could be the explanation for "Madea Goes to Jail," Tyler Perry's latest, guy-dressed-as-heavyset-old-woman movie outgrossing a 3-D concert film featuring three chart-topping and sexually abstinent teenage boys?Grossing a lackluster $12.7 million this weekend, "Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience" was soundly beat by "Madea" which took in an additional $16.5 million for a two-week total of just under $65 million. "Jonas Brothers" had been predicted to take the weekend's top-spot, based on the success of last year's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of ...

Well folks, we have just over two weeks before the Oscars and I will probably only do one more Oscar prediction piece before that time with all the bells, whistles and user polls -- that is unless something drastically changes, which is rather unlikely. This week I have made only two changes, the first being with Best Director as Danny Boyle now tops my chart as his win with the Directors Guild pretty much sealed the deal. The only other change comes in the Best Supporting Actress category and I am going all the way back to the prediction I made on November 20, 2008 in this category and going with Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona after I bumped her all the way down to third last week. Let me explain my thinking behind this one. The way I looked at it the Actor, Actress and Supporting Actor are three categories that are all sewn up.

In perhaps the most bizarre casting combination announcement ever, we’ve now learned that Roman Polanski’s The Ghost has added Tom Wilkinson and Jim Belushi to its cast (Never did I think those two people’s names would ever be used in one sentence in conjunction with a film). The two join Pierce Brosnan, Ewan McGregor, Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams. This completes major casting and makes the film ready to start shooting in Berlin on February 4th. Adapted from the novel by Robert Harris (by Polanski and Harris himself), The Ghost tells the story of a Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), a former British Prime Minister who’s in the process of writing his memoirs. When the death of a colleague disrupts his life, a ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is called in to assist him in completing the book. But when the ghostwriter digs a little deeper into his subject’s life,...

Fox's soap opera/reality series Nashville is the winner -- though not in a good way. It's the first new series of the 2007-08 season to be pulled from the primetime schedule.
Nashville debuted on September 14th and follows a group of aspiring country singers as they navigate their way through the Tennessee music city. Participants include Jamey Johnson, Matt Jenkins, Lindsey Hager, Jeff Allen, Clint Moseley, Chuck Wicks, Rachel Bradshaw, Mika Combs, and Sarah Gunsolus.
The series debuted to a disappointing 2.7 million and viewership dropped to 2.2 million the following week. As a result, Fox has pulled the show from the schedule effective immediately.
Encore airings of K-Ville will take over the Nashville slot on Friday nights for the next two weeks. After that, The Next Great American Band will take over the night with three two-hour episodes.
Fox maintains that episodes of Nashville will "be rescheduled at a later date.
