A Disney Movie Aimed at Older Kids and Younger Teens
scissorhands_emily12 June 2005
This was a Disney Channel Original Movie, so it can't be expected to be a masterpiece, but it was entertaining and had a good theme.

It centers around Katelin who is one of the best figure skaters around where she lives. A Russian figure skating coach decides to help make her the best, but her parents won't pay for her to go to boarding school. By pulling a few strings Natasha(the Russian coach) manages to get her a full scholarship at the same school, but for hockey instead. Katelin has to work extra hard if she wants to be the best. As well as keeping it a secret that she's a figure skater because all the girls on the hockey team despise figure skaters.

The movie was good. The story was somewhat unrealistic(like in the aspect that she gets a full scholarship for a hockey team), but not way predictable. It entertained me and had me rooting for Katelin. I'd recommend it to all kids around 14 or so and younger. And to parents if they can understand that it's aimed at the kids and not them.

I liked it
lawoptions17 August 2005
This is not an Academy Award nominee, but it was an enjoyable movie that I could watch with my kids. While I admit that the main actress' tears were not great (I thought that part was forced myself), I basically enjoyed the movie, so much that, because I had missed the very beginning the first time around, I watched the whole movie all over again to see how it began. It was an enjoyable escapist movie that we could all get into. Plus I love figure skating. I especially liked that the brother and sister could finally "play together nice." OK, I'm a mom, but still I thought this was a nice flick. Given that it's a kid's movie, there wasn't any blood and guts, but there was nice tension and an interesting choice for the main character to make. Various parts of it also made me laugh remembering the movie "The Cutting Edge." Toe Pick!!!

Not a bad family movie but not a good movie either
snapeing_turtle28 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This was a somewhat typical Disney "feel good" movie. Disney does a pretty good job in making movies where the main character triumphs over the odds. This one is no exception. The main character has her obstacles and overcomes them.

The problems with this movie lie in the acting and the errors. The main character was a standard Disney blonde and may one day become a good actress, but she currently has very little range. Happy and pouty. That's about it. The Mighty Ducks was a hockey movie with heart. And it at least attempted to be believable (at least until they started going into the sequels). This one didn't even bother to *try* to be accurate. The figure skating nationals are not a one day, one program thing. They don't use the special lighting except for the exhibition. Don't even get me started on the whole robot scene. I am also pretty sure that the main character didn't do any triple jumps (her spins were slow, her spiral sub-standard, and her footwork practically non-existent) and probably never would have qualified for the seniors much less been named to the Olympic team. If they had at least *tried* for realism and had her attempting the Junior Nationals rather than the Seniors, the movie would have been much improved in the believability area.

If you can shut your brain off while you watch this movie and just watch it for the main character's growth, that would be for the best.

(oh, and if you can find a copy of the 2006 nationals, Stephanie Rosenthal, who was one of the skate doubles, had two amazing performances)

Totally unrealistic
moonlight10015 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The acting was horrible and they got both of the sports wrongggg.......not only did they get the figure skating rules wrong, but also they rules of GIRLS Ice Hockey. In GIRLS ice hockey you cannot check. You also don't BLOCK for someone. Not all they girls are disgusting gross mean and big. I play hockey and I'm only 4'11 and have been asked to go to schools like the one in the movie. Also not all hockey players hate figure skaters. A lot of current girls hockey players were once figure skaters themselves. Also we skate A LOT faster then the ones in the movie. I was embarrassed by the movie it gave people the idea that we suck.......although i must mention that it is difficult to transition between the sports because of the toe pick on the figure skates.....also some of those twirly moves KAtelin was doing on the ice you couldn't do in a regular hockey game. She basically tripped the person, which is illigal. Its also unrealistic that she would get a HOCKEY scholarship when she figure skates. That really made me angry that scholarship would normally be used to someone who could benefit the team.

Thin ice thanks to a total lack of reality
bonange7 October 2006
Yes, it was a sweet theme, that girls can choose for themselves who they want to be. And, it's always great to see a movie about figure skating, a sport that can always use more attention from commercial sponsors. But let's be real. No figure skater would ever be so stoooopid as to believe that she could use hockey skates to do a double toe jump. Since when do hockey skates have toe picks? Duh, duh, duh. Why couldn't they have had a more realistic movie about girls and sports? Disney has such a massive reach. I wish the producers had combined their commercial interests with a greater shot of reality. That would have been an entertaining *and* realistic movie. Not so much to ask, is it?

okay movie
indianprincess989213 January 2009
The movie was good, especially because of Spencer, i mean he is so hot! but i thought that jordin hinson didn't act that well. She was really fake and her voice was all high-pitched and stuff. So basically, the whole movie, i felt like shutting her up, but other than that, everything else was really good. :) I also liked Hollywood, she was pretty enough to make the lead. Which comes back to my point, what was that Barbie blond doing in the main role anyway? Can she actually skate, because is she can't, then Disney cast the wrong girl. They actually lost money because the reception was not as good as they expected, so they couldn't immediately make it for DVD, i bet it's because of her...

Entertaining but with a lot of inaccuracies
laurraine11 June 2005
I watched this because Kristi Yamaguchi was in it. I follow figure skating fairly closely and enjoy skating myself when my health permits.

I found the story entertaining and fulfilling, but the movie is full of inaccuracies as far as the world of figure skating goes at least as far as I have seen things myself. Although Tanya Harding's actions brought the world's attention to figure skating, she is an anomaly. Figure skaters do not generally try to hinder their competition, at least not so blatantly. Rather there is quite bit of camaraderie among skaters.

The national competition is a several-day event. Each skater must skate at least two programmes. This is done on different days. I'm not familiar with the schedules for school hockey, so I don't know when their championship would take place. The national skating championship typically takes place in January. They take place at a large public arena, not a small rink like the one used in the movie.

I was also somewhat incredulous that when the skater showed up all covered in paint someone didn't ask "What happened to you?"

Enjoy the movie but don't base your ideas about the world of figure skating on it.

"You're a Twirl Girl"
bkoganbing28 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Disney Studios produced this nice family film about young Jordan Hinson who wants more than anything to be a champion figureskater. Russian skating instructor Cristina Rose offers to take her on, but she has to get into this prep school where she is and the only way is through a girl's hockey scholarship. And not field hockey, the real deal on ice.

The coach owes Rose and takes Hinson on without actually intending to play her and the other girls on the team resent her at first and they don't even know she's really a figureskater whom they disparage as a twirl girl. But figureskating has taught her a few moves and the fact is she combines her worlds.

We even get an appearance from real life Olympic medalist Krista Yamaguchi who is Hinson's idol. All in all a nice story about a young figureskater.

Do you hate parents? Do you also hate kids? Well here you go
thewatcher-4616630 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so the movie is about a teenage figure skater having to play hockey to get a scholarship so she can train with her figure skating idol. I'm fine with that. But, the main is so snotty that it actually makes it annoying. Her parents didn't have enough money to send her to the school and she became furious with them.

Also, the "romantic interest" isn't actually romantic whatsoever. It seems as if the creators forced some connection between two platonic people. And the guy seems way older than her so it makes it awkward and uncomfortable. And he is actually her hockey coach (assistant coach, but still weird and creepy).

The movie tries to make you sympathize with the main, but I didn't feel a connection once. Apparently, everybody hates her because she is better than all the other skaters, but I think that from a certain viewpoint that that makes sense. In less than five minutes in the movie she says that it is understandable that everyone is jealous because she is "the best". She is FAR from the best. Although, I don't figure skate so I can't say much, but to be honest, I have seen better.

In conclusion, if you are bored and need some b-rated mindless entertainment then this movie is for you. But if you want to watch a generally enjoyable movie then just watch something else.

Cute and simple...
RosanaBotafogo12 February 2023
Katelin Kingsford, an Olympic hopeful figure skater wants to train with a Russian figure skating coach. In order to go to the school that Natasha is at, Katelin gets a scholarship playing on the girls hockey team.

Watching a sequence of cute Disney movies, watching the second one about women's ice skating, another one of those about teen resilience with cute messages at the end, I have a soft spot for those water with sugar films from the early 2000s... It doesn't subtract anything, although they add in short, they are nice to pass the time... Extremely forced ending, and female rivalry still bothers me in these films... Cute and simple...

Bubblegum Stupidity
ponygal19949 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was probably the biggest waste of my life ever. The acting was pathetic. Jordan Hinson could not show any upset emotions. At the beginning of the movie, she was supposed to be discouraged. Instead, she bobbed her head with her bottom lip stuck out. She sobbed pitifully without any tears for the crying scene. I was almost angry that out of all girls who wanted to be actresses, they had to pluck out her. Everyone else was suffering from over-acting as well. It was flat out annoying. It was also an insult to figure skaters. Jordan took a month to train, and they cast her as a person who makes the Olympic team. It's practically spitting on the effort real figure skaters put into their work. A pitiful excuse for a movie, and a pitiful attempt to associate hockey and skating. Don't waste your life. It doesn't even deserve one star.

Great movie
misizzlem214 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was great. Its so funny. People may think it's like Ice Princess. Maybe it is. But I think this movie is better. Jordan Hinson and the cast had great roles that fit them perfectly. Lines like "They are girls. Just like me except bigger, meaner, with unconditioned hair" made me laugh so hard. The plot is great. One thing that Ice Princess doesn't have is a hockey team. Making Katelin choose between hockey and ice skating was genius. The only odd thing was the relationship between Katelin and Spencer. He is older than her but its still cute to see that kind of relationship form.

Overall, the movie is 10 out of 10.

Enjoyable For Under 10's
ChocolateCup10 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I can't say this is one of the best films I have ever seen. But then again, I can't say it's one of the worst I have ever seen.

OK, so it's basically a girl does skating, is good at it, wants to go to an expensive school, can't afford it and has to take a Hockey Scholarship. She has to hide her skating secret from her friends.

Personally, I didn't like the actress playing Katelin. She absolutely couldn't cry to save her life, just made wailing sounds, like a toddler pretending to cry to get it's own way.

Katelin was just an annoying person. The way she tried to act all nice and helpful to people. Also the part where the two skaters are calling her names and they say something about her choreographer and she says she 'draws the line' made me cringe.

We all knew where it was going to go with her and Spencer. Classically they didn't like each other and sort of get together at the end was just typical.

Overall, I think this is a movie to watch if you like skating but if you don't mind the main skater being extremely annoying. It's good to kill time basically.

Not the worst... but awfully cheesy
tokyo_chica25 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, when I came on the board for this movie, I was really expecting people to be making fun of it. I was surprised to see that people over the age of 7 liked it. I enjoyed the movie... but only b/c me and my little sister (who is, in fact only 10) made fun of the whole thing.

I am sorry Jordan, but that acting was awful. You know a movie is headed for the toilet when the lead cannot act. And it didn't even have a good script or plot to redeem it. I also thought that the character of Pamela was very very lame... border-lining pathetic.

Even with that being said, I thought there were a few good actors, such as gorgeous Spencer, Hollywood, and Ronnie. Still, not enough to redeem the movie.

Two things about this movie that I just can't get over:

1.) That that Spencer guy would fall for her. Okay, eww. I looked up the dates and while in reality, he is only about four years older than her, the difference in "Go Figure" seemed much larger. Jordan is a very pretty girl, but in GF, she seemed like 10 or 12... she seemed like a little kid! Jake Abel (Spencer) seemed like a college student.

2.) That there is any way that Kristi Yamaguchi would come just to skate for one girl. I mean, I know that Katelin is good and everything, but it still just seemed kinda unlikely that Kristi would go to a boarding school that didn't even have scholarships for skating, or that a school would have employed a skating coach with such connections.

That all being said... it wasn't the worst movie ever known, but it wasn't very good even by DCOM standards, which I consider quite low.

I give it an 'F'
handsprings61430 June 2005
this movie was a horrible excuse for...a movie. first of all, the casting could have been better; Katelyn the main character looked nothing like her TV mom.

also, the plot was pathedic. it was extremely cliché and predictable. the ending was very disappointing and cheesy. (but thats all i'll say about that).

the nail in the bag though, was a scene when Katelyn (jordan hinson) was supposed to be crying, but the girl couldn't cry on command! there were no tears streaming down her face, just a few unbelievable sobs. she is not a dynamic actress at all. she gave the same fake little laugh identical to that of hillary duff on lizzie Maguire (sp?). thats when the movie went from not-so-good, to just plain bad. it really looked like she was acting.

in a nutshell: this movie was really bad! it was kind of a mix of every cliché kid movie from the 1990's that everyone's sick of--only worse!

i give it an 'F', because it was just so darn hard to sit through (b/t/w, i was babysitting when i saw it).

however, you may like it if your 9 or under. ;)

INACCURATE
cristyskates22 March 2020
Though I found this movie very cute and had a good story line... it totally distorted what figure skating is all about. Many people think that figure skating is a independent sport which it is as you are not on a team but skaters tend to encourage each help each other and give others tips to succeed when they share ice time. There may be enemies between people but it's like that with every sport. The image they portray about the competition, coaches and friendships between figure skaters is simply inaccurate.

This is about a figure skater who becomes into a hockey player just to be able to figure skate with the best coach
prncesslexy1 April 2006
I am a figure skater and i love to watch figure skating movies. Out of all of the figure skating movies i found this move called GO FIGURE the best movie i have ever saw it was very very funny and the message getting across is if you really want something and your determined to pursuit it you would do what ever it takes just to fulfill your dreams like with Katelyn she is is figure skater and to be able to train with the best coach she has to become a hockey player and took the risk of switching ice roles. This movie is the movie that made me want to become a figure skater. Now because of this movie i have tried skating and it was my HIDDEN NATURAL GIFT in only 6 months i am an advanced skater in a figure skating club which is like a team past the lessons and the easy levels. And remember FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS do whatever it takes to make them come true

i fought it was so great
bexy_b12 February 2006
i fought that the film was brilliant! but as said it did av a few bits where it did seem v. obvious that she was acting. i think that Jordan Hinson did a v. good job but Jake Abel was so cute an that made the film even more brilliant! i love it an can't wait 4 it 2 b out on DVD!!! yea!!! Jake Abel is so hot!!! if i had to watch this film over and over again i would because this film is a very good film and i believe that anyone from the ages of 5 to 16 would find this film very good. i admit it can be a bit tedious but that is all forgotten if you watch the film with open eyes and an open mind. please don't say that this is a very bad film because truthfully you probably haven't seen the whole of the film. don't dis the film!!!

Thoughts about the movie! (Go Figure)
choirfreaklol12 June 2005
This movie was entertaining (as other users have stated)! Although some of the information, in the movie, was inaccurate, some of it was true.

The way the writers and characters explained the life of the figure skaters and of the hockey players was kind of confusing, considering all the back and forth of the backgrounds and time periods. Also as another user commented, why wouldn't a teacher or a normal person walking in the hallway ask why the girl was covered in purple paint. Most teachers are worried about the well being of the students. They have to be a little more realistic and explain a little more about what is going on. And, most figure skaters aren't so much about make up and "GLITTER". It's about fulfilling your dreams at what you are good at.

Although I don't know too much about judging movies, this movies had a good point and had a good "lesson" to learn. It was a little enlightening but it didn't have a very good focal point. It also didn't go too much into detail about the main character's life, so we/the viewer could know more about the persons background and what she has accomplished before she went to her new school.

Well as I have already stated, this movie was good, but it needed to be more realistic and self explanatory.

Totally delightful
skpn1235 March 2022
Forget the 'inaccuracies' and unrealism - of course they are present, this is a Disney film for crying out loud. This film portrays the courage, hard work and athleticism of both figure skating and ice hockey and with a beautiful guest appearance by Kristi Yamaguchi who is an icon. It is also a challenge to the sport to move past the Tonya Harding image which is still alive and kicking and support one another as a team.

But let's not take it too seriously this is a fun movie about skating with lovely family values and a great portrayal of the richness friends and family bring to our lives once we move past stereotypes and judgments. I really enjoyed it.
