2015’s onslaught of television is fully under way, giving us plenty to discuss this week on the podcast. First we look at a full week in comedy, including the debut of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, the disappointingly brief return of Venture Bros., and the finale of Galavant. Then it’s time to talk genre and drama, including previews of Pivot’s new murder mystery series Fortitude and The Americans s3 and looks at the Backstrom pilot and Justified premiere. And did we mention we caught up with The 100? In a week? ‘Cause we did. Finally, in lieu of the DVD Shelf, Kate speaks with Emmy, Writers Guild, and Annie Award winner, and current writer for The Simpsons, Michael Price about his career as a television writer on series like What About Joan?, The PJs, and that ‘90s classic, Homeboys in Outer Space.

Written by Carlton Cuse and Randall Wallace
Directed by Randall Wallace
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Stories of families caught in wartime conflict is one that has been explored in many forms of media, and the American Civil War is no different in that regard. Another entry into the group comes in the form of the Amazon pilot Point of Honor. Co-written by Carlton Cuse, the show focuses on the various members of the Rhodes family, owners of the Point of Honor plantation in Virginia, who free their slaves as the American Civil War breaks out, leading to divided loyalties and new challenges. The pilot succeeds in drawing distinct characters and putting the focus on the women and how the war affected them, creating a fascinating episode that holds a lot of promise for the potential series.

The Man in the High Castle, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Frank Spotnitz, based on the novel by Philip K. Dick
Directed by David Semel
Released January 15th, 2015 by Amazon
For fans of Philip K. Dick, The Man in the High Castle will have undoubtedly already been on their radar for quite some time. Dick’s fiction has been adapted into several acclaimed films, including Blade Runner, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. In this recent batch of Amazon pilots, Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files) adapts The Man in the High Castle with the vision of turning the source material into a full television series. Those unfamiliar with Dick’s written work need only know that his interest is in science-fiction and that the worlds he creates are generally immersive, vast, and intricately planned-out.

Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Streaming television shows have made a major mark on the television landscape over the past few years, whether it’s by winning awards, or simply being part of the cultural conversation. Amazon has been no slouch in this department, with their show Transparent garnering its own level of acclaim, both critically and commercially. Among the newest crop of pilots from the streaming service is Mad Dogs. Based on the UK show of the same name, the series is created by Cris Cole and executive produced by Shawn Ryan. The pilot, while indicating some major holes, also shows some promise for a potential show.

Cocked, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Samuel Baum and Sam Shaw
Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Familial strife over business concerns has been a story told often in television and movies, but rarely has the business in question been the gun business in America. Among Amazon’s batch of pilots is a show that aims to tackle that very ground, in the form of Cocked. Looking at a big gun company staring down financial troubles just as an estranged member of the family that runs it is forced to come back home, the episode unfortunately squanders the show’s potential, pairing a celebration of one character and all he represents with poor work fleshing out the rest of the show’s group and the world it’s set in.

The New Yorker Presents, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Directed by Jonathan Demme
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Of all the recent pilots released by Amazon, The New Yorker Presents is easily the most interesting. A half hour smorgasbord of content, this first episode is completely fascinating in terms of its form and what that could mean for both Amazon’s original series and television in general going forward.
The conceit of The New Yorker Presents is simple: a little bit of this, a little bit of that. This first episode contains a short film, a conversation/interview with an artist, a short documentary and a recorded performance of a poem. The ultimate success of a series like this is similar to that of a sketch comedy in that episodes and individual segments will be hit or miss week-to-week. Obviously, the goal becomes bringing together a collection of talent that is of...

Salem Rogers, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Lindsey Stoddart
Directed by Mark Waters
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Throughout the various incarnations of the Amazon pilot releases, the streaming service has sought to strike a balance between comedic and dramatic fare. The streaming service’s latest round of pilots was no exception in this regard, and one of their forays into comedy comes in the form of Salem Rogers. Marking the writing debut of actress Lindsey Stoddart, the show focuses on the exploits of a former supermodel trying to re-enter the world after a decade in rehab, with her hapless former assistant turned attempted self-help guru in tow. Unfortunately, the pilot suffers from a degree of indecision about what direction it wants a potential series to go in, which is reflected in the writing and pulls down the episode, despite the best efforts of the talented cast.

Amazon Studios has announced a January 15th premiere date for its first batch of 2015 pilots. As usual, the company will make series greenlight decisions based on viewer feedback.
Four dramas and two comedies are on offer, most notably the remake of British black comedy series "Mad Dogs" which Shawn Ryan ("The Shield," "Last Resort") is producing. Steve Zahn, Billy Zane, Romany Malco, Michael Imperioli and Ben Chaplin star in this version of the show about a group of underachieving forty-something friends who visit a friend's Belize villa - a holiday that turns into a nightmare of lies, deception and murder.
Another high-profile title is a pilot for a series based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternative history story "The Man in the High Castle". Set twenty years after the Nazis won World War II, the U.S. is now divided between Japan and Germany and tensions between the...

In its first three pilot seasons, Amazon has mainly focused on half-hour comedies, hour-long dramas, and dramedies that fall somewhere in between. Now, the online-retailer-turned-video-platform has announced its latest wave of original pilots, and they are quite a diverse bunch. Included among the seven pilots are two historical dramas, two dark comedies, two sitcoms, and a docu-series. By offering seven pilots, Amazon is increasing its output; previous pilot seasons contained five entries each. As per usual, some of the pilots come from recognizable names. One of those names is Ridley Scott, who is one of the executive producers of The Man In The High Castle, a series based off a Philip K. Dick work. The pilot explores an alternate history where the Axis Powers won World War II, and it could be Amazon's answer to 11/22/63, the alternate history book adaptation Hulu plans to distribute. Of course, given Scott's recent history with online video,...

The Hollywood Reporter first wrote about the Nikita star’s new role in the pilot, which will introduce viewers to the character Logan (played by Bad Teacher’s Josh Casaubon), a deadbeat guy simply getting by on his “charisma, charm and good looks” until he’s forced to run his ex-girlfriend’s yoga studio. Fonseca will star opposite Casaubon, playing a yoga teacher named Winter who’s “described as stunning if bedraggled, waif and unreliable and always late — and a love interest for Logan.” Down Dog was created by Robin Schiff of Are You There, Chelsea? and the pilot starring Casaubon and Fonseca will be directed by Brad Silberling, director...

Salem Rogers centers on a self-centered, arrogant former supermodel who is forced to leave rehab after 10 years and reunites with her long-suffering former assistant, now a self-help writer using her years with Salem as an inspiration.
