Ridley Scott‘s ongoing HBO Max series “Raised by Wolves” is constantly tapping into his horror roots and this week’s episode is no exception. In tomorrow night’s episode, “Mass”, director Alex Gabassi calls back to one of the scariest sequences in horror that comes straight out of Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper’s terrifying Poltergeist. “Prime: A Practical Breviary” opens with a bird call.
Heather Christian wrote this work of audio theater as a reinterpretation of the daily prayers that some in religious life take every morning. But that opening sound of nature is the first idea that this isn’t centered in any one particular faith. It’s not pinned to a particular place. Rather than abide to a location or a mindset or a belief system, the listener is invited to begin this musical meditation by imagining their own chosen venue.
“In lieu of a stage, you’re activating whatever atmosphere the listener is in,” Christian told IndieWire. “If you’re in the city, the birds in the yard become a relief or if you’re in the country, it’s like, ‘This is the day. Now I’m just gonna hyperbolize it just a little bit.'”

Hello again, dear readers. Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s nice that, if nothing else, we still have entertainment to help us through all of this. Most of us are preparing for another month of self-isolation and thankfully we have a ton of horror and sci-fi titles hitting various VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month of April. Also, I decided to feature some special streaming events here as well, beyond the regular digital releases we usually get, as I thought it might be helpful to have as many distractions as we could possibly get over the next few weeks or so.
Later today, the Salem Horror Fest is hosting a virtual premiere for Mass Hysteria over on Facebook Live and the very next day, Shudder’s new series, Cursed Films, kicks off with their first episode on The Exorcist. The next installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series,...

Jimmy Kimmel struggled to maintain his composure while addressing the shooting at his hometown Las Vegas that killed at least 59 people and injured 527.
“Here we are again – in the aftermath of another terrible, inexplicably shocking and painful tragedy. This time – in Las Vegas. Which happens to be my hometown,” Kimmel, who was visibly shaken, began his opening monologue.
“Of course, we pray for the victims – and for their families and friends and we wonder ‘why’ even though there’s probably no way to ever know ‘why’ a human being would do something like this to other human beings who were...

Lawrence Silk, the preeminent documentary editor who worked on Pumping Iron, Woody Allen's Wild Man Blues and three films that won Academy Awards, has died. He was 86.
Silk, who received the American Cinema Editors' Career Achievement Award in 2013, died Sunday at a hospital in Springfield, Mass., his son, Dan, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Wild Man Blues (1997) profiled clarinetist Allen and his seven-piece New Orleans jazz band as they toured Europe in 1996. Directed by two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple, the documentary also is notable for providing an intimate look into Allen's life with his soon-to-be wife, Soon-Yi Previn, and his...

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

When Sathwik Karnik of Plainville, Mass., was about 6, his mother began challenging him and his older brother, Karthik, to her own version of hide-and-seek - using an atlas. The boys would comb through the book, trying to be the first to find a city or landmark. The games paid off when Karthik, now 15, made the finals of the National Geographic Bee in 2011 and 2012. But it was Sathwik who finished the job, calmly answering questions about obscure island chains, bodies of water, global trade and culture. The result? Sathwik, at 12 years old, won the 25th annual geography bee Wednesday - thanks...

Amit Kumar’s ten year long journey culminates in a midnight screening at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Amit first pitched Monsoon Shootout to the UK Film Council in 2003 but waited for eight years to start shooting in 2011. In an exclusive interview to DearCinema.com, Amit Kumar talks about his film, working with international co-producers and his decade long struggle to make Monsoon Shootout happen.
How does it feel to have your film in the official selection at Cannes?
It’s a great honour. Waves of excitement interspersed with tonnes of work!
For the two years while I was hunting for finance, it was by and large the same story- okay we love your short film and your script but…let’s cast some star in it. I just wanted to work with good actors; I wanted to make a certain kind of film. So, it took much longer

The highly anticipated movie David O. Russell is making with Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K. and Robert De Niro has an official title: "American Hustle." The film was originally called "American Bullshit" before switching to the more socially acceptable nomenclature "Untitled David O. Russell Project."
"American Hustle" is based on the Abscam sting operation that took place on Long Island during the late 1970s and early 1980s. From the official press release announcing the film last year:
The Untitled David O. Russell Project is based on the true story of a notorious financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), who were forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians. At the epicenter of the entire tale, is the passionate and volatile leader of the New...

In his latest Music in Film column, Ivan has a listen to some of the finest soundtracks to appear this year so far...
What do John Carter and Maniac have in common? Unlikely male heroes, wooden supporting cast and spring release dates aside, they both have excellent scores.
In fact, February/March is fast becoming my favourite time of year for unexpected film music treats. 2012 gave us Michael Giacchino’s epic sci-fi score to John Carter, Mark Mothersbaugh’s fun 21 Jump St, the charming Hunky Dory, and Jónsi’s (of Sigur Ros) lovely We Bought A Zoo. Here are some scores that you might not have noticed this year, which are all worth a listen.

Jennifer Lawrence almost flaunted a bit more than she wanted to while on the set of the untitled upcoming David O. Russell flick in Boston, Mass., today.
Dressed in a plunging '70s-style white gown and fur coat, Lawrence nearly spilled out of her dress as she exited a van, barely escaping a double nip slip. Oops!
But the 22-year-old actress, who recently won an Oscar for her role in Russell's film "Silver Linings Playbook," hopped out of the vehicle unscathed, with her "girls" remaining in place despite a risky situation.
Lucky for Lawrence she didn't flash the crew ... unlucky she has to don that dated updo.

Providence, R.I. -- It was December 1979 when Emery Lucier learned the concert he was eagerly awaiting in Rhode Island by British rock band The Who had been canceled over safety concerns. The 17-year-old was so angry he knocked over a chair in his high school classroom.
"I just remember being so upset about the whole thing," he said.
Lucier, now 50, of Milford, Mass., held onto the ticket, for which he paid $25 ($12.50 for the ticket and $12.50 more for the scalper). On Tuesday, he and nine other people traded in tickets from that canceled show and got new ones for The Who's final appearance on its Quadrophenia tour in February at the Dunkin Donuts Center, the same venue it was supposed to play 33 years ago.
The venue's general manager, Lawrence Lepore, said earlier this month he would honor tickets for the 1979 show, which then-Mayor Buddy Cianci canceled after a stampede before...

Something nice happened to us while we were preparing the schedule for Ebertfest 2012, which plays April 25-29 at the Virginia Theater (above) in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. We'd invited Patton Oswalt to attend with his "Big Fan. He agreed and went one additional step: "I'd like to personally choose a film to show to the students, and discuss it." That sounded to me like a splendid idea, embodying the spirit of this festival, which combines the love of good films with volunteerism. This is a rare festival where no business takes place. No films are bought or sold. No deals are signed. It's simplicity itself: We join in a classic 1920 palace, 1,600 of us, and watch a film as it should be seen, on a vast screen with perfect sound. Then we talk about them afterwards. The festival and the theater come to us through the work of countless volunteers from the University and the community of Champaign-Urbana.

Halloween may have only just passed, but like a display in a department store, the holiday season hype has begun.
A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas attempts to deliver raunchy Yuletide hilarity in the vein of Bad Santa, but this second sequel falls well short of the mark. It’s higly unlikely anyone will remember this movie by Thanksgiving, let alone the end of December.
In the years since their previous adventure, Harold (John Cho) has distanced himself from best pal Kumar (Kal Penn). Because while Kumar still lives in the same apartment, in the same perpetually stoned state, his successful buddy Harold has moved into a fancy house with wife Maria (Paula Garcés).
When Maria’s intimidating father (an amusing Danny Trejo) arrives for a visit with the rest of the family, Harold takes on the task of decorating a specially-grown fir tree while the others attend Christmas Mass.

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has been enjoying his privilege of being an excellent director. He has directed only few films and has made it bigger in both Tamil and Telugu film industry. His directorial ‘Muni’ was acclaimed as a commendable family entertainer with himself playing the lead character. Off the late, Raghava Lawrence got involved with acting offers that drenched him in absolute errors. Now after his recent film ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ not doing well at box office, the actor is making his comeback as a director. After ‘Mass’, he will be making a Telugu movie yet to be titled and heroine of the film is none other than his very own favorite Anushka Shetty with Prabhas donning the lead character.

Choreographer-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence is not very much disappointed with his recent release ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’. The film produced by Ags Entertainment was churned out at the cost of Rs.12Crores and is still stumbling to collect half the amount of it at theatres.
Meanwhile, Raghava Lawrence, who had plans about making a supernatural thriller in Tamil with Anushka in female lead has opted for a change now. Yeah! Raghava Lawrence will be now directing a Telugu film yet to be titled and it features mass hero Prabhas in lead role.
Previously, Raghava Lawrence had acquired irresistible praises for his continuous blockbusters – ‘Mass’ and ‘Don’.
Prabhas is known for his stunning dance and with Lawrence joining hands with him, the film can be watched for their dances and unlimited commercial values as well.
