This Cheetah is Hard to Kill
superindrajit21 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Mithun Chakraborty is one actor who has done good films, bad films, and awful films in his career since the 1970s. He had good movies in the 70s, decent movies in the 80s, decent movies till a point(1996) in the 90s, and trash films till Guru(2007). Bollywood loves to copy Hollywood but I never knew that they copy Hollywood before 2000 as much as they did after the year 2000.

Cheetah is another typical action film starring Mithun Chakraborty with Ashwini Bhawe and another South Heroine. The film was typical in terms of plot and crazy(unintentionally hilarious) in terms of action. This is one movie which I though was original because of such a hackneyed plot and illogical scenes. However, I was quite surprised when I saw a Steven Seagal action film called Hard to Kill(1990), Cheetah borrows a lot from that film. In fact, the main concept is the same. The only difference is the Cheetah references to make Mithun as tough as Steven Seagal. The film works in parts because of dialogs and the police department scenes. Even Goga Kapoor's death scene is well handled but the problem is the romance, as usual the romance is boring. What's worse is the melodrama when Mithun has to marry the other heroine and leave Ashwini Bhave, the scenes where Bhave has to cry are annoying, and Raza Murad's sudden change of character before his death is hard to digest.

To make matters worse, Mithun's fake death and his family's real death drag the film and Mithun's coma scenes where Ashwini(a doctor) reunites with him are also a pain to watch. It's like the actual twists are well handled but the romance and forced comedy ruin the movie and the wait for the main plot to progress is irritating. The second half is better with more hilarious action and villains failing to kill our Cheetah who fights and fights and takes his revenge.

Direction by Harmesh Malhotra is mostly bad in the first half but somewhat good in the second half. He fails to handle the comedy and romance properly, none of the emotional scenes or the death scenes touch your heart. The second half is where the film picks up with more on the actual story and less on the subplots.

Mithun Chakraborty overacts terribly in the parts where he has to fight like a Cheetah, it looks unintentionally funny. He is good in serious scenes and some comedy scenes. Ashwini Bhave has little to offer as she appears in a few songs and mainly has to cry. The other heroine does a good job in looking like a typical housewife but her death scene is annoying. Raza Murad is annoying especially the part where he fights with Mithun. Goga Kapoor hams it up badly, Gulshan Grover is surprisingly good in one of his few positive roles. Puneet Issar is annoying, he overacts badly, he looks like a C Grade Villain as usual. The rest provide average support.

On the whole, Cheetah is a decent film in a few parts and it fails to be as hard-hitting as it's original Hard to Kill(1990) which was fantastic. The typical comedy and boring romance slows the film and ruins the movie. If there is something that stands out in this pile of junk produced by Rajiv Babbhar, it is some of the action sequences and the hospital escape sequence which was copied in a Sunil Shetty film Rakshak(1996) two years later.

Last Solo Hit of Mithun
jitender-225768 July 2021
It was last Solo Hit of Mithun as after this movie he concentrated on his hotel business and stayed in ooty only and only small producers casted him as condition was that he will do shooting only in and around ooty.

But star power of mithun was enough to make this movie superhit.

May be multiplex going audience today wont find it gud but was a solid hit in B & C centers and was ahead of SRK , Salman AKshay aamir collection in that year.

A 1994 Super-Hit!
namashi_131 March 2009
Rajiv Babbar's 'Cheetah' is a excellent entertainer from the year 1994. I love this film, I've seen it years ago but I still remember loving it to the hilt. The film was a Super-Hit when it released, and ya it deserved to be. Good script, well directed, fantastic sound-track and classy performances.

Songs: All the songs are amazing, especially Yeh Tera Sajna Sawarna.

Performances: Mithun is first-rate. He's a true star/actor of Indian Cinema. Ashwini looks cute and does a good job. Puneet Issar is effective. Prem Chopra is first-rate. Others are passable.

On the whole 'Cheetah' is a solid entertainer. Watch this one, to get dazzled. Two Thumbs Up!
