An outstanding East European film from a veteran Bulgarian film director Gyorgi Dyulgerov
FilmCriticLalitRao12 January 2009
Leydi Zi is a brilliant coming of age drama directed by one of the most creative Bulgarian film makers Gyorgi Dyulgerov. This film is different from his former works as most of his famous films of the past were made under the communist era.Leydi Zi can be termed as a mature cinematographic experience in the history of Bulgarian cinema especially in the context of post communist free market era of capitalist Bulgaria. The fact that it was made using ever growing digital video technique speaks a lot about its accessibility at various film festivals. This film succeeds as it is an altogether different Bulgarian film by being one of those rare East European films which probes the issue of what it is to be a Gypsy and be able to live with dignity in Bulgarian society.Leydi Zi is a multi layered auteur film which offers viewers glimpses of a hard to define love story, plight of orphans, boxing champions in Eastern Europe. All this is shown by making a good use of soothing music including many foot tapping songs from Bulgarian folklore.A truly great film to have been made in Eastern Europe.
