Shantaram is the Hindu name Indian villagers give Lin, the narrator: It means "man of God's peace." Lin - or Linbaba, as he is also known - was not always worthy of the name.
Was originally in development as a feature film at Warner Bros with Johnny Depp attached to star with Peter Weir as director. Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton were also considered before the project was retooled into a series.
The book has a first-person point of view so the actions of the characters are only known through what Lin sees of them. The series expands that.
Pre-production had to be delayed due to the writer's strike in 2007/08.
In the TV-series the character Lisa is actually two characters from the book mashed together. It's originally a character named Ulla who's being sold by Maurizio and Modena, not Lisa.
