Kitties, puppies and bunnies are playing their big games on Sunday, but football isn’t just for the furry and four-legged. Now there will be fins passing the pigskin, too.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb 5., the Los Angeles Clams will be taking on the Buffalo Gills for the title of National Fish Football Champion in Fish Bowl IV.
Penguin sportscasters — like Herring Andrews and Koi Aikman — will be on the sidelines of the Deep Sea Field (trying not to eat the players!) so they can offer play-by-play analysis of all the action, especially if the ref makes any fishy calls.

Screw space, no one can hear you scream underwater. Well actually, they’ll probably hear a bubbly gargling sound exiting your mouth as you attempt to scream before you drown as a result of swallowing mouthfuls of water, but you get… Continue Reading →

As one of the superheroes in the upcoming assembly of Justice League, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. Lower Depths: MacDonald’s Latest a Tense Deep Sea Treasure Hunt
While it’s being treated to a December release in his native UK, director Kevin MacDonald’s latest feature film, Black Sea, gets plopped into Us theaters in January, perhaps signaling a wise move so that it will stand out amidst the litter of debris that constitutes the vein of awards fodder holdovers and studio doldrums flooding the theaters during that season. Fresh from his enjoyable dip into Ya dystopia with How I Live Now, MacDonald returns to a tale bearing a bit more historical baggage, spiriting us away into a homosocial space of mounting tensions and rival cultural attitudes. A likeable lead performance from Jude Law plus a handful of nervy twists and turns helps its claustrophobic narrative chug along to a finale of limited possibilities.

Deep Sea News' Rebecca Helm calls this little guy "the most beautiful animal you've never seen," a description that mostly definitely suits the Sapphirina copepod that she likes to call a 'sea sapphire.' Glowing and stunningly beautiful one second, the unique sea-dweller is completely invisible the next, thanks to a complex system of crystal layers.
As we spotted over on io9, these so-called sea sapphires have closely spaced microscopic layers inside their cells, which allow for their highly unusual flickering capabilities. "When blue light bounces off these crystal layers," Helm says, "it is perfectly preserved and reflected. But for other colors of light, these small differences in distance interfere, causing the colors to cancel out. So while white light is composed of all colors, only blue light is reflected back. Combine this nifty trick with the sea sapphire’s impressively transparent body, and you have an animal as radiant...

In our previous news articles on the elusive deep-sea giant squid and its kin, much of the evidence comes from beached, dead specimens, which are pretty skeevy to look at, but otherwise more fascinating than frightening... but not when it comes to this video of an enormous (and very much alive) Magnapinna squid, spotted six years ago by the underwater cameras on an oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico, nearly a mile and a half beneath the surface. The footage, which was composited by an unknown Reddit user into the nightmarish portrait shown below and recently showcased on the oceanography site Deep Sea News, illustrates why Magnapinna is nicknamed the “bigfin”: its massive, winglike fins comprise nearly 90% of its body, and the tentacles are among the largest of any squid species, estimated at 30 feet or more in length. As if it weren't creepy enough, another unique trait...

Two Australian production companies have formed co-ventures with China which will see seven animated feature films produced over the next three years. In a related move, the major Chinese partner in the co-productions, Shanghai Hippo Animation Design, intends to launch a fund in Australia which will co-finance animated films. The projects were announced at the Screen Forever conference on Wednesday during a panel session entitled Working with China: Where Are We At? The Australian producers are the Zac Media Group and Alan Lindsay.s Vue Group. Xu Kerr, Shanghai Hippo Animation Design CEO, said the Chinese partners will fund 80% of the seven projects with the balance from Australia, presumably using the 40% producer offset. He told If the film fund will aim to raise $10 million initially, with an eventual target of $50 million, and it would invest in projects from development through production. Blue is the Color of My True Love’s Hair: Kechiche Takes Us Deep Sea, Baby
For his latest film, Abdellatif Kechiche returns to themes of love and maturation with Blue Is the Warmest Colour (La Vie d’Adele, Chapters 1&2), based on the graphic novel by Julie Maroh. As with other entries in the actor turned director’s filmography, his latest masterpiece sports a lofty running time, at nearly three hours covering a relatively small amount of time in one character’s life in the length of time that most epic sagas run out of steam. But if you give Kechiche your time, he hardly tries your patience, once again creating a beautiful, engrossing film that manages to capture human emotion like few others films ever have. Inordinately simple on paper, as, in essence this is a coming out drama, Kechiche understands how to pace, guiding us expertly as he...

Washington -- Vicious fights! Stunning beauties! Surprises around every corner! Yes, it's reality TV but with a lot more depth – as much as 10,000 feet. It's live coverage of deep-sea exploration off Nantucket and tens of thousands of people are tuning in.
They're watching an eel suddenly attack a squid, oohing-and-aahing over hot pink starfish and listening as excited researchers discover a canyon so downright alien that sea life lives on methane escaping from the sea floor instead of sunlight.
They're watching science as it happens, however weird and wild.
"We've been calling it Deep Sea TV," said National Marine Fisheries Services scientist Martha Nizinski, in a ship-to-shore interview. "It's much better than any other reality show being broadcast."

Even though James Cameron recently hinted he may may still be interested in adapting Yukito Kishiro's "Battle Angel" for the big screen a recent conversation he had with the New York Times would seem to suggest otherwise. The filmmaker detailed how he sees his future work panning out, which includes the two anticipated Avatar sequels as well as a potential fourth film along with what he expects will be several documentaries. Here's what he said: "I've divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I've made two movies in 16 years, and I've done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company's development arm. So I'm not interested in developing anything. "I'm in the Avatar business. Period. That's it. I'm making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4, and I'm not going to produce other people's movies for them. I'm not interested in taking scripts.

“I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4, and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts.” James Cameron said this at the Beijing International Film Festival in April and in Saturday’s New York Times. Even worse for fans of his 30-year film career, he meant it.
The writer-director-producer continued. “That all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the Avatar landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way.”
Cameron declaring himself wholly committed to Avatar isn’t particularly new. It was implicitly understood in early 2010 when Cameron,...

The man that made two back-to-back highest-grossing movies of all-time has gone on the record saying that he's only interested in returning back to the world of Pandora. Of course I'm talking about Avatar and Titanic filmmaker James Cameron, the guy who's currently busy diving to the bottom of the ocean, investing in asteroid mining and writing the screenplays for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.
Cameron was in China recently to talk business. He was selling his 3D technology and find investment partners for his many ventures, and along the way he sat down with The New York Times for an interview that covered a wide number of topics, of which was what other scripts his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, was developing. And that's when we learned the following:

Last month, James Cameron became the first human to reach Mariana Trench's Challenger Deep solo, an experience that he will soon turn into another 3D documentary. For a while there, it looked like undersea exploration would completely take over his entire career, until he eventually returned to fictional films with Avatar. Unfortunately, if you were still hoping to one day see him do something other than Avatar and/or more nature documentaries, that is now looking very unlikely. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Cameron has made it very clear that he will be focusing entirely on Avatar sequels from here on in, and nothing else. Here's what he had to say: "I've divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I've made two movies in 16 years, and I've done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm.

Today we have some good news and some bad news from director James Cameron. Cameron has been hard at work on the scripts for the Avatar sequels, and it looks as though everything is going well. We knew that the director was planning 2 and 3, but during an interview with the New York Times he mentioned the possibility of a part 4.
Here is what Cameron had to say when asked about his professional future:
I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions.
Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4,and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them.

James Cameron has found his true love, and it is blue.
In an interview with The New York Times, the "Titanic" and "Aliens" filmmaker admits that a combination of his own non-filmmaking activities and his commitments to the "Avatar" franchise mean that he has essentially scrapped all plans to either develop or produce any other films outside of his documentaries and several "Avatar" sequels.
Asked about scripts he's looking at or general areas of interest he might explore on film, he gave the following lengthy answer:

James Cameron Teases A Possible 'Avatar 4'; Says He's No Longer Developing New Feature Film Projects
James Cameron has sailed the "Titanic," gone into outer space with "Aliens" and traveled through time with "Terminator." But it looks like the director has committed a large portion of his upcoming cinematic career to the world of "Avatar," to the point where he says he's no longer going to even be considering new feature film projects.
The director recently chatted with The New York Times and revealed that while he'll continue his scientific research and documentary work, on the movie front, "Avatar" has become the central focus through which he'll be telling the stories he wants to share and using the technology he continues to develop. And that's not all. Back in the fall of 2010, it was announced that "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" would be his next films, but it looks like he's tossing around the idea of adding one more sequel on there which will certainly make...

Further to our first reports earlier this month about filmmaker and 'National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence' James Cameron ("Terminator") attempting to reach the world’s deepest point, the 'Mariana Trench', nearly 7 miles (11.2 km) beneath the ocean’s surface, you can now Sneak Peek the first footage from the dive.
Cameron’s dive into the canyon in a specially designed submersible marks the launch of "Deepsea Challenge", a joint scientific project by Cameron, the National Geographic Society and Rolex to conduct deep-ocean research and exploration "...to expand our knowledge and understanding of these largely unknown parts of the planet..."
Cameron’s Cameron/Pace Group, a supplier of 3D technologies and production support services, provided the capability to document the historic expedition in high-resolution 3D.

Hey, does your cell phone reception suck? Clearly you are not James Cameron, who Tweeted from the Mariana Trench's Challenger Deep yesterday, the deepest and creepiest part of the ocean.
"Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you @DeepChallenge," he wrote.
No, it wasn't part of a promo for the release of "Titanic 3D," just another day for the writer/director/producer whose interest in both technology and the deep blue sea has resulted in some seriously groundbreaking discoveries.
Actually, it was part of his Deep Sea Challenge that he's been prepping for for years.
According to National Geographic, Cameron is the first human to take the 6.8 mile plunge all by himself, which took two hours and 36 minutes. (Cameron is the third person to reach the Challenger Deep; Us Navy Captain Don Walsh and the late...

What happens when a bunch of designers from around the world get to show off some of their new, innovative, or just out there ideas at Gdc 2012 on the same stage where Flow and Katamari Damacy made their debuts?
Hit the jump to find out.
First up, Pietro Riva and Nicolo Todeschi of Team Focaccia showed off the prototype for their abstract shooter, Mirror Moon, where you use your "gun" to affect the alignment of nearby heavenly bodies and solve the spare, alien environment's puzzles. You can find a brief trailer for the game here.
Next up, Steve Zwink introduced his prototype, Scale, another Fps set in a colorful, Mario 64-style world. Zwink explained that your gun can scale everything in the world to solve puzzles. In one example, he jumped on the back of a butterfly, expanded its size, riding it to another location. In another instance, there was...

Have distributors given in? Rob Marshall-directed fourth in the franchise had blanket UK screenings, even at arthouse cinemas
The winner
Four years after Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End left British cinemagoers a little less than satisfied and a good deal confused, the question remained: just how big an appetite would there be for a fourth helping of Captain Jack Sparrow? The answer: a healthy one. On Stranger Tides debuted with an impressive £11.63m, including £3.07m in Wednesday and Thursday previews. That's the biggest opening of 2011 by a considerable margin, beating Paul (£5.52m), Thor (£5.45m) and Fast & Furious 5 (£5.33m).
Thanks to multiple screen occupancy at many sites, the new Pirates flick dominates the market to an incredible degree, with the weekend's number two title, Fast & Furious 5, grossing just 5% of Tides' tally. The Rob Marshall-directed sequel's dominance can be seen most evidently in the top 100 engagements chart, which...

Few shows manage to scream Saturday Morning Cartoon like Jabberjaw, and you have to love Warner Brothers for making this one available through the Hanna-Barbera Classic Collection.
The 4-Disc set contains the complete series (which is surprisingly only 16 episodes) of the zany "Scooby-Doo-esque" adventures of a cowardly shark and his band, The Neptunes. It's a wacky brand of fun that is immediately recognizable as signature Hanna-Barbera, and it's the perfect mix of music, bizarre ideas of the world of the future, and outlandish villains.
There's simply nothing that compares to this particular brand of kid-friendly fun, and there never will be. Besides, how many times do you get to say, "Deep Sea Crime?"
Playing to every set of fun and comedy its target audience is looking for, Jabberjaw stands out as a legend of its time, and is a must-own release.
The release has no bonuses, though you could hardly expect it to,...

When I saw Under the Sea on IMAX 3D last year, I couldn't help but feel like it was more attraction than education, like a special show tucked in a coveted wing of an aquarium, or even a museum, where IMAX nature movies often play in. The fact that it was a 3-D experience projected on a giant screen certainly contributed to that sense of spectacle.
So it was with both curiosity and reserve that I revisited this 40-minute documentary on Blu-ray, knowing full well that the two aspects that impressed the most, namely the size of the screen and that pop of extra dimension would be absent.
As expected, some of the charm is lost with those absence. The meat of the documentary is really more in its presentation than its content. After all, why else would you lug that monstrous IMAX camera deep underwater in remote exotic seas...

Dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago after ruling the earth for 160 million years and remain a source of endless fascination.
Our ideas about these ancient creatures were given a radical and more realistic overhaul in the Jurassic Park movies and then in the documentary Walking with Dinosaurs and its Beasts, Cavemen and Monsters sequels.
If you're a fan of those, you'll definitely be interested in the History programme Dinosaur Secrets. The Complete Season One is now out in a 3 DVD Digipak.
Based on the fossil record and analysis by expert palaeontologists, each episode employs groundbreaking forensic science and state-of-the-art computer graphics to recreate battles between particular prehistoric species.
From an opportunistic Nanotyrannus taking on a nest of T-Rex youngsters to a mighty Megalodon (a 50ft shark) ambushing a whale off the coast of Japan, Dinosaur Secrets provides an engaging account of how, why and where dinosaurs fought.

Chicago – It’s easy to see why filmmakers like James Cameron are constantly inspired by the life forms that exist underwater. They are as fascinating and mysterious as any otherworldly being dreamed up a science-fiction author. BBC’s brilliant series, “The Blue Planet,” unearthed deep-sea specimens that continue to haunt my nightmares. It proved that monsters do sometimes hide in the dark, and exist only to feed (one fish had teeth so large that it couldn’t even close its mouth).
Of course, such images are guaranteed to terrify a G-rated audience, and “IMAX Under the Sea” offers a more cuddly, yet no less spectacular, look at creatures of the deep. It is filmmaker Howard Hall’s follow-up to his previous family-friendly documentary, “Deep Sea 3D,” and was released theatrically as “Under the Sea 3D.” Though no home entertainment system can come close to equaling the experience provided by IMAX 3D,...

To fully explore the undersea world of exotic locales like New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, you could put on scuba gear and hop into the water. Or for the next closest thing, there’s “IMAX Under the Sea”, which besides keeping you dry, also comes with voiceover work by funnyman Jim Carrey, here dispensing with the yuk-yuks as our narrator and guide. Written and directed by IMAX veteran Howard Hall, the IMAX 3D shot “Under the Sea” is now available (as of 3/10) from IMAX and Warner Home Videos on DVD and Blu-ray. Imagine a world of incredible color and beauty. Of crabs wearing jellyfish for hats. Of fish disguised as frogs, stones and shag carpets. Of a kaleidoscope of underwater life. Now, go explore it! The makers of Deep Sea and Into the Deep take you into tropical waters alive with adventure: the Great Barrier Reef and other South Pacific realms.
