Rewind to 12 months ago and you couldn’t find an awards pundit, consultant or publicist who didn’t think “Birth of A Nation” was going to win Best Picture and possibly even Best Director. As we now know, that clearly didn’t happen. That’s the sort of hindsight you need when considering where we currently stand halfway through the 12 month-a-year race to Oscar glory. Susan Sarandon and Debra Messing have not buried the hatchet. In fact, Sarandon may have just fueled the fire.

Though she’s been offered the chance to play Bette Davis her entire career, Susan Sarandon wasn’t keen on bringing a caricature of the iconic actress to the screen, especially in a movie that didn’t dig deep into her story. “It’s not enough to think Bette Davis is cool,” Sarandon tells Et. “What do you do with her then? It’s really a challenge to make an audience experience something in that moment -- and not just a camp impersonation of somebody, because that’s going to get tired really quickly.”

This year's Oscar race was the most wide-open and unpredictable in years -- until Thursday morning's announcement of the Academy's nominations. Now, most of the top categories have clear favorites.
Of course, the nominations list also tells us a lot more than just who's up for a trophy on Feb. 28. It also reveals much about the decision-making process of the Academy, the conventional wisdom in Hollywood, and even the trends that help determine what you'll be watching at the multiplex over the next year. Let's break down just what the nominations can teach us:
1. "The Revenant" Is Now the Official Front-runner
Remember when "Spotlight" was thought to have the inside edge? No more.
The frontier-survival drama earned an astounding 12 nominations, more than any other film this year. (In fact, it was a surprise that it didn't earn a 13th nod, for Best Adapted Screenplay.) Since the movie with the most nominations often wins Best Picture,...

Up for grabs at the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival is the film Zombeavers, a horror/comedy in which a group of college kids staying at a riverside cabin are menaced by a swarm of deadly zombie beavers. Because... of course. The film was directed by Jordan Rubin who co-wrote the screenplay with Al and John Kaplan and stars Rex Linn (Cliffhanger), Cortney Palm, Rachel Melvin, Hutch Dano, Jake Weary and a bunch of other people I've never heard of. The likelihood of this making its way into wide release seems slim, but an IFC Midnight or Magnet pick-up doesn't seem entirely out of the question, especially if the following red band trailer goes viral. Give it a look for yourself and yes, it's not safe for work. yt id ="7onFrBK_hKE" width="610"...

The WWE Royal Rumble kicks off the road to Wrestlemania and this year’s is a little more significant compared to years prior. Up for grabs this year for the person to outlast 29 other men is a title shot at, not only Wrestlemania, but the landmark 30th Wrestlemania. The winner will more than likely challenge for the WWE title at Wrestlemania, which takes place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. A lot more emphasis for this one, so let’s check out who will most likely come out of the 27th Royal Rumble as the victor.
Dolph Ziggler
Dolph started 2013 very well with a strong Rumble appearance and a world title win after cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase against Del Rio. However, it seems to be a trend with WWE in the past few years to have first time world champs flat line immediately after their big win; it also happened to Edge,...

The ninth full-on Humble Indie Bundle just went on sale (there have been numerous offerings since the last one, and many of them have included indie games, but it's been a little while since the last curated collection that put Humble Bundle on the map).
And anyone familiar should know the deal by now: it's a chance to nab some of the finest PC games for a price that you get to choose. Up for grabs this time is "Trine 2: Complete Story," "Mark of the Ninja," "Brutal Legend," and the "Eets Munchies" Beta.
Though paying more than the average will net bonuses, which in this case are "Ftl: Faster Than Light" and "Fez."
Another great thing about these collections is how it's often everyone's first chance to enjoy said PC classics on the Mac and Linux. With the Humble Indie Bundle 9 being no exception; both Fez...

Bradley Cooper has signed up for a still-developing Lance Armstrong movie, according to a new report on Deadline.com. According to the industry news site, Cooper is joining "Red Blooded American" as a producer and will play a major role in the film, though it's unclear which of the two parts roles he'll take.
Up for grabs are the characters of Armstrong himself and Tyler Hamilton, Armstrong's longtime buddy and ex-teammate. Sports fans will remember Hamilton as the man who appeared on "60 Minutes" to deliver a damning account of Armstrong's use of banned substances, and the focal point of Armstrong's ensuing vitriol.
This is hardly the only Armstrong movie that's starting to take form. In addition to Jay Roach and Warner Bros.' version, which is the one Cooper was just attached to, there's a J.J. Abrams film in the works at Paramount, and Working Title has a Stephen Frears...

Smash may have had a very public journey into the Land of the Cancelled, but it hasn’t taken one of the show’s brightest stars long to find a new gig.
EW has confirmed a report that Megan Hilty, who played Broadway star Ivy Lynn on the NBC drama, has scored a series regular role on Sean Hayes’ upcoming multi-cam comedy Sean Saves the World, which premieres this fall. (Hayes previously had a guest spot on Smash.) Hilty will play Liz, Hayes’ character’s best friend and co-worker. She will replace Lindsay Sloane, who played the part in the...

And you thought it was bad when Fox aired the last four episodes of Arrested Development as one barely-advertised, two-hour chunk opposite the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics!

Jennifer Aniston appears on today’s episode of Ellen, but not just as a guest — she’s co-hosting the show. Naturally, this gig carries more pressure than a simple guest appearance… which is why Aniston thought it’d be a good idea to stop by her old Friend Matthew Perry’s house and ask him for advice, since he recently co-hosted alongside DeGeneres himself. (Jen: “You’ve got to give me something to go on!” Matthew: “Don’t say Go On.”)
Unfortunately, the rap session doesn’t go completely as planned. It turns out Aniston and Perry haven’t really...

Frankenweenie was a strange film for us, and while neither of us liked it quite as much as the general consensus of film critics seem to, Shane liked it a fair amount more than I did.
It turned into a pretty interesting show though, even if it seemed like we were talking more about Tim Burton than the film itself. That probably led us astray for much of the conversation, if you’re looking for in-depth analysis of the film, but I think all you can say about Frankenweenie, you can actually say pretty quickly.
I admired the film’s efforts, and there’s no denying that when Burton is on, he’s really on, but it was all a little too easy and simplistic for me. There were great points, and it was fun watching the history of horror films roll out in such a wild concoction, but it...
