No one wants to pit two powerful women against each other, but that's kind of what will inevitably happen soon between these two A-listers. Leading ladies Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence will be thrown into an involuntary comparison battle in the near future, as the two stars are each slated to portray the late Zelda Fitzgerald in dueling biopics. The Jazz Age icon and wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald died nearly 70 years ago in a fire at a North Carolina hospital, but her life has been at the forefront of Hollywood's inspiration as of late. Just as Amazon rolls out its own series, Z: The Beginning of Everything, with Christina Ricci playing the "first American flapper," films...

In The Great Gatsby, her fourth film wit husband-director Baz Lurhmann, she mainlines fresh blood into F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary autopsy of the empty emotional lives of Long Island's wealthy elite during the gin-soaked Prohibition era. Thanks to Martin, who again did double set and costume design duty, the film's parties in Gatsby's East Egg mansion are ocular orgies set to the music of Jay Z, Beyonce and

Boardwalk Empire delivers yet another great episode, showcasing the character's performative aspects...

‘The Jazz Age’, they called it. The term came to mean rather more than music, but, like so much of culture, songs were at the heart of things. It was the era of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong; the decade of George and Ira Gershwin, Scott Joplin, ragtime, the Charleston and of course, the blues. It was the age of Bessie Smith and Chalky’s beloved Ma Rainey, whose Farewell Daddy Blues will yet resonate through our fictional world.
In that world it’s also the age of Daughter Maitland, whose exquisite, sensual performances have become standard features of this current run of episodes. Part of Boardwalk Empire’s success as a period piece has been achieved through an evocation of...

Director Baz Luhrmann has been known for making visually pleasing and heavily stylized films, which simply means that he was born to eventually direct the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic The Great Gatsby. And boy does he direct it; filling the film with lush photography and a general grand presentation that turns the timeless classic into an epic on-screen event that absolutely must be viewed in 3D. Unfortunately, The Great Gatsby also suffers from a director going overboard with his visual flare, while not focusing enough time on the film’s numerous detestable characters, played with a varying range by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire.
The film follows a young and aspiring writer by the name of Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he ventures off into the big city with hopes and dreams of making it. Things don’t really pan out for Nick at first and he puts...

Plot: A bondsman (Maguire) becomes witness to a love triangle involving his cousin (Mulligan), her husband (Edgerton), and the wealthy rich man of mystery (DiCaprio) who lives in a mansion next door. Based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Who’S It For? Fans hoping this movie will honor the spirit of the novel should probably not bother; this film adaptation has its own spirit, one highly directed towards viewers who simply want opulence.
Movie:
The actual story of Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” isn’t all that great. That is a fact of literature; what elevates the novel to its prestige is its vision, its imagination with words.

This week: Leonardo DiCaprio is perfectly cast as the titular character in "The Great Gatsby," director Baz Luhrmann's gaudy adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel.
Also new this week is Michael Bay's darkly funny "Pain & Gain" starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, the family drama "At Any Price" with Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron and the cult monster movie "Q: The Winged Serpent" on Blu-ray.

Chicago – God, I want to love “The Great Gatsby,” on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Bros. tomorrow, August 27, 2013. I adore “Moulin Rouge!” and think Baz Luhrmann’s approach to the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic was a daring one. And, watching the film again at home, in a great 2D/HD transfer instead of a garish 3D one, I found more to respect here. The film’s flaws were amplified in 3D and they’re allowed to blend into what works on Blu-ray. The special features also amplify the work by illustrating the incredible amount of detail and work that went into the production. I still can’t get over some of the mistakes made, like nearly every decision made by Tobey Maguire, but the Blu-ray gets me closer.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
From my theatrical review:
“I wanted to love “The Great Gatsby.” I’m a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s passionate, romantic view of cinema.

When I read The Great Gatsby in AP English back in 1975, I knew it was considered a literary classic but didn’t fall in love with it, despite East Egg’s source material, Great Neck, was nearby. It was a world of the wealthy and decadent that didn’t make sense to me. More recently, though, I reread it for the first time in preparation for my teaching career. With some experience, age, and wisdom, I came to see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s prose in a new light. I certainly got to appreciate that this was a fresh take class, wealth, and The American Dream.
So, when I heard director Baz Luhrmann was going to bring his visual sensibilities to bringing the novel to the silver screen, I thought this could be a wonderful treat, matching the imaginativeness of his Romeo & Juliet and verve from Moulin Rouge. The casting — from...

[From MTV News] New York: The Jazz Age took center stage Wednesday (May 1), as the stars of Baz Luhrmann's glitzy "The Great Gatsby" — including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan — walked the black carpet outside of Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall for the world premiere of their '20s-set film (which opens in theaters May 10).
Often considered one of (if not the) great American novel, the F. Scott Fitzgerald tale — about an enigmatic millionaire trying to win back his long-lost love — is a mainstay of high-school and college curricula, yet the manner in which the stars were introduced to the book are as many and varied as Gatsby's extensive shirt collection.
DiCaprio, like many, read the novel as a boy but found new meaning in it as a man.

“Hello Sport!”… ah one of my favorite books ever written, The Great Gatsby was a classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that explored life in the roaring 20s in New York City during “The Jazz Age.”
Back in December of 2008, we heard a story that Baz Luhrmann wanted to re-adapt The Great Gatsby for the big screen. Production Weekly is now updating the project for the first time, mentioning on Twitter some rumors of the amazing cast he might be putting together. Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio is up for Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire for Nick Carraway and Amanda Seyfried for Daisy Buchanan.
MTV, updated Baz Luhrmann’s status and confirmed that he’s still up for The Great Gatsby, but he’ll have to choose between that and another project he’s been working on. Both are set in New york City, but one is a musical.

Luke Macfarlane, Matthew Rhys
It’s a warm January day on the ABC studio lot in Burbank, California as I wait for Matthew Rhys and Luke Macfarlane, who play Kevin Walker and Scotty Wandell on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, to arrive for a joint interview – an interview that’s been quite some time in the making. So after having first toured the set where Rhys and Rachel Griffiths will later film a scene in an art gallery (a scene that will have major implications for Griffiths' character Sarah Walker), hanging out a few more minutes is no big deal.
Ten minutes pass before Calista Flockhart, Emily VanCamp and Griffiths arrive at the stage via shuttle, while Rhys and Macfarlane turn up a few minutes later … on bicycles. It turns out that this is how they usually get around the lot, which isn’t surprising given how down to earth both...

Luke Macfarlane has a lot of words vying for brain space these days. In addition to his regular stint on ABC's Brothers & Sisters, he's portraying F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Jazz Age, a new play that takes us inside the mind of the famed author, at Los Angeles' Blank Theatre. "Scott's basically on the stage the entire time, so I have all these lines in my head," Macfarlane says. On Brothers & Sisters, "we were shooting a scene the other day, and I'm supposed to walk into an apartment and say, 'You're home!' And of course, the line 'You're late!' came out of my mouth, which is one of my first lines in the play." Still, Macfarlane is thrilled to have the chance to do TV and theatre simultaneously. "In a play, you're constantly trying new things out," he says. "What I really love about the theatre is that...

Chatting With … Sri Rao
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sri Rao, the former head writer of last year’s best soap opera on either daytime or nighttime television, General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to discussing his work on that gay-inclusive, critically acclaimed show, Rao also shared his thoughts on the depiction of gay characters in the genre, who should write gay characters, how As the World Turns handled the Luke and Noah storyline, as well as news about a new project very close to his heart.
[While very interesting and worthwhile, this interview is five pages long. To skip directly to this week's In My Humble Opinion, Gool Newsbeat and Scoops And Spoilers click here.]

Sri Rao: No, this was my first foray into the soap opera genre. I had been watching General Hospital for my entire life. I’m a long-time fan of the show so I was very familiar with it.

In The Spotlight – River City
When we last took a peek at BBC Scotland drama River City, gay graphic designer Scott Wallace had lost the child he cared about — not to mention the guy he cared about. Since that storyline wrapped up, Scott has pretty much disappeared; however, a few weeks ago, the show introduced an intriguing new gay character in the very nice form of construction worker Nathan Simpson, played by James Daffern.
When Nathan set up shop in River City, he immediately found himself attracted to bartender Rory Murdoch, played by out actor David Paisley. While Rory was flattered by Nathan’s attentions, Rory is straight … or so he says.

Nothing says "Good morning, sunshine!" like the mental image of one of primetime's cutest gays dressed up in spats and gloves, stinking of gin and causing all sorts of mischief at home and abroad.
So imagine my delight when I read this news on Playbill that Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters) will be heading the cast of the La production of The Jazz Age, playing great American author F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The play apparently looks at the tumultuous personal lives of Fitzgerald, his troubled wife, Zelda, and equally volatile author Ernest Hemingway, "punctuated by the pulsating beat of a live musical trio." Well pardon me for saying so, but if I were in the audience sharing oxygen with a dolled-up Macfarlane the musical trio wouldn't be the only one producing a pulsating beat!
Wait ... I don't think that came out right...
