Pop culture has long mimicked pageantry. It’s reflected in Taylor Swift’s sequined leotard, Beyoncé’s unmistakable strut, and even Margot Robbie’s twinkling grin in Barbie. The melangé of glam and controversy in pageantry encouraged The New York Times’ Lauren Herstik to co-produce the documentary How to Fix a Pageant.
“You have things like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé and Barbie this year each earning a billion dollars, or just about to get there,” Herstik tells Rolling Stone. “There’s a lot of connections between that kind of culture...

The pageantry circuit needs more than a new publicist. Sure, longstanding organizations like Miss USA and Miss Universe have always faced criticism, sparking debates over the ethics and social ramifications of judging women on their bodies. Lately though, it seems like the stage has been rife with scandal that goes a lot further than Steve Harvey accidentally announcing the wrong winner or Rachel Leviss aging out of the competition and having an existential crisis on Vanderpump Rules.
Enter How to Fix a Pageant, the latest chapter of The New York Times Presents, from director Nicole Rittenmeyer (102 Minutes That Changed America). The hourlong doc goes deep into the scandals that rocked Miss USA throughout 2022, including rigging, favoritism, multiple conflicts of interest, and sexual assault under the leadership of then-president and former Miss USA Crystle Stewart.

Jumping into the mix is former Miss USA Shandi Finnessey who tweeted about this earlier, saying; Reading script for Piranahconda. Seriously, this is some good sh*t. Even better than Sharktopus. Beware Sharktopus! Whilst a monster that is ‘half shark, half octopus, all killer’, as the advertising blurb (quite accurately) describes it, might not be top of the list of obvious aquatic menaces, the wacky premise certainly promises a great deal of fun. This is even more so given the presence of B-movie legend Roger Corman, and a half decent helmer in the form of Declan O’Brien, whose “Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead” made a respectable attempt at bucking the law of decreasing returns. As is usually the case with this type of film, the cast includes a sprinkling of semi-famous faces, namely the always fun Eric Roberts (who recently returned to the big screen with “The Expendables”), Sara Malakul Lane (“Belly Of The Beast”) and Us TV host and former Miss USA Shandi Finnessey. With its ridiculous creature having whipped up a fair amount of interest, the film...
