Mehrjui's love letter to Cinema
corrosion-228 October 2006
Dariush Mehrjui is probably the only Iranian director who has found the perfect balance in making movies which are both critical and commercial successes. He has made box office hits like The Tennants and Hamoon, which also scored big at various film festivals.

Mum's Guest follows in the same tradition. It's a crowd pleaser which has also scored well with critics. The story is very simple. "Mum" ( veteran Iranian actress Golab Abdineh) has invited her newly wed niece for dinner and is worried that, being very poor, she and her husband can not prepare a meal to suit the occasion.

Help, however, arrives from a number of unexpected places. "Mum" and her husband are tenants in a large house which is also home to a number of other tenants including a medical student (whom everyone calls Doctor and who performs a hilarious "surgery" on a goldfish attacked by a cat), a reclusive old woman, a pregnant woman & her addict husband, etc. They all, however, join hands to help "mum" overcome her problem.

Mum's Guest is both a social comedy and a love letter to cinema. Mum's husband is a cinema projectionist who, together with his colleagues in a memorable scene, recite music and dialog from classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Duel in the Sun, and some classic Iranian movies.

The acting is universally great with Abdineeh a stand out. Highly recommended.

An Iranian little society with its all humors
smvaez11 October 2005
Dariush Mehrjui is one of the greatest Iranian movie makers, with his special style of filming. In this movie, he has shown an Iranian little society with its all humors. You could find in this movie, one social stratum of Iranian people, all have their own problems, and how they live together. How they united around a mother, to overcome her problem. It has been made a nice picture of Iranian union. Specially the style of writing of Houshang Moradi Kermani, has made a very good impression. The leading roles have been characterized very good, in spite of number of characters.

As a film in the genre of comedy, Mehrjui's work like what he did in Ejareh-Nesheenha, is fascinating. Also in some part, he has made deeper senses. This is a family movie, you could see with your family and enjoy.

Good...

Mehrjui is the greatest director of Iran...he made many great movies like : The Cow - The Cycle(Dayereye Mina) - The Postman - Hamoun and... And he introduced Iranian cinema to the world with " The Cow ". Mom s guest(Mehmane Maman)is the last movie of Mehrjui and its very good comedy and it shows life of poor people of Iran perfectly. plays are very good especially Golab Adineh(as Mom) and Parsa Piruz-Far(as Yousef) directing of Mehrjui is very good like the past Mom s guest is not as good as the Cow and the cycle but its good for entertainment. The story based on the novel by Houshang Moradi Kermani (in the name of Mom s Guest). The movie shows us how iranian people help each other in bad situations and Mehrjui was successful to show this.

An emotional masterpiece
artaekman4 January 2022
Well to be honest, the production quality and acting is not the best cinematic history has seen. But Mothers Guest has an ace up it's sleave, the phenomenaly modest but emotional story. The story unfolds in a way that makes you feel like you are a part of this family and really connect with the struggles and emotions of the family. For me, it brings semtimental memories from my childhood living in iran, and makes me think about all my relatives. Thinking back to the times me and my family visited Iran, about the fantastic times we had with the relatives but as a child i didn't reflect over the fact that most of them were living paycheck to paychek and went from heaven to earth to make us feel welcome. This movie made me reflect over my childhood, took me on an emotional rollercoaster and delivered a very real and touching story of an ordinary family. Must watch!!!!
