Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access).
One area in which women have dominated Oscar nominations is writing. Going all the way back to the second ceremony, Josephine Lovett earned a bid for “Our Dancing Daughters,” while Bess Meredyth received two noms for “A Woman of Affairs” and “Wonder of Women.” The next year, Frances Marion became the first woman...

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Something could happen at the 95th Academy Awards that has never happened before: a remake of a Best Picture champion could win Best Picture. The movie in question is “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which initially won the coveted Oscar prize for 1930 and is now a hot contender to be named the best film of 2022. The Netflix remake, directed by Edward Berger, earned nine total bids this year: picture, adapted screenplay, international film, score, sound, production design, cinematography, makeup & hairstyling and visual effects. If it wins Best Picture on Sunday, March 12, 2023, it will become the 17th war movie to prevail.

Do you like your sitcoms lighthearted with a hint of mystery? Do you think Jake Peralta is an amazing "detective slash genius"? Do you often restrain yourself from blurting out "title of your sex tape" when someone says something that sounds unintentionally inappropriate? Then you're probably a fan of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," the cop comedy starring Andy Samberg.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" debuted on Fox in 2013, one year after Samberg's exit from "Saturday Night Live." His "Nine-Nine" character, Jake Peralta, is a detective with the NYPD. As with many Samberg roles, Peralta is an endearing goofball, an adult who faces the challenge of growing up without letting go of the boisterous joy that some mistake for immaturity.
After five seasons, Fox unceremoniously canceled "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in 2018. However, NBC picked it up a day later, ultimately airing the show for three more seasons. There are 153 episodes, and every fan has their favorite. From the...

Back in 1994, Jane Campion became only the second woman to reap Oscar bids for writing and directing with “The Piano”; Lina Wertmüller had broken this glass ceiling in 1977 with her dual nominations for “Seven Beauties.” Campion won Best Original Screenplay and became the 12th female champ across the two writing categories but lost Best Director to Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List”). Campion’s current contender, “The Power of the Dog,” could bag her that elusive directing Oscar (Spielberg is also in contention for his remake of “West Side Story”) plus awards for her adapted screenplay and producing.
Should she prevail for penning a script based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel, she’d become the first woman to conquer both writing categories. To date, the only female writers to have won twice at all are Frances Marion and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.

Yvette Nicole Brown is in it to win it, whether she's referee-ing or putting aside her lactose intolerance to crush a bowl of cereal. The Celebrity Game Face guest star exclusively revealed to E! "I don't know if people know this, but Kevin and I started our careers together," Brown explained ahead of tomorrow night's premiere. This year Sofia Coppola could make Oscar history with her newest film “On The Rocks.” Unfortunately, the significance of these potential accomplishments is a reminder of the academy’s legacy of female underrepresentation. She directed and wrote the film, in which Rashida Jones stars opposite Bill Murray in a father-daughter caper. It’s a delicate and delightful film that touches on relationships, insecurity and the voices of women.
Coppola last directed Murray 17 years ago in the 2003 film “Lost in Translation.” It was famously shot in less than a month with a slim $4 million budget. It received critical acclaim and comfortably broke $100 million at the global box office. That movie not only earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, but Coppola became the third woman in history to score a Best Director nomination. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

“Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” “Promising Young Woman” and “Nomadland” have made strong impacts in the early awards season, including for their screenplays by Eliza Hittman, Emerald Fennell and Chloe Zhao, respectively. If any of them go all the way to the Oscar podium, it’ll only be the third time that a woman wins a writing prize for a movie she wrote and directed herself.
Only seven women have ever won Best Adapted Screenplay in the history of the Oscars; of those, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala is the only one to win twice, for “A Room with a View” (1986) and “Howards End” (1992). Women have had slightly better luck in the Best Original Screenplay contest, where 11 female scribes have won, with Frances Marion prevailing twice for “The Big House” (193) and “The Champ” (1931).

Ever since Universal-DreamWorks’ “1917” debuted, reporters have seemed fascinated with the fact that women played key creative roles in the film. The list included Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who co-wrote it with director Sam Mendes, and producers Pippa Harris and Jayne-Ann Tenggren.
The surprise is surprising.
Neal Street Prods., which Harris, Mendes and Caro Newling formed in 2003, has always maintained a 50-50 gender balance. “It’s in our company’s DNA. Plus, Sam didn’t want production of ‘1917’ to be a macho environment,” says Harris.
Further confounding stereotypes, the film’s strong emotions were not a “feminine touch” but came from both writers, Wilson-Cairns and Mendes, while she was the expert on all things dealing with World War I.
This shouldn’t be a shock because Hollywood history is filled with women who helped create some of the greatest “male-driven” films ever. In 1921, June Mathis scripted “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,...

Sheffield Doc/Fest 2019 country focus strand, New/Japan, supported by Daiwa Foundation and Sasakawa Foundation showcases a new wave of stories and images from Japanese filmmakers, from the intimate and familial lens to the abstract and subversive. In artist-filmmaker Makino Takashi’s practice the abstract is drawn out of the real through the layering of images, flickers of light and the perpetual movement of dots and grains, as shown in Memento Stella (UK premiere), whichcombines up to 200 layers at any one time, redefining screen space and feels deeper the closer audiences focus their eyes. Shot by Kazuhiro Soda, Markus Nornes and Terri Sarris against the backdrop of the 2016 election and the rise of Donald Trump, The Big House (UK premiere) presents a microcosm of America at this Michigan stadium, by showing everything but the game. In Norie (UK premiere) artist-filmmaker Yuki Kawamura embarks on a road-trip with his father to...

CBS has put in development America, U.S.A., a single-camera theme park workplace comedy from husband and wife duo of TV writer-producer Michael Kramer and actress Lilli Birdsell (Turn), writer-director-producer Alex Reid (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and CBS TV Studios.
Written by Kramer and Birdsell, America, U.S.A. is a young workplace ensemble set at a Colonial-times theme park called America, U.S.A.
Reid executive produces and is set to direct and showrun. Kramer and Birdsell co-executive produce with Adam Peck.
Based loosely on real-life theme park Colonial Williamsburg, Birdsell got the idea for America, U.S.A. when she was doing research for her recurring role as Martha Washington on AMC series Turn. Birdsell brought the idea to husband Kramer, and the duo then went to Reid.

The Academy Awards have every reason to boast about their diversity and inclusion of women this year. Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Emily V. Gordon (“The Big Sick”) and Vanessa Taylor (“The Shape of Water”) are among the nominees for Best Original Screenplay. However, women have been drastically underrepresented among winners, and no woman has won either writing category in 10 years.
To date only 16 women have ever won an Oscar for writing, starting with Frances Marion, who won Best Original Story for “The Big House” (1930) and “The Champ” (1931). Then Muriel Box became the first woman to win Best Original Screenplay when she prevailed with her co-writer and husband Sydney Box for “The Seventh Veil” (1945).
But you have to fast-forward another 46 years before any woman won this category solo: Callie Khouri for her classic screenplay for “Thelma & Louise” (1991). Two years later, Jane Campion would also take home Original Screenplay for “The Piano...

It certainly seems to be the year of the woman at the Academy Awards. Greta Gerwig became just the fifth woman to receive a Best Director Oscar nomination for “Lady Bird.” For the first time in the academy’s 90-year history, a woman, AFI Conservancy alum Rachel Morrison, has been nominated for Best Cinematography for “Mudbound.” And the drama’s director Dee Rees made history as the first black woman to receive a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film’s star Mary J. Blige not only received a supporting actress nomination, but she is also nominated for Best Original Song for “Mighty River” from the film, alongside co-writers Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson.
But it’s been baby steps for women behind the camera in terms of Oscar nominations, let alone wins.
Here is a look at some of the trailblazers:

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. You’re not the only one who doesn’t remember the ABC sit-com "The Big House," with Kevin Hart. No one does. I’ve never even heard of it myself. But there are some good reasons for that. First of all, it was on the air literally a decade ago, in 2004; and second, it only lasted 6 episodes. The show, which premised on April 2 of that year, and was cancelled after April 30, was a reverse of the premise for "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," with Hart playing a rich spoiled kid (named Kevin Hart – How’s that for originality?) whose world is turned upside down when his father is arrested and imprisoned for embezzlement. As...
