Zorrible!
Zantara Xenophobe3 June 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This review has some SPOILERS in it.

I happened to spot a movie called 'Zolar' in the TV Guide last week and decided it sounded like something to check out. I knew absolutely nothing about it, but as my friend says, even bad sci-fi is better than no sci-fi. My friend, I am afraid, is so very wrong about that. He needs to watch this movie and rethink his philosophy.

So what is 'Zolar?' It was actually billed as the first live action movie for the Kids WB, a fact I was not aware of until after I started watching it. Had I known this, I might have steered clear, but having seen the beginning credits and noticing C. Thomas Howell's name, I thought it had to have something worthwhile in it. Again, wrongheaded thinking here. The story, as it is, centers on a group of ragtag teenagers that are trying to get into the business of extreme games, particularly skateboarding. You've got the leader, the wild girl, the super-smart inventor, and the little sister. Thing is, they all stink at the sport. Famous(?) skateboarder Jason Ellis, perhaps hallucinating on narcotics, sees potential in these flops, and he recommends them to be trained by Skip, a guy that lives in a bus out in the middle of nowhere. They agree, and make the trip to see him. Skip will train them for the competition (slated the following month, so they are going to be pros in that much time---so much for realism!), but only if they will allow his son to join them. Out pops Zolar, who, as anyone with an IQ in the positive digits can tell, is a teenage alien. Our teenagers, however, credit Zolar's blue skin, frog-like hands, and weird ears as him being a kid from another country. Albert Einstein they ain't!

Of course, Skip trains them for the games, but at the games, oddball aliens show up to kidnap Zolar, resulting in the most laughable chase scene I have ever seen: a chase on a skateboard ramp! After our heroes avoid this trap, we learn that Zolar is from another planet (check that, the TEENS learn this). An evil alien named Hedion (C. Thomas Howell, in ridiculous make-up) wants to extract the energy from Zolar for destructive purposes, and is sending henchmen to do it. We learn that there are a lot of aliens posing as humans, and that most of the best extreme sports players are really aliens in disguise. A real revelation for Tony Hawk, I am sure! Zolar is different in that he has some kind of force that, when off his home planet (destroyed by Hedion) he displays various powers, like flying and bad light shows. Upon learning that his parents may have died with his home planet, Zolar gets depressed. If this is sounding familiar, it should: it is a carbon-copy of the Superman story. Anyhow, some aliens nab Zolar and thus begins a boring struggle as the teens fight to save the world.

I, meanwhile, had to fight to stay awake.

How does the movie end? It doesn't. What we get is something of a cliffhanger, where another kidnapping attempt is planned by Hedion and then the credits roll. While seeing the credits was merciful, the idea that someone intends to make a follow-up was not. The writing is bad. Things would happen that made little sense, and characters suddenly went to a location and it is hard to understand what they are doing there. The characters are all dull, especially Zolar. The effects are computer-generated, presumably on a high-tech Etch-a-Sketch. The make-up effects are such that even the makers of the Power Rangers series would be ashamed to feature them on their show. Howell, for instance, has a big, red head and a long pointy nose. At first I thought his nose was supposed to resemble a mosquito's, but then I realized it was supposed to be a finger! Imagine that: a finger instead of a nose! Somebody morph me out of here! Howell deserves so much better than this.

One can only hope that nobody else watched this movie (and now that I have watched it for you, you don't have to see it) and that 'the first live action movie for the Kids WB' is also 'the last live action movie for the Kids WB.' But knowing television executives, they won't let a dead horse die, and more Zolar movies will liter the screen, under the thought that kids are dumb enough to watch anything with aliens and bad effects. And that is the worst type of wrongheaded thinking possible. Zantara's score: 1 out of 10.

Originality isn't always a good thing
TOMNEL8 March 2009
An alien...who skateboards?! Whoo, how highly original. This movie does ooze with originality, despite that every part of the movie is absolutely dreadful. The plot is ridiculous, the acting is horrible, the writing is embarrassingly bad, and the special effects were not so special. This movie is just dreadful in every way, so you masochists out there might want to give this a try.

A group of kids is putting together a sports team, and for help they go to Hedion (C Thomas Howell), a sports trainer. Hedion has a skater kid of his own that wants to join the team, but he's no normal kid. He's a blue alien, so none of them like him, but they bond after about 3 seconds of corny dialogue and everything is good once again. Some bad guy aliens are after Zolar, and it's up to his amazing skills to "Pwn" them to death.

This movie isn't charming, and it tries it's hardest to be. It wants to have a heart, but it's material is so ridiculously brainless, that a heart is lost somewhere in the stupidity. The plot progresses very quickly, and yet it seems too long. It's because of the poor writing for the characters. One character has a crush on Zolar, which is strange, and kind of disgusting. And to make an boring corny kids movie worse, they add some awful effects that are eye poppingly bad.

The Kid's WB is no longer around, and there might be a reason behind that fact. This Kid's WB produced movie is just awful. Only watch it if you have a love for bad cinema.

My rating: BOMB out of ****. 95 mins. Not rated

Worst Movie Ever
keats20002 May 2005
About extreme sports only pretty much every one in the movie is bad at skating, blading, etc. and everyone is a bad actor and when you mix bad acting with a horrible script and even worse graphics it makes you wonder why the spent the money to make this in the first place. The story is like a bad Superman story mixed with bad extreme sports. The tricks they pull off in this movie are no more spectacular than the tricks you can see at your local skate park when you go there and watch the people who are just learning to skate. So in their main focus of this movie the mix the mark completely and if you want a story about skateboarding watch the Lords of Dogtown.

simply... I don't know.

This movie is amazing; don't let anyone tell you different. The awful computer effects, very off plot, and wacky (cliché kid's show) characters make this movie one to laugh at. Definitely a hit for people who want a good laugh. For those who would like a well-done, well thought out plot, this is the worst movie in the entire world to see. It will unlikely even excite or even keep the attention of a 6/7 year old. The main hit of this movie is for those who want a really weird, very dumb movie to watch. It is hilarious to laugh AT, not to laugh with. The characters are the normal kind: the leader who is daring and able to do most things, the computer genius who thinks up all the plans, a girl who is just wacky for fun, and the leader's younger sis who needs to prove to them that she is not a kid. The only exception is the main character, a blue alien who likes to put his "blue" on.

A modern classic for the skater in all of us
ajvark9 October 2018
From the moment they snowboard down those slopes at the beginning to the very end, Zolar is packed with awesome action and top of the line special effects. Its characters resonate with energy not found in any other production, and dialogue such as "you're a super blue dude" will just send a shiver down your spine. I cannot recommend this movie enough. Gather with some friends in a rabb.it or cytube and enjoy the rollercoaster youre about to experience while you get your blue on! BLUE-YAH!

How Embarrassing C. Thomas Howell
renata_gatti10 January 2005
The movie is really bad I have to say!!! But I'm almost sure kids will like it. The special effects are awful. the make up... I have no words to say how bad it is.

I've never seen any of those actors before and I have an idea why! They are horrible. Bad, bad, bad acting!! And the extreme sports guys... man!!! they look so uncomfortable with the idea of being in front of the cameras that they just spit their lines and shake their heads a little

I can't believe C. Thomas Howell made a movie this bad last year. It's very embarrassing!!! =D If you enjoy watching terrible movies to just have a good laugh at them you may like this one, because it's so ridiculous all you can do is laugh or change the channel!

BTW... Jason Ellis IS a famous skater. he's from Australlia.

Misunderstood Classic

Warning: Spoilers
It's heartbreaking seeing the reviews of this film that just don't get it. While you could view this film through the lens of it being just another sports movie, you'd be missing the point entirely. Zolar isn't just an extreme sports movie, it's an extreme sports movie with aliens and cool stunts and fight scenes. You aren't going to get that from Tony Hawk, he isn't blue. Zolar is one of the coolest dudes I've ever seen. Also there's a pretty good feet scene near the end of the film so look forward to that.
