Sleazy variation on the old snuff theme

Veteran sleazeball Bruno Mattei is at it again with this erotic thriller that clearly echoes Joel Schumacher's 8MM. But, as expected, Mattei does his movie on a minuscule budget - so that it already looks obscure when it's newly released.

After her daughter gets abducted, a mother enters the dark world of underground pornography, because the kidnappers belong to an international organization that direct snuff films as long as the exclusive clients pay well. The search for her daughter does not only lead the mother across Europe, but also into prostitution. She goes to bed with some guys to get her clues. When she finally reaches contact with the snuff organization lead by the mysterious Doctor Hades, she's getting into great danger herself.

There is not much good to say about this one, even though it starts promising. Problem is that the movie is by far not as sleazy or explicit as one might expect from the director who made films like BLADE VIOLENT. SNUFF TRAP (which was first released in Russia!) is neither gory enough nor does it contain the amount of nudity and sex to really keep the viewer's attention. The plot isn't that special either, except maybe for the surprisingly many different locations throughout Europe. The ending is hugely disappointing. The acting isn't really remarkable either, except for Anita Auer who plays Doctor Hades: She looks and acts extremely creepy. You don't want to meet her like this in a dark alley (or Your bedroom, for that matter).

All in all, SNUFF TRAP only appeals to collectors of Bruno Mattei's films. But it's good to see the man back on the helm again: It was his first thriller since 1994's giallo GLI OCCHI DENTRO.

A movie only people who are too scared to buy a real porno movie would like

A cheap exploitation film about a mothers search for her daughter who has been kidnapped by people who make snuff porno films. The trail leads the mother all over Europe as she searches for her child and we in the audience struggle to stay asleep.

This is one of the countless soft-core sleaze films that are made for people who want the excitement of porno with out the stigma or danger of it showing up on their credit card bill.Personally I'd rather have the stigma since those films tend to be more interesting and honest about what we're seeing. This is suppose to be a sexy thriller but its not. Mostly its people talking about things followed by lots of walking from place to place and lead to lead.Periodically through out the film various people get undressed and everything has more than a touch of S&M to the proceedings. The violence and fetish material is of the sort to provoke laughter rather than horror or even excitement, its all so incredibly fake. Worse there is not even enough nudity to keep it interesting. (Basically par for the course for many of these films)

You'll forgive my lack of details but it simply is a dull boring film that I stayed with to the end hoping for something remotely prurient to occur, but there was nothing. The most interesting thing was the blonde haired villainess with the huge over bite and nose the size of a Buick. I watched her with morbid fascination wondering what she had looked like as a young girl and wondering whether she had had plastic surgery, not the type of things you should be thinking about in a gripping thriller.

Avoid.

Unfortunately the only spoiler in this review is that there's nothing to spoil about that movie.Even if B. Mattei had never done any master piece he use to do his job with a bit of humor and craziness that made him a fun Eurotrash director. But for the last 10 years he seemed to have lost it.This film is just empty, nothing at all to wake us up from the deep sleep you sink into after the first 10 min.No sex, no blood(it's suppose to be about snuff?),no actors, no dialogs, just as bad as an 90'T.V film.It's even worse than his last cannibals and zombies epics.So Rest in peace Bruno, you will stay in our minds forever anyway, thanks to such unforgettable gems as:Zombi 3, Robowar,Rats, l'altro inferno,Virus, Cruel jaws and few others.So except if you want to see B Mattei possessed by jess Franco's spirit's new film, pass on this one.But if you don't know this nice artisan's career track down his old films and have fun.

Snuff Killer otherwise known as Snuff Trap is an Italian thriller that is all too familiar yet doesn't give credit where credit is due.

What I mean by that is this is a blatant remake of the excellent 8mm (1999) but doesn't acknowledge itself as such. The plot is the same just with a minor character tweak, many scenes are near identical and it randomly flicks to 8mm's script to the very letter.

I'm not keen on movies being remade at all truth be told but when a filmmaker doesn't even have the decency to tip his hat to the source material that's seven shades of disrespect.

But putting that aside what is the film like? Well it's not actually that bad. It tells the story of a woman who learns that her missing daughter may have been kidnapped to be put into the seedy world of extreme cinema and snuff. To save her daughter she must dive into the bowels of the industry and put herself at risk.

The tweeked plot of 8mm does give the film its own identity, right up until the point it suddenly decides to reinact a scene line for line.

As for the content it manages to be both tamer and more hardcore at the same time. 8mm was grittier, darker and more brutal while Snuff Killer/Snuff Trap opts for considerably more nudity yet little actual unpleasantness by comparison.

I sadly couldn't get over the 8mm remake factor, but I could still recognise that this piece of Italian cinema is perfectly watchable and not the needless T&A or torture porn movie many might assume.

After reading a very favourable review in a very popular Horror review magazine (which i won't name), i had very high hopes for this film. My hopes faded very quickly when i saw that BRUNO MATTEI was credited under the pseudonym of PIERRE LE BLANC for the on screen titles. This is never a good sign. The film is shot on video and is a very cheap effort all round. The acting, if you can call it that, is lousy and laughable throughout. The main problem is the distinct lack of gore or sleaze. Come on guys where was the red stuff we crave in flicks like this? If this is the best Italian film makers can come up with then the Italian film industry is better off dead. This really is a waste of time and i feel i have just lost 90 minutes of my life watching it. Don't be fooled by the title into thinking this will be a sleaze fest - it is nothing more than an amateur bore fest. I am off now to watch a Fulci flick to remind myself just how good Italian films once were.

remake or copycat?

This film is terrible. Every line is stolen from 8MM (the Italian dubbed version, at least). If you like trash... real trash, give it a try; but beware: this ain't the "so bad it's good" kind of flick. In its cheapness, it may really look like a porno but, believe me, if you're looking for "snuff", s & m, hardcore, softcore... or even an ordinary erotic thriller, go find something else in store! I'm telling you this, 'cause the absolutely uninspired and unconvincing shooting, acting, plot, dialogues (the only good lines, as I said before, are the ones they stolen from Joel Schumacher's 8MM!) will bore you to tears in a few minutes and the "happy ending" is absolutely revolting! I'll give it one star: a half for the sudden shot in the back scene, after "the eyes of the victim" monologue (stolen from 8MM as well) and a half for mom & daughter's sexy bodies (that didn't manage to keep me completely awake while watching this turkey, anyway!)

8MM, Bruno Mattei style!!

There's no denying there's something remarkably entertaining about watching Bruno Mattei's SNUFF TRAP, and entertaining in all the wrong reasons. Mattei essentially reworks Joel Schumacher's 8MM, though with only a few differences, mainly being its a female character who ventures into the sleazy world of the porn underground looking for her kidnapped daughter who or may not have fallen victim to a snuff film. Though with a decidedly different change in certain scenes and a shorter running time, a lot of the film consists of scenes almost similar and in one case exactly the same as 8MM. Even dialogue from 8MM is used in certain speeches, exact dialogue. Mattei's version is a lot more sleazier and explicit, and comes off as one part lurid thriller, soft porn flick and European travel monologue (I lost count the amount of scene where our heroine is just walking around European city's). It also has a happier and anti climatic ending, which I'm certain features footage lifted from another film. If you want to watch a film that provides cheesy, 'so bad its good entertainment' then Mattei is your man, and this along with his other 'masterpieces' such as RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR, THE OTHER HELL and ZOMBI 3, would make great late night beer and pizza entertainment.

only made to shock people

I just came across this kinky flick due the director Bruno Mattei who I knew from a few flicks made in the heydays of the horror genre like his zombie flick Hell Of The Living Dead (1980) amongst others.

What did it offer me, not a lot except that it is shot in a typical Italian way and only made to offend people who aren't used to see shocking flicks. I mean, just watch it, and be offended I guess because this the story is rather simple, daughter being abducted by people who like to make snuff. The mother goes out to find her daughter all over Europe into the dark and sinister world of porn, but not the usual stuff but the world of bondage and fetish.

So no gore this time but a lot of faked shootings of porn. But it do has a lot of nudity of course and some fetish that as said earlier can offend people. High heels crushing testicles and burning candles used to drip on girls you can guess what's it all about.

Weak story however, the acting is mediocre it's all about the snuff...

this is quite a ride

Are we really making 'video nasties' again? In the guise of a digital wide screen big budget remake of 8MM, this is quite a ride. Unfortunately there is a bit too much story and at times this becomes like a travelogue as our heroine searches the sleaze spots of Paris, Hamburg and Amsterdam. I am however being rather churlish for the 'depraved' scenes, including everything from, hot wax, harsh whipping and rough sex to drowning, beheading and some. These scenes are immaculate and it's a pity Bruno and his budget couldn't stretch to make all the many characterful creatures introduced become more than simply caricatures.

Before his death in 2007, Italian director Mattei, known in some placed as the Ed Wood of Italy, made a semi-comeback with a string of low-budget movies ranging in various subjects from cannibals to zombies and of course women-in-prison. This film here comes off as a semi-remake of HARDCORE but those expecting a lot of sleaze might be disappointed. In the film, a mother (Carla Solaro) goes into the darkest corners of Italy and France trying to track down her daughter who was kidnapped and might have been sold for a snuff film. The mother must try and buy her way to the underground where killing women on film is high dollar. Mattei is known for ripping off various films and creating some of the worst bad movies ever made including the infamous HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD. His recent stuff must have been made on budgets lower than $10,000 and you can see it but at the same time I must admit that this is perhaps the best movie I've seen from him. Not in terms of gore or entertainment but in the technical sense of film-making. The movie manages to be mildly entertaining even if it does go on for way too long and Mattei actually manages to build some suspense towards the end when we start to learn what has happened to the daughter. There are a few plot twists late in the film that are easy to spot but for the most part this film works. Those expecting a lot of sleaze are going to be disappointed because Mattei actually takes it pretty easy considering the plot. There's quite a bit of nudity but the violence is pretty tame and there's no gore to see. Solaro is a lot better than you'd expect and the supporting cast are decent, if nothing great. Not only does the plot lift from HARDCORE but you've also got a sex scene in the back of a limo that rips off the one in NO WAY OUT. If you're a fan of Mattei then you'll certainly want to check this one out but just be prepared for what you're in for.

While making out in a car with a guy she picked up in a nightclub, blonde babe Lauren (Federica Garuti), stepdaughter of a French politician, is abducted by a European porn ring; when Lauren's stepfather refuses to call the police, fearing that the scandal might damage his career, his sexy wife Michelle (Carla Solaro) decides to take matters into her own hands, entering the dangerous world of extreme S&M and snuff movies to try and save her daughter.

I know that he was far from a great director, but I find it hard not to admire legendary Euro-hack Bruno Mattei for his sheer dedication to shamelessly sleazy cinema: long after most Italian rip-off merchants had packed away their Panaflex for good, Mattei kept the flame alive, continuing to churn out cheap, derivative, shot-on-video trash until his death in 2007.

Snuff Trap (2003) is his blatant imitation of director Joel Schumacher's 8MM. For the most part, Mattei is content to stick closely to his source material, even going so far as to copy entire scenes and snippets of dialogue verbatim; he does, however, add one or two touches of his own that help him to plumb the depths of depravity further than anything envisioned by 8MM's scriptwriter Andrew Kevin Walker.

By making his protagonist female (and very sexy), Mattei is able to introduce a new level of deviancy to proceedings, Michelle having to participate in sex acts to further her investigation (something that never happened to Cage's character, thank God!): she administers a blowjob to an underground filth-merchant, takes a beating to prove her interest in S&M, and humps a rich playboy (who looks like TV antiques dealer David Dickinson and whose pervy driver resembles Rolf Harris)—although that's just for the hell of it.

Given its risqué subject matter, Snuff Trap naturally features plenty of sexual brutality, but the majority of the violence is far too clumsily handled to be considered genuinely disturbing; that said, Mattei does manage to sneak in one or two surprisingly strong blink-and-you'll-miss-'em peripheral images (as Michelle peruses a selection of porno mags and when she enters the ante-chamber of sadistic movie-maker Dr. Hades) which succeed in making the film feel authentically grubby at times.

In a finale that looks set to be suitably downbeat, Michelle and Lauren are tied to crosses to be slaughtered in front of the camera, but Mattei successfully reminds his viewers of what a craptastic director he really is by having the police burst in through the windows, rescuing the women in the nick of time—precisely the kind of stupidity that Mattei fans find so enjoyable and strangely endearing.

6.5 out of 10, rounded up to 7 for Anita Auer's unforgettable turn as creepy Dr. Hades.

Bruno makes 8MM

Snuff Trap feels like Bruno Mattei finally got sick of making all those interchangeable softcore romance movies and said, "You know, I'm at my best when I have no filter." Welcome back, Bruno. Or Pierre Le Blanc, as you'd like to be known as here.

After her daughter Lauren gets abducted, Michelle (Carlo Solaro, Paprika, Top Girl) must enter the nightmare world of an Italian scum cinema version of a Paul Schrader film. Yet beyond just simple pornography, there's the danger of snuff films, which seems to make sense when you're movie is called Snuff Trap. Or Snuff Killer. Or Snuff Killer - Death Live.

Actually, this movie is 8mm, except that no one's mother thought that the best way to rescue her daughter from a porn ring is to become a prostitute herself. That's because Michelle's husband is a politician and he'd rather not have the scandal of a stepdaughter going dietro la porta verde.

Soon, our protagonist finds herself going up against the leader of the pornographer, who has the astounding name of Dr. Hades (Anita Auer) and her henchman Roy.

Oh man, from 2002 to 2007, Mattei was the last Italian filmmaker standing making good old fashion exploitation films. I'm a huge fan of his late career shot on video films, which sure, are total junk, but nearly everything Bruno did was very much the same way. Yet I have such a soft spot in my heart for him, out there in his late 70s making cannibal movies in the jungle and cutting and pasting plots and even big pieces of footage from Hollywood movies. One of those films has the entire budget equal to the total of every movie Bruno ever did and absolutely none of the fun and heart. In a perfect world, we would have figured out how to put the human brain into an eternal robot and I would have paid as much as I had into the Kickstarter to keep Bruno alive, making ripoffs of whatever he could make the most money from at the time.

I mean, who else would make a movie where the password to the snuff empire's secret inner lair is bondage?

Bruno Mattei forever!
