Similar to Degrassi but does manage to stand on its own

Watched this show last year but thought I would leave my thoughts now. I will start by saying this show is very similar to Degrassi The Next Generation which aired at the same time. Ultimately it's nowhere near as good but one major aspect it did (which Degrassi never did) was focusing on issues faced by Aboriginal youth. I was floored with some of the storylines they featured. Particularily racial profiling. The police removing the shoes of the native teens and than driving them to the middle of nowhere so they couldn't walk back was something I never knew happened.

I do need to give a shoutout to Ishan Davè who IMO gave the best performance on the show as a very shy awkward teen who over time transitions to a very confident yet very rebellious young man.

Another person worthy of note is Lorne Cardinal. Most of us all know him for his comedic role on Corner Gas but it's great to see him as a very serious yet loving father who deals with repressed trauma of his childhood spent in a residential school.

I will say that despite it being the title of the show, I wasn't the biggest fan of the online magazine aspect. I found it almost a little too convienent a way to wrap up issues at the end of each episode. Though some of the issues explored did extend over multiple episodes.

Overall a pretty solid show. Though a bit obscure, it's worth a watch if you love Canadian teen dramas.

Warning: Spoilers
This show comes across as one of those shows that goes "Hmm what issue can we tackle next?", picks a character and tackles the issue. This is not always a bad way of writing a show if it is done well. Its not.

Potential spoilers I guess. ************************

For example, in one episode a girl wants breast implants. Body image issues? Check. A girl lies about her heritage and is ashamed of her Native background. Its just so...issue filled, but with no substance or forcing you to dig deeper into the character. Its not even these story lines that get me, since all shows can sound bad when the story lines are described but the complete lack of subtlety used. (And when I say complete I mean it)

I'm sure this show can be entertaining but there are so many better shows out there. I wouldn't waste your time with this one.
