Terrible Screenplay and Direction
claudio_carvalho13 December 2005
In Thailand, the Americans Connor (Colin Egglesfield) and his girlfriend Amanda (Meredith Monroe) quarrel in a Muay-Thai fight, and Amanda leaves Connor alone. She asks the direction of the hotel to a stranger, indeed the mean vampire Niran (Don Hetrakul), and she is bitten and kidnapped by his gang of evil vampires in motorcycles. Connor joins to a clan of "good" vampires leaded by Sang (Stephanie Chao), trying to save Amanda from the claws of Niran.

I expected that "Vampires: The Turning" were a good movie. The locations and the cinematography are beautiful; the very heavy music score is excellent; Stephanie Chao is gorgeous and attractive; but unfortunately, the screenplay and the director are terrible and the very loose costume of Meredith Monroe does not help her fallen breasts. The story is very short, and the unknown Marty Weiss uses long scenes with motorcycle race, fights and boring flashbacks to complete a minimum running time for film. My vote is four.

Title (Brazil): "Vampiros: A Conversão" ("Vampires: The Conversion")

Vampires on wheels who can do wi fu. A terrible attempt.
Fella_shibby18 October 2021
I first saw bits n pieces of this movie in the mid 2k on Sony Pix channel.

Revisited it recently.

This is the third installment of the Vampires film series although John Carpenter who directed the first film and produced the second film had no involvement with this film.

So now viewers can do their math.

There is one single decapitation scene, an unnecessary bike chase sequence n few unnecessary kung fu or for that matter wi fu scenes.

It has a hot babe, Stephanie Chao but her sex n nudity scene is one of the worst shot ever.

This movie has lots of vampires but no good action or gory stuff.

If it's action-horror you want, it's action-horror you'll get.
I_Ailurophile2 October 2023
2002's 'Los muertos' may not have been meaningfully connected to John Carpenter's 1998 film 'Vampires' in any regard, but at least they shared narrative concepts, tying them both to John Steakley's novel. There will never be any shortage of vampire movies in the world, nor people to watch them, so the fact that someone decided this specific example should be lumped in with the prior two - neither perfect, but both entertaining - rings rather hollow. There is no substantive narrative unity here as 'The turning' tells a story wholly separate from the others, in a wholly new setting, and for whatever points of comparison one might make, it's effectively the same as generically saying "it's a horror movie." All this is to say that for whatever value this 2004 (or is that 2005?) title may boast, someone behind the scenes made decisions that paint it as a simple cash grab. That's unfortunate, for while this is marked with troubles all its own, and is far less than perfect, it's also passably enjoyable, providing the flavors we crave of the genre. You could do better; you could do worse: save it for a day when you want something relatively light and frivolous, that doesn't require active engagement.

Yes, for better and for worse this is nothing special. The one loose, vague kinship this shares with the aforementioned flicks is in broad ideas like an organization of professional vampire hunters, some special facet of the plot that hinges on the sun, and some of the vampire hunters' equipment. Otherwise, this is pretty much on par with contemporary genre fare. As it was filmed in Thailand, we get no few shots and scenes that serve no purpose other than to accentuate the international setting. The filming locations are lovely, to be fair, and the art direction. Some instances of cinematography and editing are pointlessly overzealous, but that's not a fault exclusive to this. The stunts and fight choreography are terrific, and practical effects; CGI is less than great, but I assume this is a reflection of what was surely a more modest budget than some other features may claim. Some exposition and reveal of background information is a little clunky; some sequencing is self-indulgent. The root story and its ideas are quite fine, if unremarkable, and likewise the scene writing; the dialogue is quite ill-considered at points, but not so atrocious as to distinctly leap out as a distraction. The pacing is a bit languid at times, but so it goes.

The music is fine. The direction is fine, and unquestionably at its sharpest where action sequences are concerned. The acting is earnest, if constrained by the weak dialogue, and direction that is less sturdy when there's not some discrete bonanza of invigoration before our eyes. If you want an action-horror picture that will give us blood, gore, and martial arts, and maybe some instances of imagery that's disturbing in one capacity or another - well, you've got it. While 'The turning' has its flaws (including a needlessly drawn out, artsy sequence preceding the final stretch), there's no one flaw so deep and glaring in these eighty-odd minutes as to be a flashpoint of criticism. There is, however, one overarching issue facing this piece, and it's that for all the earnest skill, intelligence, and hard work that went into it, there is not truly any moment where it can make us feel the impact of the violence or the narrative. An action-horror film has successfully been made, but it comes off as more than a little bland, unoriginal, and stock - film-making and storytelling "by the numbers," if you will, or "connecting the dots." I hardly mean to discount anyone's contributions, but by some concatenation of circumstances - Marty Weiss' direction, D. B. Farmer and Andy Hurst's screenplay, the influence of producers Carol Kottenbrook and Scott Einbinder, and/or something else or some combination thereof - that word I used before, "generic," does seem all too fitting for what this vampire movie has to offer.

There are moments when the production bears flavors that are more particular to itself, reflecting the culture of the setting; there are some extra smart notions on hand, arguably not explored as much as they could have been, that lend a more realistic and therefore darker edge to the tale. Would that these flavors had been a more dominant quality all along. What it comes down to is that there is honest value in 'Vampires: The turning' that makes it fun and worthwhile. At the same time, unless you have an endless hunger for action-horror, a void in your soul that no other cinema can fill, there's no especial reason to seek out this one title. For what is done well I want to like it more than I do; for those ways in which it is very much part and parcel with its brethren, and unexceptional, maybe I'm being overly kind. Take it or leave it; I'm glad I took the time to watch, but there's no driving necessity to do so. Once more, leave it for something relatively light to watch on a quiet day, and that might be the best way to appreciate this slice of horror.

Vampires: The Turning
mw80810 January 2005
This was a movie with a soul. It does not rely only on gore and shock. It had an interesting love triangle, a strong point of view, a stylized look from an exotic city in Thailand, and amazing action. It took the vampire lore and molded it into far Eastern mythology -- An American couple's troubled relationship tied into the vampire mythology as a metaphor was really interesting. The actors were really great. There was really good chemistry between the actors who played Connor and Sang and I love how the ending played out. Fantastic visuals for a lower budget film. Overall, a very fun film that elevated the genre. There hasn't been an interesting vampire film like this since "The Hunger." Give it a 9.

This movie sucks !
Lady_Targaryen13 December 2005
I watched this movie tonight and I do need to say that it is horrible! I expected it to be great, because you know, usually we don't have many movies about Asian vampires mixed with Asian culture; but already in the beginning it started in a bad way: the introduction of the movie seemed not to have an end! The plot is so weak and if you take the fights and the soundtrack off, you really don't have anything useful at all! The director of this film doesn't look to have some important notions about how much time to spend in introduction and flashbacks for example.( not to mention some other things)

For people like me, who wants to watch a great vampire movie, I really recommend to watch ''Lost Boys'' or ''The Interview with the vampire''.

World Premiere
cdusher2 January 2005
I watched the world premiere of this on the Starz Action channel. They call it Vampires: The Turning. The plot was a little confusing. There is a voice-over in the introduction about an 800 year war, and I didn't quite understand. The movie is about a young couple somewhere in Asia (maybe in China, I don't think the movie specifies). The couple has an argument and Meredith Monroe runs off and is kidnapped by a biker gang of Vampires. The boyfriend finds a group of vampires that don't kill humans, and enters into a battle with the bikers. A human group of slayers somehow get involved, and the final fight sequence takes place during a solar eclipse. This movie is not related to either Vampires or Vampires: Los Muertos. Confusing, but decent action. Four out of 10 stars.

Amped-up Vampire Antics for the MTV Generation
rstef119 November 2005
An in-name-only sequel to John Carpenter's Vampires, this movie takes place in Thailand and involves a sect of bad vampires, who enjoy killing people, and a sect of good vampires who do not. While it's an interesting idea to set a vampire film in Thailand, the writers don't seem to do a lot with the exotic locale. This film could just as easily have been set in Los Angeles. Which brings me to my next point, which is that this seems a lot like Blade Lite. We've got the rock soundtrack, the martial art battle scenes, a dance club bloodletting and, of course, lots of sharp objects going through vampires. What we don't have is the budget and talent. Yes, the hero is a good martial arts fighter, too bad his acting wasn't as good, and there's plenty of decent wire work, and tons of revved up fight sequences, maybe too many. The problem is they just don't have the same impact as the ones in any of the Blade films. Perhaps it's just that the film has a "been there seen that" feel to it.

However, for me the biggest problem was that the filmmakers didn't take enough time to establish the relationship between the lead, played by the buff and bland Colin Egglesfield, and his girlfriend. She gets snatched at the very beginning of the flick after a whiny exchange with her boyfriend. We have no vested interest in her welfare at this point and no reason to believe that her boyfriend would be willing to risk his neck to save her. Now that's a major drawback when that's the major thrust of the plot.

In the end, you could do worse than waste 85 minutes of your time with this, but I can think of a lot better things to do with your time, like renting any of the Blade movies.

sluaghan-macdonald-130 August 2005
Man oh man, this was a piece of dog sh#t. I read a few reviews on here after seeing the case in the local video store, and thought to myself........ Ah this seems like a half decent movie.Vampires.Swords. Thailand. How can you go wrong? Right? No,no,no way f*cking wrong. Jesus, if only I could gouge out my eyes and not remember this film, I would be happy. The lead actor had THE whiniest, gayest voice ever.Man!It really was bad...."Amandaaaaaaaa....","I gotta save my girlfriend...." F*ck off! My buddy and I actually changed the Audio Track on the DVD to Portugese just so we didn't have to hear the guy's voice. Subtitles and all...and this IMPROVED the film. I'm serious, if your anything like me and wondered what this film was like..STOP WONDERING. I have the answer. WORST VAMPIRE MOVIE EVER! No good action, no good gore and only the smallest smattering of nudity. Just pure sh*t for 90 Mins. Don't rent this, buy it,think about it,or watch it at 3:00am. It just doesn't cut the cake......at all....in any way. F*ck this movie and watch All Anal 7: Real Deep Cover. You'd have a better time. I'm sure.

Very bad movie
jimmi-morrison18 February 2006
This movie is really bad. The hero can't play. You see too much that he learned his walking moves by heart. And believe me, he walks a lot. For 45 min, nothing happens. He only walks to places and gets out..... Like if the story was so short that they had to extend it by adding useless and boring "looks-like-a-suspens" scenes.

Dialogues are very poor. I counted around a lots of "hello's" and few "hang on" on the 1st part.

Blood is orange like the Mercurochrome you put on kid's blisters. And scenes are not following themselves. A bloody neck on a scene, a clean neck on the following.

The story could have been improved. Yeah I mean what the hell is the story?

Martial arts? Where? Is that martial arts? Watch how hesitant and slow are the moves!!!!! If giving a kick and receiving a punch is called martial arts, then I am Bruce Lee!!!!

The only good point I have found is on fight scenes : They don't play with zoom and fast switching scenes that gives you headache in most of action movies.

There are plenty of low budget movies that are great. That one was just to make money. Nothing else.

Low Bidget Deluxe-O
jimmyjungles20 September 2005
Well I watch tons of movies and this one really sucked ... BIG TIME. I am sure we are all sick and tired of the low budget ploy to make Vampire Movies using some "Martial Arts Teacher" turn "actor" type of movies. I am also so tired of the guy knowing some form of fighting technique and then able to fight his way through a somewhat boring Movie. I forced myself to watch it and one of the main reasons were that the Lead Actress is quite Pretty (Ha-Ha) Well I hope this helped a bit and if you have time and want to give your Brain a rest Watch it!!! Well hopefully one day this type of movies will not be released but then hey where will all the Low Budget actors go :-)

The movie also contains many Bloops but that I will leave to you to find because it adds quite a bit of fun while watching and also if you a bit of a perfectionist it will bother you ;-) Cheers!!

Story never really goes anywhere!
jfwhelan6 October 2007
There's a good story well hidden and never really used!

The film is short and overly dependent on action and thematic photography; somehow, character and story development have been forgotten. What is left is muddled and superficial.

Turn off your brain and watch—you will probably find that the time goes quickly enough, but unless you are the sort of person that finds soaps deep and meaningful, you are going to get no real satisfaction from this film.

Watch only if you have nothing better to do and then only if someone else pays for the video rental.

Dom Hetrakul Bites!
masibindi2 August 2005
Polished performances, eye candy performance artists; exotic locale; ingenious plot points; incredible new vampire mythology; nice martial arts choreography; tight script; good editing; dynamic FX; expert direction; great date flick. Colin Egglesfield is heroic as he attempts to save his girl from vampire villain Dom Hetrakul; Hetrakul is enigmatic like Jason Scott Lee as Father Uffizi in Dracula II The Ascension / Dracula III The Legacy; Patrick Bauchau of "Kindred" (and various other vampire films) is an old favorite. Like "Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires", this movie features exciting action sequences and scary supernatural entities. Stephanie Chao and Nophand Boonyai execute their roles with affection. Enjoy!

You take the good, you take the bad...
crappyemailrepository16 July 2006
...and you kill an hour and a half. Despite the low score on IMDb, this movie is not a 4-out-of-10 vampire movie. Anyone who thinks it is does not know the depths to which vampire flicks can sink. This was a (mostly) competently acted movie with good production value and fun martial arts. Rather than lots of bad SFX, we get a few okay SFX (mostly freaky contacts, fangs and dead-vampire-melting) a net gain in my book. It's predictable, but most vampire movies are, and there are no gaping plot holes, or at least not larger than in most movies.

That said, it's not Hamlet, at least not well-acted Hamlet. The main actor isn't particularly charismatic, and seems to have one basic expression throughout the movie, which I read as "fierce determination," but at least he *has* a facial expression (try van Helsing in "Way of the Vampire" for the alternative), and it fits with his mental state for most of the stuff. Stephanie Chao is no great shakes either, but she's pretty, and has a natural sincerity to her voice that makes up for some of her lack of emotion. They should have given Meredith Monroe more to do.

This is, too, only a bastard step-child (yes, that's what I meant) of John Carpenter's Vampires. It has a new origin of vampires that is not really compatible at all with the original. It does keep the winch, but it looks like they put it in just to prove some kind of family resemblance. If the producers actually paid anything to get in on this franchise, it was a waste of money, since they didn't bother to put in any element (other than the winch) from the original.

Overall, It's far from the worst such movie, but not nearly among the best. If you like vampires and kung fu, and movies with a photogenic cast, this is a good way to waste 84 minutes, especially if you've got some kind of unlimited rentals. Just don't go out of your way unless you're a genre fan.

Why, oh why, oh why?
KingPhilth16 August 2005
Firstly, I'll admit I haven't seen Vampires: Los Muertos, but I've seen the original Vampires film and love it. I rented this film having heard nothing about it. I didn't expect to be impressed. I wasn't.

I love the idea of shifting the action to the far east, which should have opened up a lot of new avenues for the action sequences as well as the story line, but not enough was made of this. The fight scenes and the motorbike chases were painfully boring.

There were some parts I liked, like the way the slayer team weren't shown as heroic good guys, as they were in the first movie.

I'd been hoping since I saw the old Hammer movie Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires a few years ago that someone would one day make another good Asian-based vampire film. This was not it.

A solid action thriller
drocklin10 January 2005
"Vampires: The Turning" is a fun, well-filmed martial arts thriller with a horror pedigree. It's a sequel to the John Carpenter film series in name only, and carries forward the Slayer concept from the first two. But the main story is a pretty cool bit of Eastern mysticism with a Thai backdrop, involving two warring sects of vampires that were both spawned in the wake of a solar eclipse. The female leader of one sect wants to wipe her kind out, as she unwittingly loosed all sorts of mayhem. The upcoming solar eclipse is her only chance of doing so, and she enlists an American kickboxer to help her. The movie looks great, moves swiftly and sports some solid martial arts (muay thai) action, as well as some effectively creepy moments. Doesn't hurt that the female vampire is quite the hottie. A solid, fun entry into the genre. Definitely check it out!

WOULD YOU DIE FOR ME?
nogodnomasters24 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Connor (Colin Egglesfield) and his girl friend Amanda (Meredith Monroe) who have nothing in common go to Thailand where she is kidnapped by evil vampires called NIran. In order to save her he hooks up with the good Sang vampires. Unlike real vampires, these vampires travel by motorbikes instead of running faster than automobiles or turning themselves into a bat. That's pretty much it. Most of it is shot at night so we miss out on the scenery.

The film is formulaic and boring. A few cliches and minor attempts at humor.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Boring sex scene. Stephanie Chao in sheer outfit.

Yeah, what do you expect?
rdoyle294 December 2017
An American kick boxer visiting Thailand with his girlfriend loses her to a bunch of vampires and has to team with a group of friendly vampires and a vampire hunter (Patrick Bauchau) to get her back. This is positioned as a sequel to John Carpenter's "Vampires" ... but no, it really isn't. BUT ... it has kick boxing, vampires and kick boxing vampires, so really, what more can you ask?

Too bad....
loser_grl30 December 2005
The plot is simple: an American couple is in vacation in Thailand. Somehow they are attacked by the 'almighty' Chinese vampires, and the girl is kidnapped by the big boss of the vampires. This is OK till now. The girl's partner is left to search for her. And now the horror begins. He comes upon a strange group of semi-vampires or something (they only drank animal blood). These vampires are in conflict with the bad guy for about...800 years. However, with the help of the 'good vampires', the guy begins to search his girlfriend.

Now the fight scenes begin, what a karate movie without fight? Another thing i have noticed is that the vampires are very ugly guys. I mean....a vampire is an old-fashion guy(he is alive since...for ever), he's got style. There are also modern vampires, but in this movie, the vampires are....weird. Like, come on, they ride a bike, they are all dressed in leather and they destroy everything in their way.

The worst thing is that you can clearly see that this movie it is an low budget one. The script is boring and the actors aren't too talented. The music is pretty good, but the effects are not that great.

To sum up the movie it is not that great, but if you have a free afternoon, watch it and tell me if i'm right or not.

I fell asleep to this
TheHorrorCowboy19 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie "Vampires: The Turning" isn't even really worth the 2 out of 10 I'm giving it. The movie, is very predictable from beginning, up to the very end when our hero kills the leader of the Vampire Slayers. The use of music in this movie was even bad, it kept playing as if you were to expect something significant to happen at any second, though it never did. The acting, was B-Rank at best... And the movie was just, dull. The only reason I give this movie a 2 out of 10 is because the story, had potential though it ended up unable to deliver. Oh, and did I mention the wardrobe? The wardrobe for this movie was obviously cheap to "non-existent" because our hero, and his girlfriend (whom he's trying to save throughout the entire movie) wear the same outfits through the entire movie. I'd suggest this film only if your really bored, and don't have a good wall with fresh paint to watch dry. ~Dave, the Horror Cowboy

Entertaining horror/action hybrid
Woodyanders23 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Two opposing vampire factions fight for supremacy in Thailand. The ruthless Niran clan wants to feast on human blood while the benign Song Neng group wish to peacefully exist with man. American tourist and karate expert Connor (a pretty wooden, but still likable performance by Colin Egglesfield) must enlist the assistance of the Song Neng after the Niran abduct his girlfriend Amanda (a charming portrayal by the insanely foxy Meredith Monroe, whose incredible ample cleavage threatens to upstage everything throughout). Director Marty Weiss handles the cool premise in a flashy kinetic manner, relates the fun story at a constant brisk pace, stages the fierce bloody'n'brutal martial arts fights and lively action set pieces with fierce go-for-the-throat brio (a lengthy motorcycle chase rates as a definite exciting highlight), pulls off a few genuinely creepy moments, and makes the most out of the exotic location. The imaginative script by Andy Hurst and D.B. Farmer offers an inspired and energetic mix of horror and action elements. The capable acting from the mostly sturdy cast keeps the picture humming: Don Hetrakul makes for a marvelously smooth and wicked villain as the evil Niran, Stephanie Chao contributes a strong and moving turn as the soulful and melancholy Sang, Roger Yuan does well as the wise and benevolent Kiko, and Patrick Bauchau brings a winning dry wit to his colorful part as droll ace vampire slayer Raines. Geoffrey Hall's slick cinematography gives the film a cool stylish look. The moody and spirited score by Tim Jones hits the flavorsome spot. A nifty flick.

Enjoyed this movie
punkin_flats8 May 2005
My husband and I enjoyed this movie. We had watched a lousy rental the previous evening and were afraid this would be bad also. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The main characters were believable and quite sexy and romantic in their trip to Thailand. We always enjoy a vampire movie with a different "twist" on things and this surprised us. There was Ong-Bak (Muay Thai) type of fighting, beautiful costumes (both men and women), original female Thai vampires and the cinematography was top rate! The beautiful and exotic surroundings added to the mystery of the movie. I would tell others who enjoy a variation on the vampire theme to watch this one.

Unknown, unwatched, and not at all bad.
darth_nax3 February 2005
This show isn't bad at all, even if it's not terribly original. The premise is one of good vampires vs. evil vampires with the obligatory mortal stuck in the middle (they must do that because they think it helps people relate). The setting of the movie is Thailand, the lead actor is a normal human amateur Muay Thai fighter. He teams up with professional vampire hunters to find and kill the vampires responsible for turning his girlfriend. Overarching this story is one of the vampires creator trying to undo the curse that brought vampires into being. A curse for which she is responsible.

The production values are better than most low budget horror flicks, the action is also well done. Acting is passable but the overall story is weak but well told. The biggest downfall to this movie (it being so action oriented and all) is that there a "atmospher setting" type scenes that drag on too long. Interrupts the flow of the movie without really adding anything significant. If you like these type of movies this will be a treat, if your bored and need something to watch this it a decent choice, if you like comedies and dramas there's nothing to see here.

Way Better than it has any right to be
NormAbrams26 March 2005
This is an entertaining combination of Kung Fu and horror. The performances are decent and the action/fight scenes are well choreographed.

The film moves along at a brisk pace. You won't be bored.

There's very little sex or T&A, unfortunately, but I won't hold that against it.

While no "Citizen Kane", This flick is way better than I initially thought it would be. It's a worthy diversion for an afternoon.

With all the absolutely worthless crap that Hollywood releases nowadays, it's a shame this never got a wide (or any) theatrical release.

It seems as if this was intended to be the first of a series. If that's the case, I'd definitely check out any sequels.

The first vampire movie that tells the true allure of vampire flicks
tonyjohnsonfl24 January 2005
Throughout the history of Vampires and movies, there has always been an unspoken sensual, sexual tension that earlier movies could not, and more recent movies failed to really explore.

This movie finally captures the true potential of that story line without at all being pornographic.

In this Story line, Vampires seek out people they are attracted to, they bite them and take them back to their layer. They continue to keep them and drain them of blood until the person gives in and offers themselves to the vampire for sexual gratification. It is the sexual act itself that turns the victim into the vampire.

In this movie, the vampires have a seductive quality that other Vampire flicks have eluded to. But here you see the struggle of the victims who are torn by their unexplained sexual desire to give in to the vampire and the resistance to becoming one themselves. If the victim continues to resist, eventually they are drained of blood and die. However, if they give in to the vampire and have sex with him/her, they are granted eternal life.

That aside, it was an excellent film combining martial arts special effects with the Vampire story line. It was well acted and I enjoyed it.

Good Vampire Movie
monkey-man8 September 2005
When i hired this movie i thought that this movie would be the worst horror/Vanmpire movie ever made but then i watched it and it turned out to be so dam good and the best Vampire movie since Blade Trinity and the best Vampire movie of 2005.And i can not understand why this movie is rated so low on this web site it is rated 3.7 and it is NOT a 3.7 it is at least a 6 out of 10.

There are some good gore scenes in this movie with a lot of blood and the special effects are mostly good but some times they get a bit crap and there are some really great martial arts scenes in this movie.

Over all this movie is good and if u liked the martial arts in this movie u should watch the great movie Ong Bak and my rating for this movie is 6 out of 10.
