Disappointing Direct-To-Video Movie That Should Have Been Better
jmaruyama5 February 2004
Having watched episodes of the original 1969 Toei TV Series (which were recently released to DVD in Japan), I was really looking forward to seeing this new movie adaptation (sequel) to the popular series. The cast featured among others the gorgeous and leggy Sato Eriko (who is soon to star in the Japanese big screen adaptation of Go Nagai's Anime "Cutey Honey") and "Bounce No Ko Gal's" star Okamoto Yukiko. Unfortunately what resulted was a lame and almost half-hearted attempt to ape the recent "Charlie's Angels" movies albeit with less than stellar results. The action is rather lethargic and surprisingly uninspired even with the presence of several gals from the Japanese Wrestling and Extreme Combat arena. Sato Eriko fares better than her co-stars as she is given a lot of screen time and a fleshed out character. The others are basically stereotyped "cool girls" who are relegated to "window dressing" and showing off their ample "assets". Granted the original "Playgirl" TV Series was no better but it still had a sense of "'70s" charm about it and at least gave the gals more to do than just stand around and be cute. The production screamed out low budget and almost seemed as if to be rushed together to take advantage of the hype that "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" was generating (another disappointing film). This was a needless remake that should not have been. This is one of those instances where indeed the TV Series was a lot better than the movie.
