Actor Charlie Murphy and writer Steven Knight explain the background to real-life series four newcomer, union activist Jessie Eden…
Not every new character on Peaky Blinders is gifted an entrance like the one given to Jessie Eden (Charlie Murphy) in the series four opener. Filmed from behind in slow-motion, Jessie walks in to one of the Shelby factories with all the swagger of the boss himself, accompanied by a cover version of Tommy and the show’s theme song, Red Right Hand. Before she’s even said a word, Peaky Blinders makes clear that in this world of gangster bosses and mafia villains, she’s also someone to be reckoned with.

After choosing not to address the Harvey Weinstein situation last weekend, “Saturday Night Live” took on the scandal in a sketch set at a New York Film Festival panel last night. Viola Davis (Leslie Jones), Marion Cotillard (Cecily Strong), and the fictional Debette Goldry (Kate McKinnon) discuss sexual harassment in Hollywood — namely the “uncanny” resemblance between Weinstein’s face and genitals.

“Have I ever been sexually harassed?” asks Goldry, who’s many decades her colleagues’ senior. “Good Friday, where do you want me to start? One week after Saturday Night Live made last minute cuts on jokes about Harvey Weinstein‘s sexual misconduct scandal, the sketch show came out swinging against the movie mogul.
During Saturday’s “Weekend Update” segment, Colin Jost and Michael Che jumped right in with Weinstein jokes, combined with the news of Apple’s new emojis.
“Apple announced it will add hundreds of new emojis to its iOS system including a person at a spa, a vomiting face and a shushing finger — finally giving emoji fans the ability to describe what it was like to work for Harvey Weinstein,” host Jost said.

If you have frequented the film and television minded corners of the Interwebs in the past month or so, you might have heard about a potential Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike looming on the horizon. How big will Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” be?
Continuing to forge ahead after its record-breaking opening gross last weekend, the live-action remake should outgross three new releases by about 150 percent. It’s unfair to judge any of the new titles against juggernaut “Beauty,” which has already amassed $206 million (unprecedented for pre-May) in its first five days domestic, $428 million worldwide. This weekend “Beauty and the Beast” looks to fall somewhere in the $80-100 million range and should hit a staggering $300 million in its first ten days.
This makes it hard for any newcomers to make much impact.

There is silence no more. After screening for hundreds of priests at the Vatican yesterday, the floodgates for reactions to Martin Scorsese‘s Silence have now opened. While an official review embargo is still set for later this month, select critics in New York and Los Angeles had the chance to see the director’s long-gestating adaptation of Shūsaku Endō‘s novel and, for the most part, it sounds like it was worth the wait. Ahead of our review, check out the reactions below (and we’ll add more as they arrive) along with a link to the full score, now available to stream.

With “Suicide Squad,” Warner Bros. and D.C. Comics for the second time delivered an opening competitive with a Disney/Marvel superhero movie. Its strong August-record-breaking $135 million debut also kept the recent late summer rebound alive. The question is: Will it hold or suffer the fate of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and fade quickly? Whatever its future, “Suicide Squad” marks a welcome start late in a bumpy summer.
Part of that seasonal trend is steep early-week drops for some live-action franchises—neither “Jason Bourne” nor “Star Trek Beyond” show much strength after strong openings. And Stx boasts a sleeper comedy hit driven by women– “Bad Moms” is thriving and looks to have a shot at reaching as much as $100 million.

Sands remains an opaque figure, but Brendan J Byrne’s film makes a persuasive case that his 1981 hunger strike lead directly to the Good Friday agreement
Here is a documentary that needed to be made: a careful, well put together film about the Ira prisoners who went on hunger strike in 1981 to campaign for prisoner-of-war status, led by Bobby Sands, who became a global icon of anti-British protest during the 66-day ordeal which ended in his death and those of his comrades.

Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic leads the charge for topical movies premiering at this year’s Tiff, including fiction features about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the aftermath of the Good Friday agreement and the trial of David Irving
It was shunned by film studios and plagued by Pokémon, but now Oliver Stone will finally premiere Snowden, his biopic of the National Security Agency whistleblower, at the Toronto international film festival in September.
The film, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, is based partly on a book by the Guardian journalist Luke Harding and follows the former security analyst from his time in the Us military to his exile to Russia after he leaked thousands of classified documents.

Queen Elizabeth had quite the comeback when an Irish politician asked about her well-being during her first public appearance since the historic Brexit vote on Monday. As Northern Irish politician Martin McGuiness walked into her room at Hillsborough Castle, Belfast, on Monday, he greeted the monarch, "Hello! Are you well?" "Thank you very much," the Queen responded. "I'm still alive!" The dry reply comes after a difficult few days for her country, which has seen Prime Minister David Cameron resign, the pound hit a 31-year record low and England's soccer team defeated by Iceland in the European Championships. "Nice to see you again,...

Peaky Blinders delivers a blisteringly strong episode packed with memorable moments and moral debate…
This review contains spoilers.
When Curly told Tommy it was bad luck to have killed a stag, it wasn’t just gypsy superstition talking. Stags are symbolically linked with Christ in Catholic art. It’s fitting then, for an episode framed by religious acts—Polly’s confession, Tommy’s forced act of contrition—that the beast died on Good Friday.
The Easter Sunday resurrection however, looks like it’ll belong to Tommy. Series three now having reached the traditional point at which Tommy Shelby survives a beating so brutal it’d kill any other man (with two more series confirmed, what else could happen?), we left him blind, bleeding and at death’s door.
But still swinging punches, as is the Shelby way. Before letting Ada call an ambulance, Tommy launched a desperate counter-attack on the Economic League.

In the recent past we have seen filmmakers scaling up the production of their respective films with bigger budgets and even bigger stories. While most of the filmmakers are constantly seeking that prime extended weekend slot, if not a solo release date, every now and then there are inevitable clashes witnessed at the box office with two big ticket releases going head to head. After the much talked about clash between Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani in December last year, we now hear that the sequel to the well-received Bahubali: The Beginning, which is titled Bahubali: The Conclusion, will clash with another big sequel Robot 2.0.
Coming to the big clash, while Bahubali: The Conclusion, directed by SS. Rajamouli featuring Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati, Sathyaraj and Ramya Krishnan was originally slated to release this year. However, few weeks back, Karan Johar announced the new release date of April 14, 2017, which happens to be Good Friday,...

Former 90210 actress Jessica Lowndes is dating Saturday Night Live veteran Jon Lovitz, who is 31 years her senior.
The 27-year-old actress teased her fans with a series of posts on her social media pages over the Easter weekend hinting at a new relationship.
The first post came on Good Friday (March 25), when Jessica shared a shot of a man's hand on her legs with the slogan "There's a new man in my life..." along with the caption: "His hands are wise and tell a thousand stories… #smitten #hatersgonnahate."
She then posted a picture of two bowls of ice cream, writing: "You say sugar daddy but I say ice cream daddy! Lol (laugh out loud)."
Jessica followed her pictures with a video clip, which showed her saying: "No, I haven't been hacked. I'm just really excited to be able to finally share this secret with you guys," before then sharing a snap...

The Rolling Stones proved to 500,000 Cubans, you can always get what you want ... if you wait long enough. Mick Jagger and the boys played for free in Havana. Mick welcomed the crowd in flawless Spanish, "Hello Havana. Good evening to my Cuban people." The group opened with Jumpin' Jack Flash and went on for 2 hours, as the crowd roared with approval. The Stones ignored the Pope's request that they refrain from playing on Good Friday.

Good Friday can put many in a reflective state of mind when it comes to faith, and in many different ways so will Hulu's The Path. Debuting on March 30 with two episodes and the rest of the 10-episode first season rolling out weekly after that, the drama series created by Jessica Goldberg and executive produced by Jason Katims is a journey that opens up many beguiling narrative avenues. In fact, as I say in my video review above, with the streaming service's ever-growing…...

Batman and Superman are proving a huge draw in their first meeting on the big screen. Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — in a key win for Warner Bros. — is off to a superhero-sized start at the Easter weekend box office, where it grossed an estimated $82 million from 4,242 theaters on Good Friday, on par with Jurassic World's Friday in summer in 2015 and one of the top Fridays of all time. At this pace, BvS could open as high as $172 million in North America, the No. 4 opening of all time

Family animation still UK No 1, despite competition from ‘spiritual successor’ to Cloverfield and new film on the block, High-Rise

Latest instalment in The Divergent Series is no match for DreamWorks’ high-kicking franchise, and London Has Fallen defies the critics to come in third
While the February half-term holiday this year saw Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks Animation all sit out the contest – ceding the field to Fox’s Chipmunks franchise – it’s a different story this Easter. Good Friday sees the arrival of Disney Animation’s Zootropolis, and it’s already begun popping up in previews, with more to follow. It’s been preceded by DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3, which cruised to an easy win at the box office with £3.18m from 583 cinemas, plus £1.59m in previews, for a total of £4.77m. The weekend number is very similar to previous entries in the franchise, although more aggressive previews on the earlier films pushed those totals higher. Kung Fu Panda debuted in July 2008, with £3.11m plus £2.96m for a £6.07m total.

In July last year, we saw the release of the South film Bahubali: The Beginning. The film that was presented by Karan Johar's Dharma Production went on to become surprise hit of 2015, breaking almost every rule of box office success formula. In fact the audience couldn't stop raving about the film with numerous memes being created and viraled around this epic. Post the Bahubali's, everyone has been waiting for the release of the film's sequel with bated breath. In fact, the much awaited sequel was set for a clash with the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal during Christmas 2016. However, now we hear that the clash has been averted as the release of Bahubali: The Conclusion has been shifted to 2017. If what we hear is true than the question 'Kattapa ne Bahubali ko kyun mara?' will now be answered only on April 14, 2017. Bahubali: The Conclusion directed by S.S. Rajamouli featuring Prabhas,...

As we near the February 11 release date for Kanye's latest album, Swish, we've been awash in all sorts of Yeezy samples and Good Friday goodies, tracks old and new. But it appears that the rapper will be keeping things (relatively) simple on Swish, with just ten tracks in the album. Kanye posted the track list on Twitter tonight, writing "so happy to be finished with the best album of all time." The list includes the already-released "No More Parties in L.A.," "Real Friends," "Wolves," and "Fade," along with newcomers "Nina Chop," "Waves," "High Lights," "30 Hours," "Fml," and an especially hard-to-parse entry that appears to read "Faith Stretch My Hands." Kanye previously hinted that "Wolves" would be the first track on his new album, so it's possible that this track list should be read backward.Kanye's writing pad also comes with a note that reads "Kylie was here," which would...

Over the weekend came word from the trades that the second season of Marvel and Netflix's "Daredevil" would be going slightly earlier than the mid-April bow of the show's first season.
Now, BirthMoviesDeath suggests that a specific date has been set - March 25th, the Good Friday over the Easter Holiday Weekend. It also happens to be the same day that rival DC's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opens in cinemas.
No confirmation from Netflix or Marvel has come through about said report, but it has already ignited plenty of tribalism be it Marvel vs. DC or even TV vs. film with a lot of incredibly jaded and reactionary talk in response popping up in either comments or far too hastily penned and under prepared opinion pieces.
Neither production is in direct competition, and the launch of Netflix & Marvel's "Jessica Jones" opposite the final "The Hunger Games" this past...

Throughout the supplements on Arrow’s new (rather impressive) Blu-ray edition of this landmark gangster film, nearly everyone involved speaks of their collective desire to simply make the best film they possibly could, and in many ways, The Long Good Friday is just about the most natural result of that pursuit. Nothing goes unaccounted for, the characters are all richly drawn, the narrative drive is forceful without overwhelming a chance for reflection, and there’s just enough of a mystery to the whole thing to keep the audience hooked. The satisfaction that can come from such a well-rounded, expertly-delivered film can sometimes, however, be diminished by the sheer contentedness of the thing. Life is unwieldy, unpredictable, and sometimes incomprehensible, and films that ignore those qualities in the pursuit of “perfection” can feel closed-off.
