Wong Kar Wai mixed with Claude Lelouch
Mag-N-olia26 May 2015
SHE AND HER CAT is beautiful, sensitive and isolated, differ from the other Japanese animated short, it's more European.

Two lonely heart, few dialogs, and absolutely none-stop voice-over, the Wong Kar Wai style it is, e.g. Chungking Express. Obviously, Makoto Shinkai is more sentimental.

And sometimes the short subject feels like A MAN AND A WOMAN, directed by Claude Lelouch, tremendously moving, extraordinary deepening.

It seems that I should dislike the film. However, I still enjoy it. Because Makoto Shinkai show the honest feeling about love in a man's heart.

Never have I seen so much detail in 5 minutes
Chibi_Tai13 June 2004
A beautiful short film that is an extra on the Voices of a Distant Star DVD. In a mere five minutes, you are taken into the world of the cat, Chobi, and his life with his beautiful owner, known to him as "She". I can't really say too much without ruining the experience. There are 3 different options to watch it in (digest, 3 min or 5 min), I advise watching the 5 minute version, you'd be surprised at how much more detail is in it. The only minor problem I had is that there is no dub. Normally I dislike dubs, but I feel if they had done a good dub it would have given me more time to admire the imagery.

Words really can't do this justice. See it for yourself.

A Force to be Reckoned With
ShortoftheWeek16 October 2007
Makoto Shinkai is a force to be reckoned with. The buzz surrounding his 2002 film Hoshi No Koe, (available on domestic DVD as Voices of a Distant Star) catapulted him to fame in his native Japan, eliciting hyperbolic claims of him being the "next Miyazaki" That film, a 30min mix of 2-D and 3-D animation was as celebrated for its novelty as much as anything else—it was created by Shinkai entirely at home on his Macintosh—but his followup, the beautiful feature film The Place We Were Promised In Our Early Days, demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt the skills of an animator with a beautiful visual sense.

This short, Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko (She and Her Cat ) is an early work by Shinkai, done in 1999. A charming monochrome piece, the story relates the relationship between a young Japanese woman and her cat, told from the perspective of the cat.

Pretty and endearing, the film is also an excellent primer on a number of common anime stylistic techniques—mundane objects slowly panned and artistically framed, ellipses of black, and on-screen text, serve to balance the whimsicality of a woman and cat love story with an almost nostalgic sadness.

So Very Touching.................
highflying_falcon5 March 2006
I have always enjoyed watching films that are quite, soft and touching to the heart and in a way "old fashioned" to enjoy a Saturday afternoon and this film fits the bill exceptionally.

The use of classic black and white images to convey the mood and atmosphere of the story was wonderfully done and as short as the story was it wasn't necessary to go any further because it had already left a life long impression on me.

The woman referred to as only "she" by the cat wasn't always on screen but when she was you could see just how beautiful she was by the way her hair and and body was shown in each of the frames in the screen shots.

A very moving short film that is highly recommended for a lazy Saturday afternoon in the suburbs.

Cat's are sweet, aren't they?
noizyme14 October 2004
I loved this short about three seasons between a girl, her adopted cat, and the cat's new lover. The cat certainly had an entertaining and very animated prescence in the film. The graphics were great, even in black and white. The story was very sweet and focused on the dialogue of the cat as it gets adjusted to its new environment, its newfound love in a cat (Mimi, cute), and it's adoration and loyalty to its new owner.

You should see this one on the Voice Of A Distant Star DVD (American version) because those two together are a delight. I gave this short film a 9/10, and many other people loved it, too...it won a few awards I think.

She and Her cat
Horst_In_Translation20 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very early film by Japanese movie-maker Makoto Shinkai. 16 years ago, he wrote, directed and voiced the narrator in this one. He was in his mid-20s when he made this black-and-white film and built a nice career on this early effort, including "Voices of a Distant Star", another successful short movie from him, but also a couple full feature films.

This film here is about a cat, voiced by Shinkai, and his special relationship with his mistress. We also find out about another cat he meets and about life in general. This is a film that does not really tell a story, but more relies on atmosphere and emotion in an almost poetry-like manner. Still, unfortunately, it did not work for me to an extent where I would recommend it.

The seasons of the cat
Atavisten27 May 2005
Three seasons of this cats life is summed up in five minutes by the cat himself. He goes dating with Mimi in summer and she wants to marry him, but seeing as they are both kittens and he has an affair with an adult woman he cant do anything but make empty promises to her.

Its a pleasant short with lots of detail. The drawings are wonderful all made in black and white depicting the city realistically. The story is likewise interesting from the perspective of the cat. You can really tell a story in five minutes, thats remarkable.

If this is made by a débutant it looks very promising for hers/his carrier.

Beautiful cat
labhidhoble27 December 2023
I'm just in love with this anime, I have no words.it is so simple and short that it makes me think more. I have seen alot of anime but this anime have a special place in my heart. It's called silent love. The only kind of love i could relate to, don't we all love that way without even using a word. That love is so big that we just simply be silent. I wish I had better way to express it but. I love this anime so much that's all I could say. Watch it! It's short and sweet. Someone like me from a corner of this world wants you to see this anime. Hope whatever I wrote makes sense because I'm bad at express.

Amazing movie
akshaypatil-9268428 November 2022
I watched the movie in end 2022 ! It's hard to believe that the movie was made in 1999 ! If I would've seen the movie in 1999 i would've 100% said the this is the best movie I've ever seen. I can definitely relate to this movie as I have lost many cats and dogs in my life ! As an animal lover i always admire the animation which includes animals ! This anime portraits the cat in a most perfect way ! Although I watched this in Hindi dubbed , i still loved it ! Amazing details and makoto Shinkai is always a treat to watch ! Will definitely watch his other movies and work soon ! The your name movie is simply outstanding.
