Edgar Wright was, by his own account, "21 years old, living in North London, broke and on the dole – that's British for 'welfare'" in 1995 when he was struck by what he can only compare to a near-religious vision. The filmmaker was in the process of editing his first movie, a low-budget Spaghetti western homage, but the future director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had nothing lined up and no sense of what he really wanted to do with his life. And then he put on "Bellbottoms," the first...

When I was seven-years old I had a Kool-Aid stand and with my profits bought my very first album -- The Beatles' Second Album. I remember walking the several blocks to the Acme store and praying that they still had a copy in the album rack. They did. I couldn't wait to get home and play it on my portable record player. I carefully placed the needle on the very first track on side one of that magnificent album and... my life would forever be devoted to music in some shape or form. On that beloved album, the very first track was my favorite song -- "Roll Over Beethoven" -- by one Mr. Chuck Berry. At the time, I had no idea who wrote the song nor much cared. It was all about The Beatles. But as almost everyone knows, Chuck Berry wrote and recorded it years earlier. And...

Remember that time Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling recreated the famous Dirty Dancing scene in which Patrick Swayze lifts up Jennifer Grey? Well, Emma wishes she didn't remember that moment from Crazy, Stupid, Love. Emma and Gosling appear on The Graham Norton Show Friday to promote La La Land, and the 28-year-old actress admitts that filming that scene for their rom-com wasn't smooth sailing despite appearances. "The Dirty Dancing lift didn't go to plan. When I was seven years old, I broke both my arms because my gym teacher let go of my ankles when I was on parallel bars and I fell six feet to the ground," she recalls. "When we did the film, I knew Ryan was going to lift me up, but what I...

Emma Stone's dancing may appear flawless on camera, but the red-headed beauty admits she actually has some fears about the performance art form.
The 28-year-old actress was a guest on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, where she got candid on working opposite Ryan Gosling for the third time. The two currently star together in La La Land, following their performances in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad.

While rehearsing for La La Land, Stone said the process wasn't an easy feat -- "it was a little bit of a mind game" -- as she and Gosling were solo for most of their dance lessons.
"I would go to my tap dancing lessons every day, and I was learning these primitive moves, and every day I would ask how Ryan was doing," she explained. "They would say, 'He is really good, he is amazing...

Terence Davies’ films deal with repressed desire, longing, and emotional pain that springs from the depths of his characters’ souls, and yet, in person, the great British auteur is undoubtedly the funniest person in the room. He is all smiles and jokes as we sit down to discuss his glorious Sunset Song, entering a limited release this week, and a retrospective of his work at the Museum of the Moving Image. It makes sense that he is joyful rather than somber, because it makes one feel a sort of relief knowing that levity was welcomed between takes on haunting dramas such as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Deep Blue Sea. In Sunset Song, Davies takes on the first part of a trilogy written by Lewis Grassic Gibbons, in which we meet farm girl Chris Guthrie (a luminous Agyness Deyn) as she is forced to take on the reins of her life in pre-wwi Scotland.

Probably one of the more overlooked aspects of the filmmaking process is sound design, which can be a crucial element to any movie, but especially when it comes to genre projects. Sound can elevate a mood, hint at impending dangers, set the stage for the unusual and so much more.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to catch up with one of the busiest sound designers out there, Katie Halliday, who recently worked on The Strain, Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival, Pay the Ghost, as well as Antibirth, which is set to make its world premiere later this month at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
Check out what Halliday had to say on the inspiration to pursue a career in sound, some of the earlier projects she worked on, and her thoughts on the misconceptions of sound design.

When I was seven or eight, my little brother and I had Peanuts sheet sets. They were patterned with iconic scenes: Lucy leaning over Schroeder’s piano; Snoopy stealing Linus’ blanket, the kids playing baseball. The football, the kite, the slobbery dog kiss. But the pillowcase was my favorite. All the kids, standing and smiling, a giant voice bubble proclaiming overhead, “Happiness is being one of the gang.” I remember many Saturday mornings, waking up...

Everyone has a secret made up rockstar identity in their head, right? If you could play the actual guitar, not just air guitar, you know the name of your band, how you’d dress, the kind of music you’d play, which supermodels you’d date, etc. When I was seven, my fictional rockstar persona was lead singer of Emily and the Star Beamers. That has changed in the interceding years, but it’s still fun to think about when you are bored and stuck in line at the Dmv.
It’s also fun to think about what superheroes might look like if they rocked out instead of (or maybe and also) kicked ass. Artist Andrés Moncayo thought about that in great detail and whipped up these amazing illustrations of what The Avengers and the Justice League might look like if they were bands. Taking a moment away from her family, Christy Turlington covered the May 2014 issue of Redbook magazine.
The 45-year-old supermodel donned a super cute blue-and-white striped dress for the Pamela Hanson-shot front page while opening up about her work with Every Mother Counts and her visits to third-world countries.

On her memorable trips:
"When I was seven months pregnant with my son, my mother and I took a trip to El Salvador where she's from. Frequent visits with her to see my extended family have taught how different life can be if you are born into poverty. This time, we traveled with the humanitarian organization Care, and I visited a village where women were offered basic prenatal services when they came to collect water. At that point in my pregnancy I was seeing my midwife on a weekly basis.

Welcome to the fantasies of Justin Bieber. On May 10, Selena stopped by a local Hooters to hang with all the sexy waitresses and presumably grab some chicken wings.
Selena Gomez posted a very interesting picture of herself at a Hooters (a Selena favorite, by the way), the restaurant famous for its sexy, voluptuous waitresses. The “Come & Get It” singer posed coolly surrounded by Eleven hot servers — and she still stood out as the sexiest!
Selena Gomez Stops At Hooters
On May 10 Selena tweeted the photo along with the caption, “Me and My Hooters….. smh :).” We’re sure many (ahem, Justin Bieber) were slightly upset that it wasn’t those hooters that Selena was referring to, but it’s still pretty amazing to see the 20-year-old superstar surrounded by so many scantily clad women.
What also makes this picture great is how much of a “bawse” Selena looks in it.

Are you familiar with Latisse? Actress Christian Hendricks of Mad Men certainly is. You know the voluptuous redhead. She recently spoke on the subject of Mad Men, season five. Latisse, the special formula for “thick, sexy lashes” helps Hendricks look every bit like a 60s icon. You know, like Marilyn Monroe for instance. Well, beyond just using Latisse, Hendricks is also the campaign ambassador for the Latisse Wishes Challenge.
Linked to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, according to Vanity Fair, the campaign will roll along until November 30th. The fund raiser will see the Latisse company “double all donations up to $250,000″, and the very first 10,000 friendly participants (who donate a minimum of $20) will win a free trial of the Latisse flash system. That way you can look good on the outside and feel good on the inside.

Actress Emma Stone pulled out of plans to re-enact Jennifer Grey's famous Dirty Dancing leap in her new movie - because bad memories from a childhood gym class prompted a panic attack on-set.
When film fans check out the scene in Crazy Stupid Love, it will look as if Ryan Gosling lifts the actress aloft - just like Patrick Swayze did in the classic romance - but Stone reveals that's not her.
She tells BlogTalkRadio.com, "I had a panic attack so that was a stunt double from a distance. We tried a couple of times but it didn't work out for me. Ryan didn't do anything wrong. He thinks that I was afraid he was gonna drop me.

I really had a full scale hour-long primal panic attack. It was bizarre.
"But they were so nice to me. One of the directors, Glenn Ficarra, and Ryan were sitting with me in a bed in the house we were shooting in rubbing my back like, 'You're alright, we'll get the stunt double to do it.'"...

Apprentice candidates Natasha Scribbins and Susan Ma have told The Sun that they were both raised “in poverty.”
31 year old Natasha said that she worked as a child in order to help out the family finances, while Susan recalled a childhood spent being brought up by a struggling single mum.
Natasha said, “I went out and worked from a young age. It’s crazy – but I used to not take the free school meals and instead used the money I earned to pay for my food.”
And her Mum Gillian said, “She shared a bedroom. It was busy at times, but she just got on with it…
“On a council estate it’s leave school, get a job or get pregnant. Tash was doing the opposite to everyone else – she stayed in and studied.”
Gillian added that when Natasha went to university, there was little the family could do to help her financially.

The 29-year-old singer – who grew up in Houston, Texas – said, “Socially I did miss out. I left school at 14 and had a tutor. I was never exposed to people long enough to make friends so my family became my friends.”
From a young age Beyonce – who first found pop success as a member of girl group Destiny’s Child - knew she wanted to be a singer and although she often felt shy around her peers as a child she always “comfortable” on stage.
In an interview with The Sun newspaper, she added, "Very early on, my mom was telling me to be who I wanted to be.

Does it upset you when you see people arguing? Do you cry at the cinema? Empathy is one of our most powerful emotions yet society has all but ignored it. Autism expert Professor Simon Baron-Cohen reveals the science behind "the world's most valuable resource" – and how its lack is the root of human cruelty
● See how you fare in our empathy test
When I was seven years old, my father told me the Nazis had turned Jews into lampshades. Just one of those comments you hear once and the thought never goes away. To a child's mind – even to an adult's – these two types of thing just don't belong together. He also told me the Nazis turned Jews into bars of soap. It sounds so unbelievable, yet it is actually true. I knew our family was Jewish, so this image of turning people into objects felt a bit close to home.

Killer Film continues our The Sorcerer’s Apprentice coverage with a chat with star Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon, She’s Out of My League)!
How does it feel to be involved with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice?
Jay Baruchel: It’s a great honor to be part of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, but it’s also very stressful because Fantasia is cherished and beloved by so many people around the world. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice sequence of Fantasia is one of the most iconic and important sequences in film history, so I didn’t want to screw this up. If you were going to create a retrospective of great film moments, I think the Fantasia sequence would be up there alongside Cary Grant being chased by the crop duster in North By Northwest. It has been exhilarating to get the chance to do something so important to so many people,...

When I was seven years old, my mother had to pry the 'Cinderella' VHS from my clenched fist. At that time, if the characters were not drawn by hand, I was skeptical of a movie's validity.
She replaced my beloved animated fairy tale with what is best described as a "film" about a family who sings together for no reason at all. After I exhausted myself of whining, pleading, and ultimately bargaining to no avail, my mother and I shared a blanket on the couch and turned on 'The Sound of Music.'
The scenery was the first to capture me. The hills were indeed alive as the mountains of Austria rolled before my innocent eyes. Maria danced on the mountain with wild abandon, lost in her song of the brook and praying lark. I did not merely watch; I followed Maria through the Abbey, to her...

This is a month old, but still worth getting to. In mid June, Stephen Fry delivered an address on the state of British television at a BAFTA event; the full text of Fry’s address is here, and it is a fascinating read. In it, he reminisces about the TV of his childhood -- “When I was seven, Doctor Who started,” and lists other classic golden age series of British TV -- but then he goes on to say: It's fun to list all these programmes but is it perhaps pointless? This was then. But this is now. Those programmes meant everything to me because of the age I was perhaps, and because television was inventing itself in front of my very eyes. The twenty-three and twenty-four million plus who tuned into Eric and Ernie's Christmas shows can never be assembled together to watch a television programme again. Maybe if...

A decade ago, journeyman television director and editor Roger Nygard helmed “Trekkies.” This well-received documentary profiled the rabid “Star Trek” enthusiasts who give all other fans a bad name. What did he follow it up with? Well, a sequel. But after that? An investigation into “The Nature of Existence.” Says Nygard, “All my documentaries tend to be, it turns out as I look back, portraits of subcultures and human beliefs.”
But Nygard didn’t just go looking for another subculture to document. The questions he raises in “Existence” have haunted him since childhood. “When I was seven years old, I realized that I was going to die one day,” he says. He realized this when he was reading an encyclopedia article about tuberculosis. “I started to realize, ‘Hey, wait a minute! I cough a lot. I’m fatigued all the time. Maybe I have tuberculosis!’” Then, when he was 13, his dad died,...

Britt Collins and her boyfriend had a quickie ceremony in the gambling capital of the world. Would it be happy ever after?
Tiz looked crushed. "This is the worst day of my life," my new husband raged in our motel room after our wedding. "I want an annulment." Earlier that evening, we had positioned ourselves beneath the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign on the Strip for our wedding photos. I had sand in my hair, swollen ankles and couldn't be bothered to pose. As Tiziano, my husband, does everything with passion and ferocity, he was annoyed. Racing against the fading light, he set up each shot and rushed into the frame. "Are you trying to look like a raccoon?" he snapped, noticing my melting eyeliner. I dodged the slings and arrows of his put-downs and laughed. You can't beat the sulky appeal of a sexy, Marlboro-smoking Italian.
