Not a bad film.. Not bad at all.
john-penfold12 June 2005
I feel a lot of people have been way too harsh on this film. It's not an epic adventure or not the greatest film to hit the Irish scene in 2003 but it is very Irish. You can relate to some of the characters.. It's main attraction is humor and that it does well. This film is funny in a lot of parts but that is all it has for it.

The plot is a little thin but it doesn't have to be in-depth to get this film along. It follows Rats upon his release from Mountjoy Prison on his attempt to get his band together and make a break for it.

Spin the Bottle grows on you after a few times of watching it.. I think it's good for the Irish Film Industry to have films like this to be put out there. The more the merrier and I for one welcome Spin the Bottle. Good effort.

Funny Flick
rsp-51 July 2006
Look, this movie was, so, so. But the fact that it had is main fella, doing what he did because he wanted his granny to go to Lourdes, spelling wrong, lo. Whats wrong with that. Hell, I just thought the idea was fine, the movie, well, I guess we all got to make one before we go all, well you know, lo. That said, Irish movies seem to be having a hard time, well intermission was Fabe, but all the same, Mr Cruise and his fellow actors who take on the Irish accent, should take a moment and actually listen to how we speak, hold on I have just seen a rainbow, bet that pot of gold is at the en of this one. To end with, this movie was fun, I'm irish and wasn't upset. Guess that's because it was made by europens. lol. no offence at all, my fav movies come from Japan.

Loved it!
bkavanagh9 September 2004
'Rats' has just been released from prison - again - and he returns home to find he has been replaced in his mother's affections by his best friend Tommo. Not only that but the money they had painstakingly raised to send his cousin to Lourdes to get a miracle for her terminal obesity has been stolen! Rats decides that to get back in everyone's good books, he has to find a way to raise the cash, and to this end he reforms his pop group spermdotcom and gate-crashes the National Talent Show (like American Idol, or Pop Idol).

That's basically the plot but for me the humour that binds it together is what I loved about the film. As a Dublin 'cailin', i loved the dialogue and the irreverent depiction of a certain part of Dublin in the Noughties, and the low budget quality of this independent film suits it perfectly. I just wish I could find out where I can buy the DVD!

Terrible!
atomicb5 December 2003
This film is in it's own words "terrible rubbish"

If you liked Paths to Freedom and though it had original ideas, good acting and dialogue - then feel free to go along and waste your money.

They wondered why the Irish film board didn't want to give them money! I wonder what made them change their mind and fund it eventually - it couldn't be that they changed their mind on it 'not being funny'.

If you like 'funny walks', bad acting, crap dialogue, stupid stories or feel like losing 90 minutes of your life - then this is yer man!

Enjoy (or not as the case may be)

Much funnier than I thought it would be.

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't expecting much from this, but I thought this movie was hilarious. I watched 'Paths to freedom' and avoided this one because I'd heard it wasn't as good, but I just saw it on DVD and I thought it was great, should have gotten better reviews when it first came out really. Some really memorable moments that only Dub's and lovers of Dublin would really appreciate. McElhatton playing 'Rats' did the character just as much justice as he did in Paths, but the second funniest character was Keith the rocker, part of new band 'Satans Cock', This film definitely kept me giggling and there were some scenes where I was in convulsions, the 'Gee-man' conversation was one of those scenes.

Deadly!

This movie is funny as anything! Now, non-Irish, I think will hate this. Nobody but us Irish will like. I think, mainly, Dublin people will like it the most because we can relate to it the most. I think culchies might like it also, but won't relate to us like us. Maybe culchies will hate it because they make fun of them. It also makes fun of people from Northern Ireland. It's all in good fun, however. I like to see and Irish movie for Dubliners, seeing as most of them are made for culchies and Dubliners hate them. This time the shoes on the other foot! Anyway, Dubliners, check it out. Anyone else, stay away! However, if you do think of watching it, you might learn some Dublin words!

A great laugh!
fimcdee23 January 2008
I thought this movie was brilliant. If you were a fan of Paths to Freedom you'll love the comedy in this.

It was done on a low budget so obviously it's not as polished as most other productions, but with what they had it is definitely a cult Irish classic.

The lyrics of the songs featured in it are hilarious, but it definitely would not translate very well to a non-Irish audience. "You cultchie gaurds think you can come up here and act like narmal (sic) people!!"

And the cameo roles are great with Louis Walsh, Gerry Ryan and Miriam Callaghan really sending themselves up.

Rats is a genius
deisefan3 December 2003
I always loved the Paths to Freedom mockumentary so I went to see this film as soon as it came out. The characters are as brilliant as I remembered them, Tommo being particularly hilarious. This film will probably only do Ok in Ireland, but I think it will become a real cult classic. Can't wait for the video.

Goodbye slimming pills, hello to miracles!

This movie is great entertainment from 2004. The movie was created off the back of a 6 piece mockumentary commissioned by RTE called 'Paths to Freedom'. It focuses mainly on the lead character 'Rats' played by Michael McElhatton and his release from prison. After the savings for his morbidly obese auntie's trip to Lourdes is stolen Rats tries to help out but cannot hold down a job. His elderly mother is forced to work delivering pizzas on a scooter in order to gain money but when things take a turn for the worst and she has a road accident Rats is struck with an epiphany: Get the old band back together and enter the talent competition on national T.V. to win the prize money that will help with his auntie's trip to Lourdes.

There are some cameo appearances though out the movie like the late Gerry Ryan, Samantha Mumba and Louis Walsh. The movie is just a bit of fun and if you like inner city Dublin humour you will find this hilarious. This movie really didn't get enough recognition and I think it would be great if the character Rats resurfaced again.

I am giving this movie 8/10 as it is great Irish comedy and full of side splitting one liners like "ya look like Braveheart with a nappy on his head' and I am also a little biased. Please watch!
