Anthologies need to be consistent.
Madluke915 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Possible minor spoilers: nothing to integral with the film.

Bangkok Hanted is a 3 part anthology of 'ghost stories' being told by a group of woman sitting down at a restaurant. After the first story we see this. The first story is about a haunted drum, and is excellent. I personally was gripped shot by shot; the camera work is top notch. On top of this, the film has a unique visual style, and almost appears like an early 90's-late 80's film. This along with the soundtrack really do create a dark atmosphere. The soundtrack actually seems to take a leaf out of Dario Argento's book, as it implements drums etc. The main good feature of the first though isn't even the horror elements; it is along with the camera work, the excellent story-telling. A story i will never forget. 9/10

The second story is where the movie stars to show its poor production. This is a story about a substance which can get a woman any man she wants. All the woman has to do is rub the substance onto the man. But it has unseen consequences and the men who have this substance rubbed onto them seem to suffer terrible deaths. This stories problem is that it is terribly SLOPPY. The story seemingly skips from shot to shot, with little cohesion, the ability to tell a story seems to have been thrown out of the window, and the camera work seems to shift into mediocrity. I'm not sure whether all of the effort was intended for the first story, but this one becomes a chore to watch. Also this story begins the progression into terrible acting, without a single good performance.

The third story is actually better than the second, but a clear mile and a half behind the first. This story follows a police detective as he tries to solve a murder case, which his boss, despite obvious contradictions, believes was suicide. At the start we see a woman hanging. The idea of suicide you would expect to be implausible as we see the woman hanging about 8 feet off of the floor. The story then follows as he goes through the unofficial police investigation, going through the very few close friends, boyfriends etc. that the woman had. The ending to this one is very unique, and you'll remember it for a long time, but unfortunately it suffers from a terrible lead actor, who seems to be void of acting capabilities. He doesn't even as much as flinch his face throughout the whole thing. This piece of storytelling is also sloppy as apparently the investigator knows the person who hung herself(?!?) and this isn't at all clearly shown at the start!

So this is what i have to say: I would have to recommend watching this; maybe rent it if possible. I say this as the first story is top notch, absolutely superb. I gave it a 9/10, and if it was a stand-a-lone film, it would have been absolutely awesome. So give it a go, and hopefully the others can at least entertain, rather than being the chores they were for me.

One thirds good.
Polaris_DiB4 March 2006
We have a very strong start as we open upon a story that is sort of like an Asian phantom of the Opera with incest. A young girl and her brother live happily in a small village until one day traveling visitors bring a man the girl starts to fall in love with. Her jealous brother, with a deformed face he always hides, decides to wreak havoc, and the ghost of the young girl gets endowed into a drum that travels the country haunting whoever happens to be close by.

Tthhhheeeeennnn the movie reveals that it's just a story being told, and that three young Thai women at a restaurant are telling each other ghost stories. The thing about these types of narratives is that they fundamentally ruin the point of the stories in the first place. Horror is made to terrify, right? So how can we appropriately fear for characters' lives and souls when we know they're fake? Even beyond the level of fakenss inherent in any medium, we now are twice removed from the characters' psyches: once because we're actually watching a television screen, and twice because we're watching characters tell stories about characters that don't exist diagetically.

Worse, the next two stories turn out to have that wonderful flavor of, "Huh, I've heard variants of this before." Yep, suddenly we move away from the interesting story (which also, interestingly, had much better dialog, direction, cinematography, and just about everything) that held our attentions for 40 minutes, and then we follow two other stories for another hour and a half that are, when you break it down, merely urban legends.

Gee, and I was so enjoying the beginning.

To be fair, the third story isn't THAT bad, and since it's a mystery it's a little nice to follow. But the second story is just soo boring! It's very disappointing to be enjoying yourself and then have the director say, "Okay, so, we're done with that, now to move on!" Two things you should never do in a horror movie because it's no longer fresh and now it becomes slightly insulting: never have it end up being just a dream, and never have it end up being just a story.

Bangkok bored...
paul_haakonsen9 August 2013
For an Asian movie about hauntings, then "Bangkok Haunted" was quite dull and anything but scary, actually. And this is an anthology of sorts, as the movie contains three different stories - all of which, mind you, are nowhere near impressive or scary.

The first story is about Jieb who receives an ancient drum from a shipping company, although she didn't order it. The drum is tied to a tragic story where a young dancer named Paga falls in love with Fond. And while a misshapen man named Gnod loves her, and doesn't have his love returned, he sort to a final, drastic measure to keep her with him. This story was actually the best of the three, but it wasn't particularly impressive in itself.

The second story is about Pan, a woman who will do anything to find real love. Finding out about a strange essence that her neighbor uses to lure in men, Pan decides to give this a try. Little does she know that the essence is created with the blood of the recently departed. And those under the influence will come back from the dead if they die while under its charms. This story was adequate, but just didn't really make much sense.

And the third and final story is about a police officer who is investigating a case of a hung woman, which he believes is suicide and not murder. Well, this turned out to be more of a love story than an actual ghost story.

Overall, then "Bangkok Haunted" is fairly weak and doesn't even remotely have the usual level of horror and scares founds in Thai horror movies. And if you enjoy these kind of anthologies, then there are far better choices available on the movie market.

I like how the movie has this branded on the DVD cover: "eerie and disturbing, each one of these stories is sure to curdle your blood and chill your spine..." Right, indeed, I guess the one who wrote that haven't watched particularly many Thai horror movies if he or she found these three stories to be blood curdling and spine chilling.

Horror film that fails to scare
cdoreilly18 June 2003
As with most people familiar with Oxide Pang, my introduction to this movie came through the creepy spook film, "The Eye". I was genuinely impressed with The Eye, and, eager to find more films by Oxide and his brother Danny, i came across Bangkok Dangerous and Bangkok Haunted. Dangerous is a flick about a mute assassin, which i found to be very well made with some excellent editing and solid direction. Unfortunately, Bangkok Haunted failed to impress. I only found out after viewing the movie that only the third segment was directed by Oxide Pang, and Danny (the man behind the brilliant editing in Dangerous) had nothing to do with the film. From the start the movie attempts to creep out the audience, but the elaborate ghost stories are neither scary nor visually impressive. Throughout the three segments of the film, the spooks fail to spook, and the film fails as a horror flick. Clocking in at over two hours, this is an over-stretched movie that could have fitted easily into three half hour segments. While there are promising thing to be taken from the film, the stories are generally boring and more laughable than scary. This film could have been alot better, and i am glad that i rented it instead of rushing out to buy it.

Bangkok Bored (to death)
rainking_es10 February 2006
I had watched "The Eye" before I watched this one. I really liked "The eye", it was one of the best movies of the recent Asian horror-cinema. So, I picked this "Bangkok haunted" because it was the same director, and it was kind of popular round here. But man, what a disappointment... "Bangkok haunted" are three stories about love, revenge, ghosts, etc. that are no scary at all, not even disturbing (as "The eye" was)... no nothing. I can't even fill the 10 lines required for the comment...

100% boring.

Three Original Ghost Stories
claudio_carvalho8 June 2007
Three young women gathered in a coffee bar in Bangkok tell and discuss three original ghost stories with each other:

1) The Ancient Drum: In Bangkok, the young Jieb receives an ancient drum not listed in the order from the truck of Transportation Company owned by Mr. Anake. She calls her former Professor Arkom, who identifies the markings for good luck that she describes and tells the story of the orphan Paga. In 1917, the renowned music teacher Jangwah-Chuem and his wife Peng raise the beautiful Paga with their deformed son Gnod. Paga is a good and loving sister and daughter and becomes a great beautiful dancer. When Paga falls in love for the handsome Fond, the jealous Gnod and she vanish from their village. Jieb investigates the mystery of their disappearance and discloses the eerie truth with tragic consequences.

2) The Love Potion's Price: The gorgeous Pam receives a sample from her next-door neighbor of a love potion ("Ply Essence") that makes the user irresistible to men. Pam does not know that the essence is made of blood of dead women and uses in a man in a night-club, who becomes an insatiable lover. When she uses in her acquaintance Tim, she finds the price of the aphrodisiac.

3) The Revenge of the Dead: Detective Nop is in charge of the investigation of the death of a woman called Gunaya found hanged in a distant storeroom. He does not accept his chief position of suicide and he is convinced that it is a murder case. He investigates the husband of the victim, Vinal, and her former boy-friend In. When he believes he has solved the case, there is a twist with tragic consequences.

I am a great fan of the Pang brothers and I liked "Bangkok Haunted". The first tale has a promising beginning, an excellent development and a disappointing conclusion. It is funny that the three friends make the same comment in their conversation. The second tale is creepy, in spite of the lack of explanations about the love potion. The last one has a promising beginning, an excellent development, but I was confused about the relationship of Gunaya with Nop. I understand that she has plotted revenge against her abusive husband; her cruel lover, but it was not clear for me how was her connection with Nop. I intend to revisit the last minutes of this story to check if I have not seen any important detail. The DVD is spoken in Thai with English subtitles and I need to pay too much attention reading the lines. The surprising conclusion, showing how haunted Bangkok is, is excellent. My vote is seven.

Quick Review: BANGKOK HAUNTED
Bonnascope10 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
THE BEST: The cover is deceiving. The curiosity that each argument incites.

THE WORST: How poorly made it is. We have 2 directors, one of them the creator of "THE EYE", and they bring us... this? Three stories whose plot had promise but whose filmmakers make it so dizzy that you end up not giving a damn about each story. Because you come to the conclusion that: 1st This happens... 2nd You don't know why, 3rd no one explains it to you (ever), therefore, 4th What the hell am I seeing?

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: 3 stories related, mixed or... I don't care... about spirits and ghosts. I'll try to tell them (more or less without spoilers):

1) A girl receives an old drum by mistake, that drum has a ghost in the pack. The girl will know the history related to that drum that dates back to 1917.

2) Another girl, she receives from a neighbor a kind of potion whose powers supposedly make any man surrender at her feet. To all this while in parallel there is a guy who works in a morgue who does "strange things" with girls' corpses...

3) Another girl is found hanging by the neck. Possibly it is a suicide. But the police officer investigating the case thinks it is a murder. In all this it seems that the girl's spirit is helping the police to find her murderer...

ONLY FOR: Those who see it and understand the 3 stories the first time. Those who want to use it to compare it with the theories of Socrates: "I only know that I know nothing."

Spoilers:

WORST #2: I simply didn't understand the first story. I don't know why things happen and what it has to do with what. The 2nd one makes a little more sense but you still don't know why they die, why they appear, what's happening?! It's the only one that makes sense, if you look hard enough. It could have been better. And the 3rd, okay yes, it seems like a very typical episode of C. S. I./Cold Case etc... But the ending is so poorly told that it is simply impossible to be surprised. It's not because you saw it coming, but because you don't see the point. Pay attention to the screw-ups in this episode: Constant axis jumps. At this stage!

Great movie - doesn't overuse the scares
epsilonman7 July 2006
I thought the movie was fantastic. The scares weren't over-the-top at all; neither were they overused. Some horror fans will be disappointed by the lack of many, but I thought that when the scares DID come, they were fantastic. Oxide and Pisuth definitely know when to utilize a scare within a certain scene and I thought this movie was just overall, amazing. Great stories, good endings, and awesome cinematography.

The only negative that I can give is that the stories were slightly confusing, but definitely not impossible to understand. And characters are used over and over again in different stories, so it was sort of hard to follow characters when they were someone else in a different story. But like I said, another watch-through, and it cleans up all the loose ends. This movie would definitely be useful to watch during a night with some friends over, so that discussion can follow and clear up what you missed. Awesome movie, but don't expect many scares--just like 28 Days Later, this serves as more of a drama horror film, rather than a true horror one.

Solid film-making...
poe42627 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Because I'd just recently seen an actual autopsy (How do you spend YOUR spare time...?), I picked up on the fact that the autopsy in the second segment of BANGKOK HAUNTED wasn't "anatomically correct" piles of latex foam rubber or cgi. A look at the extras on the DVD confirmed my suspicions. If you're one of those sick puppies who actually likes to see "the real thing," here it is. In the flesh. Despite that, BANGKOK HAUNTED is a beautifully crafted film that (in my own, ever humble opinion) never bores the viewer- and, if the superb film-making doesn't do it for you, just ogle the jaw-droppingly beautiful women. Storywise, I didn't have a problem with any of the three segments (and the third, with storytelling twist after twist, is guaranteed to satisfy even the most jaded mystery fan). The performances are likewise solid all around, but, again, it's the outstanding craftsmanship that makes BANGKOK HAUNTED worth seeing.

Totally Visceral Horror from the director of THE EYE
flickhead21 June 2005
I just received a screener of the Panik House DVD for this film, and the packaging is very impressive! I'm happy to report that the movie and the extras are every bit as impressive as well. This is an omnibus film co-directed by Oxide Pang, who along with brother Danny, directed THE EYE and BANGKOK DANGEROUS. There are three stories (told by three young women in a Bangkok Cafe) of horror and the supernatural shot in three distinctly different styles, while each fitting together quite nicely in the end. All of the stories have shocking moments of violence, but are never presented in an exploitive way, as thought the violence on screen is never superfluous and always serves to push the story forward. The first story, "Legend of the Drum" is a tale of murder a nd possession, and according to the "Making Of" featurette, the filming of this segment involved actual unexplainable circumstances, reminiscent of recently disclosed events on the sets of the original Exorcist and Wes Craven's Serpent And The Rainbow. The costume design is incredibly creepy. The second tale, "Black Magic Woman" involves an aphrodisiac, zombified prostitutes, and crazed axe-wielding killer, and may have involved actual cadavers. The third entry, directed by Oxide Pang, "Revenge" is the real payoff, and has a very original story structure and the best multi-level police procedural drama this side of CSI. Pete Thong-jeur gives a realistic and believable performance as a young detective convinced that a possible suicide is a case of murder, and the victim's spirit visits him throughout the investigation with ghastly consequence. The wrap-up is among the most original I've ever seen, and I'm going to run out and buy anything else with Oxide's name on it after this. The disc has a ton of extras. In addition to the documentary, there are trailers, a Pang Brothers bio written by Psychotronic Video Guide's Art Black (who also wrote the Thai Cinema Essay) and a lengthy still gallery. Oh yeah, it comes with a sticker, too. Great film, great disc.

DANCE AND THEN DRUM
nogodnomasters12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a tale about a haunted drum. It has flashbacks to the past as we see a sad tale of love. We then find out there are three women at a bar telling stories and this is a three story anthology. The second installment is a tale that involve an aphrodisiac and a little necrophilia. Our third tale is about a suicide investigation that a cop thinks was a murder. We watch it it go full circle. And as always the fourth tale concerns the story tellers which smartly ties everything together.

The film is available in both Spanish and English subtitles. It is typical of the Asian horror genre, with nothing really new to offer, If you like it, you got it.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity in second episode.

I saw this movie some time ago, hoping it was going to be as good as The Eye was, but I was greatly disappointed to see that the stories weren't very good and the scares were lacking. Don't bother checking this expecting another The Eye.

Haunting themes of the dark side of love......
joebloggscity13 August 2005
Bangkok Haunted This film reminds me more of a TV show like the twilight zone, a show of stories each separate in their own ways but have an overlapping theme. In this case, the three stories are entwined by themes surrounding the dark side of love, spanning desire, loss and revenge. Each story in there own right is an interesting tale, no doubts about that, each told by a beautiful lady, but the stories themselves are too short and seem to cut off just as they are getting interesting. There is a haunting feel to each (rather than outright horror), but the limited time scale does not do any justice to the tales. A shame as each story is well directed, acted and suspenseful. I'd recommend this for a viewing, but don't expect too much. Enjoyable fair.

Three supernatural tales are an okay mix that is weakened by the odd length of its parts
dbborroughs28 January 2006
A collection of three ghost stories:

In the first, which plays like a darker Beauty and the Beast, an antique drum ends up in the hands of a young woman who has to work out its secret before things turn deadly.

In the second a young woman finds a potion to make her irresistible to men, unfortunately it comes with a price.

In the last story a cop won't let go of suicide and finds that not only are things not as they appear, but that he should have left the whole thing alone.

Its nice to report that here is a recent vintage Thai horror film that isn't a misfire. Its also a relief not to see yet another Asian horror film with a girl with long hair creeping through every scene. This is a ghost story with a decidedly non western flavor thats a nice mix of old and new horror. I don't know if its scary as such but it certainly creates a bit of tension.

Although the stories are of various (but good) quality the only thing thats really off with this movie is the pacing. The films should either have been expanded feature length or shortened to something more manageable since the 40 to 45 minutes of each is just not right for the tales told. I felt alternately that things went on too long for what they were or didn't go on long enough and the film was "neither fish nor foul". However despite my complaint about the lengths I do like the stories which are good enough to keep you watching (actually the stories get better as the film progresses) The performances are good and the effects are excellent, I especially love the faces in the smoke.

This is a good movie. If you like horror films, and Asian horror films in particular I think you'll find this worth renting or taking the time to watch if you run across it on cable or satellite.

I think it's OK
Princess-D20 February 2004
I saw this movie long time ago about in December,2001 ,that day is the first day which this movie showing. I was very excited to see this movie because before this movie show in the theater it's very popular in Thailand. The trailers of this movie is so scary and creepy ,also it's got a great promotion which support this movie to be famous. When i saw this film,at the first section,"The legend of the arm of a beautiful dancer" I think it seems like a romantic horror.this section is make me feel complicated,I means that if you're not Thai maybe you won't understand what the film want to tell you,and if you don't get in Thai cultural, sometime you maybe feel boring in this section.About the actors in this section,I think the actress in the leading roll is fantastic ,even if this is the first time of her in acting but I think she (Pimmsiree Pimsri) is doing great so I think if i have to give a score to this part I will give it " 7 " points from 10. At the second part," Black magic woman" I think it's pretty bad,I think it's boring ,it's just about sex but I think this section is give us a moral that "You will get what you give".But if you're not Thai ,you won't understand about the legend in this part ;including the process of making the magic oil,and the erries occurences. If i give a point ,I will give it "6.5". At the last section,I love this part the most " revenges" this part is not scary but it's feel weird ,dramatic, sympathy and complicated.Although the actress in leading roll (Kanlayanat Sriboonrueng) is got a little scene but her eyes and emotion is so impressive .if i give a score ,i will give it "9".

'Bangkok Haunted' might also appeal to fans of the classic Amicus anthology style.
Weirdling_Wolf20 June 2023
This inventive, engagingly lurid terror triptych from Thailand remains an atmospheric, darkly compelling, deliciously haunting horror compendium! Like all spook-slathered anthologies, it's a mixed body bag, nonetheless, this sporadically chilling creepshow exudes a singular strangeness that makes it stick out from the shroud! Capable filmmakers, Oxide Chun Pang & Pisut Praesangeam deliver some shuddersome visuals, offering frightfans a uniquely twisted tableau of quintessentially Thai terror! I have a strong preference for blackened occult fantasies, and these eldritch excursions into hell are sinisterly steeped in folkloric fright. Macabre, stylishly shot, and fabulously freaky, I enjoyed every sultry, skin crawlingly creepy second of these ghostly far-flung tales, with the hauntingly off-beat 'Legend of The Drum' being a sinisterly simmering highlight!! While manifestly Asian, doomily drenched in eerie exotica, 'Bangkok Haunted' might also appeal to fans of the classic Amicus anthology style.

Stylish ghost tales but not too frightening
abisio22 June 2003
Three women are telling three unrelated ghost stories in Bangkok Haunted.

First `Legend of the Drum ` about a modern girl receiving by mistake an old drum and spirits showing her what happened to a beautiful dancer and a deformed guy whose not corresponded love for the girl ends up with tragic consequences. Second `Black Magic Woman' about a women so desperate for love that he resources to some magic lotion, not knowing it is made with dead people fluids, and kill those to whom it was applied.

Last and not least `Revenge' about a cop investigating the dead of a beautiful woman was nothing is what it seems. This one is the most complex and twisted of the group; also the one with less chills.

The first two parts were directed by Pisut Praesangeam and the last one by Oxide Pang Chun (creator of The Eye); it is easy to notice different styles, but there are some common elements on all of them, keeping an unity, atmosphere and an average quality on the whole movie. The camera work and character development are very interesting. The acting is acceptable.

Ghost appear everywhere, every time; but most of the time as part of the background, not relating with the characters. This creates some gratuitous but welcome chills in the spectator, compensating the overall slowness of the movie. Yes; pace is quite slow, and is not an horror movie in the standard sense; so those looking for gore or violent images will be somewhat disappointed, however this is not a psychological thriller either; blood and some violent killings or rotten bodies sporadically happen but never in a `Friday 13th' excess.

Conclusion: This is not gore, terror intensive Evil Dead nor a quiet 6TH Sense or The Others; it will not give you the creeps but will intrigue you enough to keep you in your seat for two hours and ten minutes.
