Have you ever believed in something so strongly that you made it real?
William Joyce definitely has.
The artist and storyteller, who wrote the books Dinosaur Bob and George Shrinks and did character design for the movies Toy Story and Robots, wanted his daughter, Mary Katherine, and son, Jack, to have no shadow of doubt that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy were real. So he began planting evidence — like a bad cop, or maybe the world’s best dad.
Those efforts have led to a series of books and an upcoming 3-D film from DreamWorks Animation,...

Everybody who claims an Academy Award is feeling pretty good in that moment, but perhaps no pair of winners on Sunday night were walking on air as much as the directors of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
In lofty terms, the short is about the immortality of storytelling. In simple terms, it’s about an avid reader who discovers a flock of flying books and becomes caretaker for their library-aviary.
Directors William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg were also hovering just above the ground Sunday after claiming their Oscar win over powerhouse Pixar. Maybe they should have been...

Despite my incessant frustration regarding Hollywood's obsession with adapting established intellectual property and books, somtimes a decent enough idea comes along that makes me forget my woes. Such is the case with Variety's recent announcement of DreamWorks Animation's new project The Guardians (due out in 2012), an adaptation of an upcoming series of books written by author William Joyce (who wrote children's books like Rolie Polie Olie and George Shrinks) which focuses on an Avengers-like assembly of imaginary icons like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny who protect children from the forces of evil. The film will be adapted from the forthcoming series entitled The Guardians of Childhood which is set to be published in 2011 (a long ways out). The guardians themselves are made-up of childhood imaginary heroes including Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Man in the Moon, Jack Frost and many more. This isn't the first time Joyce's ...

DreamWorks Animation caught the screen rights to kids book writer William Joyce's upcoming new work The Guardians and is in the early stages of developing it as a film slated for release in November 2012. Now the studio has hired David Lindsay-Abaire to adapt Joyce's work for the screen, giving the project a little bit of oomph because the writer is a Pulitzer Price winner for his lyrics on Shrek the Musical.
The book won't be out until the year before the movie. Joyce, the creator of George Shrinks, Rolie Polie Olie and Meet the Robinsons, will also receive a co-direction credit under director Peter Ramsey, newly promoted after acting as the head of story development on Monsters vs. Aliens.
