The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday gave syndicated daytime shows a boost during the week ending Jan. 23. With many viewers enjoying a day off from work or school Jan. 17, HUT (households using television) levels were up by an average of 2 million for the week. Those shows benefiting from the holiday included several rookies, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. Talker The Jane Pauley Show was up 6% week-to-week to average a series-high 1.8 household rating, while fellow talk show The Tony Danza Show jumped 25% to a 1.5, tying its season-best performance. Another freshman strip, surprise-makeover show Ambush Makeover, spiked 30% to a 1.3, also tying its season-best rating. Talker The Larry Elder Show jumped 10% to a 1.1.
Twentieth Television is set to ambush America with a marketing campaign for its syndicated strip Ambush Makeover, which launches nationwide Sept. 13. The distributor is launching a promotional campaign titled "Ready or Not, It's a Whole New You" that spans television, radio, online, outdoor, print and retail to "heighten awareness" of the surprise-makeover program, which has had a successful regional test run during the past year on a limited number of Fox O&Os. Twentieth is partnering with hair-care products manufacturer Paul Mitchell, hair and retail salon operator Regis Salons and natural health beverage brand Odwalla on a national mobile marketing tour featuring a 33-foot customized Ambush-branded RV that includes a hair salon and three makeover stations.

Ambush Makeover, the reality lifestyle show that has been testing in a limited syndication run since the summer, is set to get a national clearance push by Twentieth Television for fall 2004. Makeover has created enough of a ratings buzz in its outing on the Fox O&Os to prove that audiences have an appetite for this kind of programming, said Bob Cook, president and chief operating officer of Twentieth TV. Cook said the show has proved very popular with the female demographics that are key to daytime syndicated viewing. The half-hour strip features some of Hollywood's and New York's best and most celebrated stylists and makeup and hair artists, including Mary Ellis Haney. The show is produced by Banyan Prods. in association with Twentieth TV.

Banyan Prods., creators of the TLC hit Trading Spaces, received new episode orders for the spinoffs Trading Spaces: Boys vs. Girls and Ambush Makeover. Boys, a kiddie version of the home-improvement series that airs on Discovery Network's Saturday-morning block on NBC and the Discovery Kids Channel, has gone into production on 13 new episodes for its second season. After sticking to the Northeast last season, Boys will rove to such other cities as Atlanta and Richmond, Va., to shoot episodes. "The show brings the 'Trading' brand to the table and has done extremely well for itself on NBC," Banyan chairman Susan Cohen-Dickler said. Ambush, a makeover series launched on a select group of Fox owned-and-operated stations in June, got an additional 40-episode order.
