A great two parter done by the bbc Doctor Andrew John the son of the head of the Hospital falls in love with a miner's daughter Nurse Bethan Powell, the two soon become lovers but their families try to keep the two of them apart, as she comes from a different class to him. his father soon gives him a choice leave for a job in london or she loses her job, so Andrew leaves a broken hearted Bethan behind a scandal hits the hospital and she gets the sack, soon Andrew learns about it and comes back for Bethan but can he really expect her to want him, this is a great bbc mini series for those who love romances and the actor Jeremy Sheffield, Kate jarman who is a new comer makes, a great performance, and so does David warner as the head of the hospital.

GREAT LOVE STORY
magical-kingdom20 November 2021
Doctor Andrew John (Jeremy Sheffield); Hospital Administrator's (David Warner's) son falls in love with Nurse Bethan Powell....a miner's daughter. They soon become lovers in spite of challenges. Families try to keep them apart, because of different class. His miserable father soon gives him a choice 1) Transfer to a job in London or 2) Bethan loses her job. Andrew makes the ultimate sacrifice by leaving a broken hearted Bethan. Without knowing she is pregnant. Scandal reaches hospital administration and Bethan's fired. Andrew's overwhelmed with pain/sorrow. He learns of unknown details and comes back for Bethan. A wonderful, romantic mini series from BBC. Great performances by entire cast including Kate Jarman (Nurse Powell) a new comer.

Cliche Ridden soaper (Spoilers)
hexa-212 October 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This soaper doesn't miss a cliche. The poor girl , the slimey doctor played by Jeremy Sheffield (Alex Adams, Holby City) who beds her and shoots through. All the stereotypes are there: Dad, the Communist miner sacked by the unfeeling bosses, self sacrificing Mum, the brother who becomes a prize fighter to put food on the table, little sis who goes shoplifting to get a new pair of boots and the heroine who took up nursing because the family couldn't afford for her to be a doctor. Thankfully there are no whippets or racing pigeons (how they missed out on these cliches of working class life I'll never know). This series is an insult to anyone's intelligence.

A new record in how bad things can get
slofstra26 September 2023
... before it's all pulled out of the dumpster fire with a happily ever after ending. Normally, these things end just before she marries the other guy. This one goes a step beyond that, and still recovers. 3 hours of worse, and worse, and even worse and all neatly tied up in a bundle in the last 2 minutes. This one is just a little too contrived to be believable. And many of the characterizations based on class divide are implausibly extreme. An implausible degree of miscommunication drags things on for an extra hour of viewing. The overall effect is one of unmitigated dreariness.

It's saving grace is reasonably good performances, but the script is heavy handed and required a lighter touch.

Not uninteresting...

I am extremely biased regarding this production as i was an extra (according to BBC correspondence 'supporting artist'). It was a good laugh, you can see me in some of the scenes as a 'butler', a 'man on the street', and a 'tourist'. That guy sheffield was camp as hell, but david warner was cool. he even gave me one of his cigars. The actual series was quite boring when I watched it but there ya go.
