And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

Why is it that in cinema, remakes are so often reviled, whereas in theater, each new production of a classic play brings a fresh wave of anticipation, as we wonder how the director and cast might choose to interpret the characters this time around, and thrill to the idea of watching the material brought to life again? That question is further complicated in the case of Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” since no definitive big-screen adaptation of the 1896 play exists. Sadly, that will not change with the arrival of director Michael Mayer’s latest attempt, despite the tantalizing prospect of seeing actresses as great as Saoirse Ronan, Elizabeth Moss, and Annette Bening in the three leading female roles.
Whether you know the play well or are experiencing it for the first time, you may well find yourself asking, What was Mayer hoping to achieve? Despite the gift of Chekhov’s...

Colin Farrell is fully aware that he's had "some of the worst hairdos" in film during his long career.
The Irish actor was visited by the Ghost of Hairdos Past while on The Graham Norton Show - and, trust us, these cuts are pretty epic.
"Empire magazine did the top ten worst hairdos in film. I'm definitely three of those," he joked while looking back through his past styles.
We all remember that the Horrible Bosses comb-over was pretty frightening, but watch the clip above to see some other hair-rising 'dos from A Home at the End of the World, Alexander and more.
Don't worry, Colin. We forgive you for these fashion faux pas - but we're still not over True Detective season two.
Check out the full interview - including some chat about Daniel Craig's "really big one" - on The Graham Norton Show, airing tonight at 10.35pm on BBC One.

You might have thought you were done discussing these but I'm just getting around to posting about them, so don't shut your trap just yet. Here's five stories that we didn't get to in anything like a timely fashion but so what? Time is a flat circle.
Story 1 Colin In Talks
I was going to wait to post about this until it was official and not just "in talks" but since the internet moves with the speed of everything casually mentioned as fact that everyone is aware of and will be old tomorrow, it should be noted that it looks like Colin Farrell will be the leading man of True Detective Season 2 (possibly Taylor Kitsch beside him). Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey will be tough shoes to fill but as I relayed on twitter, he's a smart idea because people will be surprised when he's great because they haven't noticed that he often is.

Oscar voters, take note: Meryl Street and Robert De Niro will join forces for the fourth time with an adaptation of the best-selling Ann Leary novel "The Good House."
The dark comedy will find Streep taking on the lead role of real-estate agent Hildy Good, a barely recovering alcoholic whose harmonious life unravels when she embarks on a new friendship and rekindles an old flame (De Niro). FilmNation and Tribeca Productions will head up "House," according to a joint press released Tuesday.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham ("The Hours," "A Home at the End of the World') will adapt the novel, marking the third time Streep has taken a role in one of Cunningham's works. (In addition to the source material for "Hours," the author wrote the script for 2007's "Evening.")

While they already have the classic "The Deer Hunter," the underrated "Falling In Love," and the tough indie "Marvin's Room" under their belt, it has been seventeen years since Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep last graced the big screen together. But it looks like we won't have to wait much longer for another movie with the legendary pair as they've got a new project lined up. De Niro and Streep are now both attached to star in the adaptation of the recently published and critically acclaimed book "The Good House" by Ann Leary. Michael Cunningham ("The Hours," "A Home At The End Of The World") will adapt the book, a dramedy that tells the story of a recovering alcoholic finding love once again. Here's the synopsis: The Good House is a wickedly funny look at denial, told through the eyes of Hildy Good (Streep), a New England realtor and...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Can you still be "punk" if you're concept album launched a Broadway musical and is being adapted by the guy who wrote "Milk" into a feature film? Probably not -- but that isn't a concern for Green Day, the rock band that formed in the '80s and has evolved into a full-on media empire since.

It was inevitable that a movie studio would pick up the highly successful Broadway musical based on the highly successful compact disc put out by band Green Day. It’s fitting that it would be Universal to option American Idiot considering their growing interest in musical storytelling – or at least their proposed future in interest in telling stories like Les Miserable and Wicked. Deadline Neches is reporting that the studio has hired Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) to write his first screenplay that doesn’t involve real-life political figures. His skill is unmistakable though, and his political experience will help color this story about three small-town guys despairing at their suburban existence through pop-punk. I, for one, welcome the adaptation because it’s high time a screen musical involved shooting up heroin. Universal has also signed Michael Mayer to direct the film, which is an interesting choice. His Tony-winning, Broadway...

According to Variety, Shia Labeouf has signed on to star in Mandalay Pictures' adaptation of Joe Hill's novel Horns as the main character, Ignatius "Ig" Perrish, a young man who awakens after a debouched bender on the one-year anniversary of his girlfriend's rape and murder to find horns sprouting from his head that give him the ability to manipulate people and to hear their deepest, darkest secrets. Screenwriter Keith Bunin (A Home At the End of the World) is adapting the book and Labeouf is said to be "closely involved" in the movie's development. Hill—the son of horror master Stephen King—will executive produce Horns, with Mandalay's Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman producing.

Good news in the indie world today, as The A-Team director Joe Carnahan has finally received the green light for his Alaskan, man vs. nature thriller The Grey, to be led by late-in-life action star Liam Neeson. The film tells the story of oil-rig workers stranded in frozen tundra after their transport plane crashes. Among the many problems the crew must deal with is a ravenous, territorial pack of wolves out for blood. Think The Edge meets Jaws meets Alive. The rest of the oil-rig crew will be comprised of character actors Dallas Roberts (A Home At The End Of The World), James Badge Dale (The Pacific, Rubicon), Dermot Mulroney (The Wedding Date, Undertow), Frank Grillo (Edge of Darkness), Nonso Anozie (RockNRolla) and Joe Anderson (The Crazies, Across The Universe).

I sometimes think that there's a fine line between a literary novel and a parody of a literary novel. Case-in-point is the new book by Michael Cunningham, a Pulitzer Prize winner for The Hours (and also the seminal work of gay fiction, A Home at the End of the World)
By Nightfall (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, $25) is about Peter, a 44-year-old straight art dealer who starts to question if everything about his life — his career, his marriage — is a lie. Searching for the passion that has long since left his marriage, he finds himself falling hopelessly in love with the irresponsible, sexually ambiguous 23-year-old brother of his wife.
It sounds like a parody, doesn't it? Let's face it: the characters in these novels are always insufferably neurotic, upper-crust New Yorkers who have jobs like "art dealer" that give them lots of opportunities to spend their days ruminating on exactly what "beauty" is.

Julianna Margulies and Dallas Roberts in last night's The Good Wife
So a few months ago GLAAD called out CBS for not having any Kevins, Scottys or Kurts on its schedule. And cancelling that gay Super Bowl ad for the gay dating site didn’t help either. CBS responded by adding three gay characters to its shows this season.
Last night viewers met one of those characters on The Good Wife. We were introduced to main character Alicia Florrick’s long lost brother, math professor Owen Cavanaugh, played by Dallas Roberts, who some of us know as Jonathan from A Home at the End of the World, the “manny” on The L Word and fewer of us know as Miles on Rubicon.
If you’re under 57 and don’t watch The Good Wife, you should. Even without the gay bro, it’s an entertaining legal procedural.

Blurbs for Lawnboy compared Paul Lisicky to Michael Cunningham (The Hours, A Home at The End of the World, etc.), and the cover even boasted a blurb from Cunningham himself. While certainly flattering, how does Lawnboy compare?
Non-straight characters? Check.
Coming of age/awakening type plot? Check.
Complicated romance? Checkity-check-check.
But couldn't one say this about plenty of other books? Francesca Lia Block also had these things, but Wheetzie Bat and Lawnboy and The Hours are three entirely different books. Then again, it's been a little while since I've read Cunningham's work. Still, there is one clear way that Lisicky and Cunningham reminded me of each other: It took me the first third of the book to really get into it. That's not to say I spent the first third uninterested; I just questioned how...

Q: Dear winged simian, why isn’t the song "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush considered a gay anthem? I know the song isn't in itself gay, but the message, especially the last verse – “Don't give up, 'cause I believe there's the a place, there's a place where we belong" – says so much. Plus, it’s been covered by Willie Nelson, Sinead O'Connor, Sarah Brightman, and Gregorian monks! – Gilbert, Mcallen, TX
"Don't Give Up" by Gabriel/Bush (1986) and Ferraro/Gaga (2009)
A: What makes a song a "gay anthem" – or what makes any work of art go from "well-received" to "timeless" status?
Serendipity.
Seriously, think about all the books and movies and songs and TV shows that are released every year. At the end of that year,...

Q: I've noticed that Perez Hilton has turned so bitter lately. He has this weird obsession with John Mayer, and I'm not sure if he's bitter because he has a major crush on John Mayer and can't accept the fact that he's straight. Screen Gems has snapped up the rights to Beautiful Girl, a psycho-thriller from a most unlikely source: Michael Cunningham, author of worthy, weighty novels like The Hours.Of course, as anyone who sat through Stephen Daldry’s movie version of The Hours could attest, Cunningham would have to go some to come up with anything more terrifying, but with Beautiul Girl, he may well have managed it.It’s a story about a high school girl in her senior year who attracts the attention of her English teacher after she loses a lot of weight (six dress sizes, to be precise). But things start to unravel when the English teacher goes doolally and starts targeting anyone who was cruel to the girl during her heavier days.Sounds intriguing – Cunningham is a fine writer, whose credits also include the novel and screenplay for A Home At The End Of The World,...

NEW YORK -- HarperCollins Publishers is forging its first partnership to develop and produce films based on its large collection of properties.
The publisher is forming a multiyear alliance with Hart Sharp Entertainment offshoot Sharp Independent called Sharp Independent at HarperCollins. The division will acquire film rights to existing and future HarperCollins adult titles to create new films, housed in HarperCollins offices and overseen by Harper/Morrow president and group publisher Michael Morrison.
The move makes sense for HarperCollins, which has had big success with film adaptations from such titles as The Chronicles of Narnia series and The Pursuit of Happyness. But SI head Jeff Sharp's screen adaptations in recent years have been disappointments at the boxoffice.
Sharp's reported $13 million all-star adaptation of the novel Evening earned $12.5 million this year. His reported $20 million adaptation of the Broadway hit Proof took in $7.5 million in 2005, his $6.5 million adaptation of A Home at the End of the World earned just $1 million in 2004 and his reported $10 million 2002 adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby grossed $1.6 million.

A lawsuit that alleges A Home at the End of the World and S.W.A.T. star Colin Farrell is a stalker has been dismissed in Los Angeles. Dessarae Bradford accused the Irish hunk of harassing her, alleging he wouldn't leave her alone after initially befriending her. In a lawsuit filed late last year, Bradford claimed Farrell caused her mental anguish and demanded $5,000 from the star, plus the return of artwork and an erotic tape. But a Los Angeles judge has thrown the case out of court after hearing Farrell had never even met the accuser.

Irish screen star Colin Farrell hated wearing a wig for his new movie so much, he deems it the lowest point of his career. The badboy actor was required to wear the hairpiece for early scenes in A Home At The End Of The World to give his character a disheveled look. But Farrell admits he was horrified by his appearance - and steered clear of his own reflection. He says, "It was like they shaved a dog, poured glue on my head and put a blow dryer on it. I wanted to cut all my scenes until we got to the scene where it's all cut off. You have no idea how bad that was. It's like going to church when I was ten. It was horrible. Somebody asked me, 'What was it like when you looked in the mirror with that wig?' I said, 'Are you kidding? Why would I look in a mirror?'"...

Irish heart-throb Colin Farrell always wears his lucky underpants when he starts a new film - because they've never failed to bring him good fortune. The A Home at the End of the World star - who has been linked with leading ladies Angelina Jolie and Rosario Dawson - refuses to start work until he's donned the shamrock-design boxer shorts and has promised to keep up the tradition throughout his career. He explains, "My brother gave them to me. They're my lucky charm. If I don't have them, I won't come out of the trailer. They're starting to get a bit old now but I could never part with them."...

Hollywood hunk Colin Farrell has furiously slammed the Los Angeles media for criticizing his "bad language, casual sex" and beer drinking. The A Home at the End of the World star refuses to stop drinking, swearing and fornicating and complains the American media should put his wild lifestyle into perspective by looking at real bad boys like late German dictator Adolf Hitler. Farrell argues, "It doesn't take much to cause a fuss. I got the title already. Just by proxy to Ireland. You're Irish in Los Angeles and you drink a couple of pints and you're considered f***ing edgy. It doesn't take much to be a bad boy. I use bad language and I have casual sex and a few beers and all of a sudden I'm a bad boy. But I know I'm not. Hitler was a bad boy."...

Irish heart-throb Colin Farrell's first full frontal movie scene has been cut by worried film bosses - after test audiences were transfixed by the size of his manhood. The Phone Booth hunk disrobed for scenes in upcoming drama A Home at the End of the World, but after seeing the stunned reaction of viewers at a recent screening, chiefs decided to chop the naughty images. And the news has been greeted with fury by self-confessed Romeo Farrell, who has demanded the scenes must be included in the DVD release of the film. A source tells British newspaper the Sun, "All you could hear were gasps when Colin appeared in his full frontal pose. The women were over-excited and the men looked really uncomfortable. It was such a sight it made it difficult to concentrate on the plot, so the decision was made to get rid of it." Even director Michael Mayer admits, "It was distracting." In the film, Farrell plays a bisexual man caught in a love triangle.

Sissy Spacek is returning to the horror genre -- where she enjoyed one of her earliest successes as the telekinetic heroine of 1976's Carrie -- as she steps into The Ring 2 for DreamWorks and director Hideo Nakata. The Oscar-winning actress joins Naomi Watts and Simon Baker in the film, due to start shooting in mid-May. It's unclear exactly who she will play in the ongoing tale of a mysterious videotape that proves fatal to viewers because the script is being closely guarded; sources close to the film said the filmmakers want to keep a level of mystery around Spacek's character. DreamWorks co-heads Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing, with production executive Mark Sourian overseeing at the studio. Ehren Kruger wrote the script. Spacek is repped by CAA. She next stars opposite Colin Farrell for helmer Michael Mayer in the Killer Films indie A Home at the End of the World, which is being distributed by Warner Independent Pictures.
