Vin Diesel ‘Riddick’ box office: Underwhelming domestic debut Universal’s distribution chief Nikki Rocco may have called Riddick‘s opening-weekend figures "a great result," but an estimated $18.7 million from 3,107 North American theaters — $2.5 million of that total from 314 IMAX locations — for an action-packed sequel starring Vin Diesel is a disappointing debut. In fact, if studio estimates for the September 6-8, 2013, weekend are on target, Riddick‘s per-theater average barely surpassed the $6,000 mark: $6,010 per location, to be exact. And even though it’s true that the weekend after Labor Day tends to be pathetically slow at the U.S./Canada box office, and that this year’s top-ten figures were 29% above last year’s, Riddick‘s box-office gross undeniably fell below expectations. (Photo: Vin Diesel in Riddick.) Box office pundits, for instance, had been predicting an opening north of $20 million for the $38 million-budgeted, independently financed sci-fi actioner. And Riddick‘s opening-weekend gross...

Henry Cavill Superman: Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past [See previous post: "Man of Steel Trailing Original Iron Man in Ticket Sales."] As mentioned in our previous posts, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel grossed an estimated $113.08 million this past weekend, including $9 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Directed by Zack Snyder, the 2013 Superman reboot stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman. (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel.) Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer’s $270 million-budgeted Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman, debuted with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the box-office-boosting advantage of 3D surcharges, Man of Steel is obviously a much bigger hit than its immediate predecessor. Superman Returns eventually reached $200.08 million in North America, plus a slightly more modest $191 million internationally. Man of Steel will not only easily surpass Superman Returns at the domestic box office, but it’ll also earn at the very least twice as much as Superman Returns internationally.

It’s really been twenty five years? Honestly? It’s been a quarter of a century since New Jersey Cop John McClane spent his Christmas holiday bleeding and barefoot taking down Hans Gruber and his international gang of thugs after they had taken over an office building in La. Bruce Willis had done a couple of movies, but he was best known as a wise-guy private eye on Abctv’s ”Moonlighting”. The box office action smash of 1988 Die Hard changed his career forever. Willis has been on a Hollywood A-lister ever since. And now we have him playing Det. McClane for the fifth time this Valentine’s Day in A Good Day To Die Hard. But he’s not keeping “la-la land” safe this time, he’s on the mean streets of Russia (the locale of many thrillers these days). And he’s not facing the baddies alone (well, he...

Not a single film managed to pass the $10 million mark as Lionsgate's The Possession managed to stay on top of the domestic box office charts this weekend, besting openers The Words and The Cold Light of Day. Unsurprising news considering the appalling reviews both hold from critics. Bradley Cooper starrer the words at least made the top five list while Bruce Willis and Henry Cavill starrer Cold Light of Day didn't even make the top 12. Possession starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Natasha Callis and Kyra Sedgwick posted an estimated$.95 million on its sophomore run, showing a 46% change in comparison to its debut weekend gross of just over $21 million. The Ole Bornedal-directed PG-13 rated horror has a domestic cume of $33.9 million.

New 'Cold Light Of Day' movie delivered lots of action, drama & more. Summit Entertainment released their new action/drama flick "The Cold Light Of Day" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it,and thought it was pretty entertaining. It featured a lot of action, drama, some mild suspense, and more. It stars: Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Echegui, and Bruce Willis. In the new movie, character Will Shaw (Henry Cavill) goes to Spain to participate in a holiday outing that he doesn't really care for. His father Martin (Bruce Willis) picks him up from the airport. It turns out that Martin is involved in all types of shady things in various different countries for the government. One of the things that Martin is involved in,gets Will in quite a bit of trouble. At one point, Will and the family, consisting of a mother, sister and brother,...

Bruce Willis is having a pretty good year. Ok, so it hasn't exactly been spotless: few people liked "Lay The Favorite" at Sundance, and he's had some near-dtv level cameos in films like "The Expendables 2," this week's "Cold Light of Day" and the genuinely Dtv "Fire With Fire" (starring 50 Cent, who seems to be running some kind of sponsorship programme for aging tough-guy actors). But he also gave a lovely, atypical performance in Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," and according to early reviews today, including our own, is pretty great in Rian Johnson's "Looper," a film that Willis has described as the best he's ever been in. So what next for Mr. Willis? Well, 2012 brings a triptych of action sequels, with "A Good Day To Die Hard," "Red 2" and a cameo in the delayed, troubled "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," but it looks like the star's on the look out for another part.

Post-summer blues are likely to grip the domestic box office this weekend as the Bradley Cooper-Zoe Saldana drama The Words opens alongside Summit Entertainment's Henry Cavill action pic In the Cold Light of Day. Lionsgate's horror pic The Possession has a strong shot at beating both and staying at No. 1 in its second weekend. The film grossed $21.1 million over Labor Day weekend and has grossed $23.1 million through Wednesday.

Henry Cavill took a break between the heroic roles of Theseus and Superman to play an everyday guy in The Cold Light of Day. Perhaps unavoidably, though, the English actor's part in the suspense film turned into quite a display of derring-do.
"Cold Light of Day is an action thriller about different international secret services," says the heroically handsome actor during an interview in Beverly Hills. "They're trying to attain a briefcase and I get stuck in the middle of it. I'm an average, regular Joe who has to do extraordinary things to survive, perform death-defying manoeuvres and risky stunts to save my family. One of the secret agents is using my family as a way of getting what they want."

September is typically the slowest month of the year at the box office*last September set the record with a measly $607 million*and this year looks to be no different. Resident Evil: Retribution and Finding Nemo's 3D re-release should both do decent business, and Trouble with the Curve will generate a lot of interest thanks to Clint Eastwood's first on-camera role in nearly four years. Otherwise, though, things are looking pretty quiet, and it would be surprising if September 2012 set a new monthly record.September 7 - 'The Words' Vs. 'Cold Light of Day'The weekend after Labor Day is always a quiet weekend overall, but in each of the past three years there's at least been one movie that opened north of $20 million (Contagion, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself). There's absolutely no chance that happens this year; instead,...

The first trailer for Cold Light of Day is below to watch, it’s nothing to get too excited about. What’s interesting is the poster on the left, what’s going on with Sigourney Weaver? She’s clearly been transformed into a Terminator out to destroy some folks on vacation.
The actual plot is as follows: Will Shaw (Henry Cavill) goes to Spain for a week long sailing vacation with his family but his whole world turns upside down when the family is kidnapped by intelligence agents hell-bent on recovering a mysterious briefcase and Will suddenly finds himself on the run.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer, Cold Light of Day opens April 6th.

Summit Entertainment's action thriller also stars Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver.
In the first trailer for the thriller Cold Light of Day, star Henry Cavill is getting plenty of action.
He stars as a man who, while enjoying a nice family vacation in Spain on a boat, decides to take a swim in the water. When he returns, he finds his family is missing and his boat is bloody.
As he begins to look for his family, he uncovers a treasure trove of family secrets and a government conspiracy that have to do with his father (Bruce Willis), a briefcase and a mysterious woman played by Sigourney Weaver.

Despite how the trailer for "The Cold Light of Day" starts, the movie isn't actually about Bruce Willis and Henry Cavill as a supportive father-son team, who enjoy a nice family vacation, yachting around the world and having a good old time.
Turns out that daddy was in the CIA, and he didn't tell his family, including his son, until it was too late.
Check out the "Cold Light of Day" trailer after the jump!
"The Cold Light of Day" follows Cavill's character as he fights his way through Spain to fix the mess his father left for him and to save his family from their captors.
The trailer offers a cool look at Cavill's action chops in a pre-"Man of Steel" movie. There's even a scene of him leaping building to building. It's not quite leaping tall buildings in a single bound, but 2013 is a long ways away.

Bruce Willis is currenlty in negotiations to join the cast of Paramount’s G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation. THR reports that Willis would play "General Joe Colton, the man who in 1980s comic books starts the G.I. Joe strike team, called the ultimate freedom fighting force, and got the handle G.I. Joe."
The sequel is being directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. If cast, Willis would join Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson and RZA in the action film. Filming is slated to begin in New Orleans this month to meet the scheduled June 29, 2012 release date.
Willis will next be seen opposite Henry Cavill in the thriller, Cold Light of Day. He will also be seen in Rian Johnson's Looper.I think that Willis would be an awesome addition to the cast. I am starting to get excited for this film now.

A couple of key release dates have been locked this week. Summit Entertainment will open the Amanda Seyfried mystery thriller "Gone" on February 24th 2012.
Jennifer Carpenter and Sebastian Stan also star in the film about a young woman (Seyfried) who is convinced the serial killer who kidnapped her two years before has come back and taken her sister.
The company has also locked an April 6th 2012 release for "Cold Light of Day" starring future Superman Henry Cavill.
Cavill plays a man whose family is kidnapped while on vacation in Spain and as he sets out to rescue them, he uncovers a government conspiracy and long buried family secrets.
Finally, Lionsgate will release the Jason Statham action thriller "Safe" on October 28th 2011.
One film however has now lost its date, Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia" which Magnolia had planned to open November 4th this year but has now pulled from the schedule for the moment.

After months of rumors and speculation, the role of Clark Kent/Superman has finally been cast. Henry Cavill (Immortals, Cold Light of Day) has been announced (via Collider) as our new actor to portray Superman. Cavill is somewhat unknown when you compare him to actors like Christian Bale and Ryan Reynolds, but does seem to have the physical look that would fit the Man of Steel. Many may not think he could pull-off the nerdy look from Donner’s films, but Snyder’s reboot is said to put a new take on the character that would deviate from that persona.
