Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

Baby-thwapers. Bukkake. Bratislava. Those aren't the three B's that The Office made famous; those are the three B's of Sander Maran's Estonian musical horror comedy Chainsaws Were Singing. The movie plays like a Mad Libs slasher satire of slasher by way of parody musicals, caught somewhere between Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Cannibal: The Musical and Troma's Poultrygeist (or any of the studio's earlier super-gory song-and-dance flicks). It's unapologetically low-budget, confidently goopy, and a ceremoniously silly take on "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets Dead & Breakfast." I'd say it can potentially be the next Hundreds of Beavers — an absurd smash-hit indie from out of nowhere — but some pacing issues prevent the film from achieving bulletproof greatness.

Close on the heels of his performances in the slasher Scream VI and the hit romantic comedy Anyone but You, Dermot Mulroney has just wrapped production on a new horror thriller called Dead and Breakfast. This one is coming our way from the Las Vegas-based production companies Beno Films and Al Bravo Films, but filming took place in Little Rock, Arkansas. Deadline got their hands on a pair of first-look images from Dead and Breakfast, and you can check those out in this article.
Written and directed by Loppo Jp Martinez, Dead and Breakfast follows five petty criminals who rob a pawn shop in Kansas City. Still, on their drive back to Little Rock, an unexpected engine failure forces them to stay in a bed & breakfast in the middle of nowhere where their plan quickly derails into a bloodbath. So no, in case you were wondering, this Dead and Breakfast[/link]...

By this point, creator Ryan Murphy has enough content to fill a shared universe. So it would make sense if his latest creation, “American Horror Stories,” wanted to be firmly placed in the “Ryan Murphy-verse” — using one-off episodes to establish extras space where preexisting characters and themes from old seasons of “American Horror Story” could stretch out. But having watched the series for three consecutive weeks now, that’s not exactly what the FX on Hulu show is aiming for, and I’m no closer to telling you who this show is made for or what message it’s hoping to impart.
The show’s official synopsis states it’s “an anthology series of stand-alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends, and lore,” but in three episodes (four if you include the two-part pilot as separate entities) it’s unclear what legends, myths, or lore we’re drawing from outside of Murphy’s universe.

Dead and Breakfast is a new novella from author horror Gary Buller, who creates a classic 80s feel in this original old school horror anthology – says Buller: “Dead and Breakfast’ as a novella length horror anthology in the same mould as ‘Creepshow’ and ‘Tales from the Crypt’. Four short stories with a wraparound story that ties them together”
When Eddie gets a flat in the middle of nowhere, the last thing on his mind is death. Then as darkness falls and the storm worsens, he’s forced to seek shelter alongside his significant other, Banksy. Big mistake. Bed and Breakfast, the sign said, but there are no eggs and bacon on the menu here. Instead, their host serves up four tales of terror with a little murder on the side. And as the other residents of the mansion gradually reveal themselves, Eddie and Banksy begin to wonder if they’ll ever check out alive.

Olivier Afonso’s Girls With Balls doesn’t atone for the leery “females vs. males” horror normalization of exploitations past, but it is a slaughter-tastic midnight movie about volleyball vixens defending themselves from backwoods killers. Expect gallons of juicy redness, slack-jawed Deliverance imposters, and a campfire’s smokestack of slasher fun. Any fans of Dead & Breakfast out […]

You've never had it so horrific. By some unholy alignment of the spheres and schedules, Halloween film events burst out across the nation this week like ravenous maggots from a rotting corpse. This year, as an added gruesome treat, the usual seasonal events are made a little bit darker by the looming shadow of the BFI's ongoing Gothic season, which hosts several horror screenings and special events across the country.
Elsewhere there are some brilliant, atmospheric and alternative locations on offer for horror fans to be scared in, and one of the gloomiest settings in the land must surely be the ruined Kirkstall Abbey, on the outskirts of Leeds city centre, a genuinely gothic (and genuinely chilling; you'll need to bring a warm jacket...

Horror-comedies are a mixed bag. Often they’re not scary or violent enough to satisfy your horror boner, nor are they funny enough to tickle your funny bone(r). When they work well, you get an Evil Dead II or a Dead and Breakfast. When they fail you get…I don’t know, who remembers shitty horror-comedies? Tucker & Dale vs. Evil follows two lovable, well meaning rednecks through a series of misunderstandings that result in a group of vacationing college kids being convinced the duo are out to murder them. Like any educated group, the kids decide the best thing to do is to take the war to the hillbillies and try to kill them and rescue their “kidnapped” friend. Things go comically and fatally awry to great effect. Kills Things don’t go so well for the non-hillbillies and a full dozen kids find themselves on the wrong end of pointy objects. Ills...

Dane Cook is not cracking jokes in his new ensemble drama, Answers To Nothing. In this clip from the movie, the stand-up comedian gets serious on his mother played by Barbara Hershey.
Best known for his successul "Tourgasm" shows and comedies like Good Luck Chuck, Dane Cook takes the indie route to flex his dramatic acting chops in Answers To Nothing.
Indie director Matthew Leutwyler (Dead and Breakfast, The River Why) brings us a Crash-like story of interweaving stories set in Los Angeles. Dane Cook plays Ryan an unhappy husband to Elizabeth Mitchell's Kate ((“Lost,” “V”). Each of the characters in Answers To Nothing are connected by coincidence, geography or choice and finds themselves faced with a decision that will radically change the course of their lives—and the lives of others—often in ways they least

There's so much good horror being made these days, it's scary, but if you're terrified of missing out, Halloween is the time to catch up. In the week long build-up to next Saturday, cinemas are serving up a putrefying, maggot-infested smorgasbord of filmic fear – should you tire of pumpkin carving.
Rising to the occasion, the BFI has rolled out the black carpet and reanimated the corpse of Alice Cooper for a special horror evening (BFI Southbank, SE1, Fri, bfi.org.uk). The cadaverous rocker interrupts his tour to give an annotated talk on the "Nightmare Movies" that have mis-shaped his life, music and make-up strategy, including Nightmare On Elm Street (Cooper played Freddy Krueger's daddy), Vincent Price (did voiceovers for his album), and Tim Burton (Cooper's in his next movie). Old skull-face also holds a Q&A and introduces John Carpenter's Halloween. Another atmospheric one-off (alright, two-off) is the Jameson Cult Film Club,...

Why do all comedians want to be dramatic actors? Does drama pay better than comedy? Is getting an Oscar that insanely awesome? Does working the comedy club circuit make you so dead inside that you become incapable of feeling or even portraying human joy? Whatever the reason, Dane Cook has been far too successful a comedian not to try his hand at dramatic acting. And here comes that try: "Answers to Nothing" from "Dead and Breakfast" director Matthew Leutwyler. The trailer:
I know the title and all, but I hope the movie has answers to something, because the trailer left me with a lot of questions, namely what exactly this movie is about besides Cook's crossover to quote-unquote "real" acting, which actually looks promising. The answer (to nothing) follows, courtesy the official plot synopsis from the trailer's press release:

I don’t know about other interviewers and whether they have a favorite interviewee, but mine, hands down, is Michael Rooker. The guy is the total package: hilarious, serious about his craft, a goofball at times, but always willing to talk about his latest or upcoming projects. And he’s just Such a nice guy!
So, when "The Walking Dead" started, I knew I had to interview him for that as his character quickly became a fan favorite. Then, I got the bonus of discussing Rooker’s directorial debut, also in the horror genre, Pennhurst. The interview that follows took over two hours to conduct and a few extra days of back and forth to clean things up, but it was one of the most hilarious interviews I’ve done in quite a while.
Read on for Part One, focusing on "The Walking Dead", and look for Part Two, all about Pennhurst,...

It's that time of year when the vaults are prised open, the cinematic nightmares of the world are unleashed, and movie houses across the land compete to present the scariest horror-themed festival with the corniest name. Halloween festivals have been steadily multiplying, like marauding zombies or Tesco Metros, so here's a handy breakdown …

The other hot all-nighter tickets are the Electric's Vintage 80s Horror All-Nighter (31 Oct, Electric Cinema, W11) which has The Thing, Evil Dead II, Re-Animator and Poltergeist, washed down with Michael Jackson's Thriller. The BFI IMAX Scary 3D Halloween all-nighter (30 Oct, BFI IMAX,...
