December 2010 - Hal MacDermot
The depths of December and a frozen wood in the heart of the English countryside; acrid smoke drifts through the bare trees… could you dream of a better place to watch a running battle between a small band of military survivors and a horde of blood thirsty zombies?
The original Zombie Diaries was shot in a video diary style and told the interweaving stories of three groups of people in the immediate aftermath of a zombie virus apocalypse. It’s a great movie and was shot for zero budget. This time, with the help of producer Rob Weston (and those Weinstein chaps) there is more money and there are more zombies.
The film makers, however, have stayed true to their original guerrilla spirit, witness the fact that they recruited their zombie extras via Facebook, and also through an open casting call broadcast on local BBC TV news.

Disclaimer: These films are in no particular order and aren't all films I like. I wrote this post to be a companion piece to Kurt Halfyard's wonderful Brave New Worldview – 30 Science Fiction Films of the 21st Century posted over at Row Three, so read this and then piece it together with his and we think you'll have a pretty comprehensive list of important genre stuff from the new millennium to catch up with.
Here's the thing; we love the post apocalypse around here. No foolin'. For those of you just tuning in, Quiet Earth started life as a site dedicated to the genre. And while we cover the whole gamut of weird and wonderful genre film from around the globe now, we still like to think of ourselves as the go-to-guys on the subject. From Panic in the Year Zero, to Planet of the Apes, to The Postman, we've seen...

Nope this isn't a short about a boxing day apocalypse... Day 26 (or "Tag 26" in its native Germany) is a stellar post-apocalyptic short from 2003 by Andreas Samland. Inspired by Tarkovskij´s Stalker the film is shows how two survivors of a biological disaster are able to subsist when their bodies aren't able to come in contact with the world. It's a pretty scary vision, and one wonders if it's any way to really live at all. Certainly a good viewing if you're looking to feel thankful for the simple things this holiday season.
Samland certainly favors realism over the usual Pa fantasy, which is probably why our friend, director Michael Bartlett, told us that in his "humble opinion, it is the greatest short film ever made." Bartlett even interviewed Samland on Making the Film back when the film was being made so be sure to check that out if you...
