A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
As the town takes off for the holidays and comes to a virtual standstill, the Oscar race roars on as eagle-eyed pundits continue to fanatically parse yesterday’s release of the shortlist in 10 categories (3 of them shorts) that could, I said could, give clues as to the ways the Oscar winds are blowing towards the start of nomination voting on January 11.
Meanwhile, the level of Q&As, talk show appearances, various honors announcements coming almost daily from the Palm Springs and Santa Barbara Film Festival, nominations from Golden Globes and Critics Choice, plus invites to parties have kept us hopping ever since the SAG strike ended and actors could once again do what they do best – talk about themselves. It’s been eight years since Ludacris released his last solo album, and while he’s dropped some singles and features since then, the rapper appears ready to make a full return to music next year.
In a new interview with BET, Luda said, “Some music projects will be coming out” in 2024, though he declined to say what form they would take. “I don’t wanna fake, I don’t wanna stutter-step. I don’t wanna be like [André] 3000 and say, I got an album coming out. I don’t know.

One of the biggest surprises and most joyous moments of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was when Jack Black‘s villainous Bowser took to the piano and roared out the power ballad “Peaches.” The song was the funniest ballad we’d ever seen…. until “Barbie” came out.” That movie featured Ryan Gosling‘s Ken singing the tune “I’m Just Ken,” backed up by a bunch of other Kens including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
It’s strange, curious, and fantastic that two films have been released this year that feature hilarious ballads as key moments in their films for their story’s villains. As such, we expect both songs to compete for Best Original Song this year purely for their sheer popularity. Our odds chart for this category isn’t yet up, however. For now, we’re just focusing on the chances of these two songs only.

A generation of kids who grew up playing “Super Mario Bros.” on the Nes in the 1980s are now adults in their 40s, and they’re just as responsible as the kids of today for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” earning one of the biggest box office launches ever seen from an animated film.

Domestically, the three-day opening of $143 million has topped post-shutdown films like “The Batman” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and is second only to “Incredibles 2” ($182 million in June 2018) on the all-time animation opening weekend list. Is “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” one of the first Oscars original song contenders of the year?
The ultimate power ballad, sung by Jack Black as the evil Bowser, will be eligible to submit for best original song consideration at the Oscars, Universal has confirmed to Variety.
“Peaches” is all about Bowser’s unrequited love. And the subject of his adoration? Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor Joy), who is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. The song is co-written by Black, the film’s directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, as well as Eric Osmond and John Spiker.
In the movie, Bowser is sitting at his piano belting out the ballad. He sings, “Peach, you’re so cool And with my star we’re gonna rule. Peach, understand, I’m gonna love you ’til the very end. Princess Peach, at the end of the line, I’ll make you mine.

Perhaps Jack Black enjoyed Pedro Pascal playing Mario in an SNL skit as much as we did, because the Bowser actor thinks Pascal would be a great pick to voice the plumber’s archnemesis Wario in a possible sequel to The Super Marios Bros. Movie.
While speaking to GameSpot about returning as Bowser for the follow-up to the animated movie, Black considered the possibility of pulling “a Fast & Furious” and turning babyface. “You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain?” Black said. “Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”
However, Black was sure to caution that “it’s not a given” his character will return, saying, “You know, I did a few Kung Fu Panda movies,...

Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own” series only just launched, but the show’s creators are already hard at work on a potential second season.
“We’re here with you taking a break from working on Season 2 of the show,” series co-creator Will Graham told TheWrap in a recent interview. “There definitely is a lot more to this story.”
The first season, out on Prime Video now, sees Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson), Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden), Jo De Luca (Melanie Field) and more gather at tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, eventually settling on the story of the Rockford Peaches. Within the Illinois-based team are stories of all kinds of women, but one storyline falls outside the Aagpbl with Max Chapman (Chanté Adams), who carves her own niche in baseball later on in the show. Season 1 ends with some physical and literal twists, but the story is far from over.

Director Craig Monahan.s first film in 10 years is an intelligent and satisfying drama.
That.s according to the first reviews for Healing, which is screening at the European Film Market in Berlin.
Don Hany, Hugo Weaving, Xavier Samuel and Anthony Hayes star in the film scripted by Monahan (who last directed Peaches in 2004) and Alison Nisselle, inspired by a real-life alliance between the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary and Prisons Victoria.
.A group of conflicted men, prisoners and inmates discover the majesty of great birds . and through them, the cleansing power of redemption . in the deeply felt outdoor drama Healing,. said Variety's Eddie Cockrell.
.The first film in a decade from director and co-writer Craig Monahan, whose 1998 psychological thriller The Interview remains an uncommonly smart genre piece, this equally intelligent and satisfying item will prove therapeutic to distribs on the hunt for quality fare..

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
Then there was The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers' sublime comedy that has since become a deserved and oft-quoted cult favourite.

Why is it that Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Obama and Adele get all the love, while Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Peaches Geldof get it in the neck?
As the dust begins to settle on awards season, it becomes clear that some famous women get a lot more love than others. Rightly or wrongly, there are those whom everyone wants to make their instant best friend, and those who get it in the neck. Why is Adele so robustly likable, while the equally successful Taylor Swift often comes across like a wounded deer? Why would so many of us run into the nearest pub to neck shots with Jennifer Lawrence, and leave Anne Hathaway waiting in the car? Using deeply scientific methodology, we've uncovered the reasons behind this puzzling phenomenon.

Hugo Weaving is re-teaming with his "The Interview" and "Peaches" director Craig Monahan on the prison feature "Healing" at Point Blank Pictures and Pinnacle Films.
The story centers on real-life prison inmate Viktor Khadem’s (Don Hany) last eighteen months before release after serving a sixteen-year term.
Khadem is sent to Won Wron, a low-security, pre-release prison farm, where Senior Officer Matt Perry (Weaving) has established a unique program to rehabilitate broken men by giving them the responsibility for the rehabilitation of injured game birds, such as eagles, falcons and owls.
Xavier Samuel, Jane Menelaus, Anthony Hayes, Mark Leonard Winter, Robert Taylor, Justine Clarke, Laura Brent and Tony Martin also star.
Monahan and Alison Niselle co-wrote the screenplay, and filming begins in Melbourne and around regional Victoria next week ahead of an early 2014 release.

I'm glad Hugo Weaving hasn't been stuck with just villain roles since The Matrix. It happens a lot to actors that have played superb villains but just like the best (Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken) Hugo Weaving has shown he's more than capable of playing a variety of roles. THR has news that he will be using some of that range for the film Healing that is being directed by fellow Australian Craig Monahan. The two have worked together before in Peaches and The Interview. The movie also stars...

With a terrific cast led by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks is one of the most promising high-profile films currently in production.
Due for release in the height of the awards season next year, Hanks stars as Walt Disney in the drama that tells the tale of how author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) was pursued by Disney for the rights to her novel, Mary Poppins, and now the first look at the pair filming on the grounds of Disneyland have surfaced online.
“When Travers travels from London to Hollywood in 1961 to finally discuss Disney’s desire to bring her beloved character to the motion picture screen (a quest he began in the 1940s as a promise to his two daughters), Disney meets a prim, uncompromising sexagenarian not only suspect of the impresario’s concept for the film, but a woman struggling with her own past. During her stay in California,...

SYDNEY -- Leading independent distributor Hopscotch revealed its 2005 lineup Thursday, a slate hailed by co-owner Troy Lum as festival-lauded and director-driven. Set for release are Murderball, about wheelchair rugby players; Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin; Wong Kar Wei's 2046; German smash hit Der Untergang (The Downfall); and Kim Ki-Duk's Bin-jip (3-Iron). In addition, Hopscotch will handle an Australian film, Craig Monahan's Peaches, starring Hugo Weaving, Jacqueline McKenzie and newcomer Emma Lung. Hopscotch, shared by partners Lum, Sandie Don and Frank Cox, almost doubled its first year boxoffice takings in 2003 of AUS$13 million to AUS$22 million ($17 million) in 2004. Successful releases in 2003-04 included Fahrenheit 9/11, Goodbye Lenin!, Nowhere in Africa, Somersault, Spellbound and Touching the Void.
SYDNEY -- Writer-director Cate Shortland's script for Somersault took home the honors for best feature film (original) at the Australian Writers' Guild AWGIE Awards for excellence in writing. Somersault, a rites of passage story starring Abbie Cornish, on Friday beat other nominees The Finished People by Khoa Do and Peaches by Sue Smith. The AWGIEs are controversial and in years past have failed to nominate more than one film in the category on the basis that the screenplays that year were not up to scratch. According to AWG vp Mark Poole, "excellence in writing" referred to scripts that advanced the craft of writing and took a fresh approach to the subject material.
