Review Caroline Preece 3 Jul 2013 - 14:55
Answers are forthcoming in this week's instalment of Pretty Little Liars. Here's Caroline's review of Face Time...
This review contains spoilers.
4.4 Face Time
Phew! Any episode with Melissa Hastings actually present in Rosewood is always going to be answers-packed, but this week took the biscuit. Spencer finally has the sense to use some of her A tricks to lure answers out of her sister, and it works! We may not have received the big answers we were after (let’s cut the writers some slack on that one – we’re only in week four) but the heated confrontation between Melissa and Spencer was certainly informative in other ways. What did we learn?
When confronted with the mask the Liars found last week, Melissa heads straight to Hector’s workshop, buys up every copy of her face mould and proceeds to smash them all. She...

All three of our Pretty Little Liars Round Table participants this week agreed: "Cat's Cradle" could have used a bit more excitement to speed things along.
But we still managed to chat it out and would love to hear your take on what we put on this weekly table. So join staff writers Nick McHatton, Leigh Raines and myself by pulling up a virtual chair and sharing in the conversation below...
-------------------------------------------
Caleb's return: Sizzle or fizzle?
Nick: I like that he's jumping right back in, but I also got a bit of a forced vibe, as if Caleb and Hannah were merely going through the motions.
Leigh: Sizzle! Caleb always equals sizzle. He will also do anything for Hanna and even her shady mama. I love his loyalty.
Carissa: I agree with both Nick and Leigh. While I love that Caleb will do anything for his Hanna, she just...

Caroline recaps the action in this week's sluggish instalment of Pretty Little Liars...
This review contains spoilers.
4.3 Cat's Cradle
We’re getting into the sluggish, slightly uneventful stage of Pretty Little Liars that occurs every season and, for those obsessed fans who keep up with the clues and hints throughout, episodes like Cat’s Cradle are always a slight disappointment. The good news is that there seems to be a reunion going down in Rosewood, with parents actually parenting and boyfriends doing the stand-up thing but, with absolutely everyone acting shady so close to home, we know the familial unity can’t last.
First up is Ella, who hasn’t been seen since around half-way through season three. It’s just a fly-in visit, however, as her boyfriend asks her to go with him to Austria for “less than a year.” She obviously didn...

"Cat's Cradle" was one boring episode of Pretty Little Liars.
I’m usually on the edge of my seat, but aside from a few smaller moments and interesting turns in dialogue, not much was worthwhile in this installment.
Caleb made his first appearance on Pretty Little Liars Season 4 and wasted no time getting back into the A fray. He really has no fear about getting his hands dirty as he pestered Mr. Marin to make sure that Hannah and Ashley have legal counsel, but later learned that Mr. Marin’s gun is missing after a cash visit from Ashley. Couple that with Ashley’s sorry excuses with Hannah and Ashley is looking pretty guilty.
But this is Pll, I’m not convinced Ashley is the one who ultimately killed Wilden. It’s far too neat; Ashley’s phone, shoes and alibi are far too nice and tidy. A’s text to Aria: “Cleaning up Rosewood,...

Pretty Little Liars did not deliver the most compelling hour of television with last week's "Turn of the Shoe."
But the episode did set up a number of conflicts for the rest of Season 4, starting with Hanna wondering about her mother's secrets and why she's been lying for so long. Watch mother confront daughter in this clip from tomorrow night's "Cat's Cradle."
Pretty Little Liars Clip: Hanna v. Ashley
Elsewhere, a clue in Ali's things will lead the girls to a very creepy mask maker (as if any other kind could exist on this show, right?), as teased in the following sneak peek:
Pretty Little Liars Clip: In Search of an Answer
And, finally, Spencer will confront her sister with a few questions and suspicions. Does Melissa know more than she's letting on? Watch now and return to TV Fanatic tomorrow for a detailed review of the latest Pretty Little Liars...

Things are getting even weirder than usual in Rosewood in episode three of Pretty Little Liars' fourth season. Titled "Cat's Cradle" and airing Tuesday, June 25th (8:00 - 9:00 Pm Et/Pt) the episode sees one of A's targets hitting close to home, while the girls follow up on a lead from Ali's belongings that takes them to a strange destination. What do you think is going on? Frankly I have no clue, but masks really freak me out.

Something is rotten (and glitter-filled and glowing and dancing) in the state of Denmark. Hot off The Great Gatsby, director Baz Luhrmann has his sights set on Hamlet. Hamlet-Hamlet. Actual Hamlet! "Gatsby is the American Hamlet," Luhrmann tells THR. "What else could we possibly do as a follow-up?" Yes, he'd want Leonardo DiCaprio, but no, the idea isn't anything other than a vague dream at this point. After Hamlet, Gatsby, and Romeo + Juliet, maybe Luhrmann could tackle all of the other required reading from high school: Baz Luhrmann's The Bluest Eye, perhaps. Or Baz Luhrmann's Cat's Cradle? Of Mice and Men? A collection of Flannery O'Connor stories? We're just throwing out possibilities here.

I love Paul Driessen. Very long ago (1977!) when I was head of acquisitions and international sales for the Santa Monica based short film distributor Pyramid Films, we had Paul Driessen's wonderful short animation, The Killing of an Egg (02'50 / Holland 1977). We sold it to businesses who were holding meetings for inspiring sales, bolstering morale, to schools and libraries. It became one of our best selling shorts. In 2000 he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Short 3 Misses.
And now the Dragon of Dragons Award, the award for life achievement granted annually by the 53rd Krakow Film Festival to be held May 26 to June 2, 2013, goes to the Dutch-Canadian animator Paul Driessen.
The Krakow Film Festival is one of the oldest film events dedicated to documentary, animated and short fiction films in Europe. Among previous winners there are such well-known artists as Kazimierz Karabasz, Allan King, Albert Maysles, Werner Herzog, Stephen and Timothy Quay, Raoul Servais, Jerzy Kucia and Jonas Mekas. Last year, for the first time a woman - Helena Trestíková, the author of the famous documentary Rene, become a laureate.
Paul Driessen was born in 1940, in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. He drew cartoons from an early age, in 1964 he graduated from the Art Academy in Utrecht and was offered a job as an animator at a commercial animation film & TV studio in Hilversum, near Amsterdam. In 1967 he was invited by George Dunning to work on his Beatles’ story “The Yellow Submarine”, which now is considered a forerunner for modern intertextual animations for adults like “Shrek”, “Futurama”, “South Park” or “The Simpsons”.
In 1970 Paul Driessen emigrated to Canada and started a freelance animation career, working mainly for the National Film Board of Canada. Since 1976 he also animated and directed many of his films for independent producers in The Netherlands. Driessen's unique style can be easily recognised by the incessantly wobbling lines and smooth movements of his characters. As a narrator he often uses split screen technique, while keeping the story integrated.
In the 1980s Driessen started teaching animation at the University of Kassel, Germany, after Jan Lenica. He continued till 2005 and under his guidance two of his student's films, "Balance" (1989) by Christoph and Wolfgang Lauenstein, and “Quest” (1996) by Tyron Montgomery and Thomas Stellmach, won Academy Awards.
Paul Driessen has won over 50 international awards for his work. He was honored with life achievement awards at the animated film festivals in Ottawa (1984) and Zagreb (2002), in 1987 Asifa Hollywood presented the Annie Award to him for "his distinguished contribution to the art of animation". In 2005 he was given the Special Golden Dinosaur Award at the Etiuda & Anima Film Festival in Krakow. In 2000 his short film, interlocking three tales of damsels in distress, “3 Misses” earned him an Oscar nomination.
Lately he wrote and illustrated a couple of books - “The Fiddle Fumble Stories” series, typical of the style which characterizes the rest of his work. Paul Driessen is currently working on a new animated short, a coproduction between Canada and The Netherlands.

Yeah, it's not "jumping off the page" interesting but it's something to tide you guys until we get some really good stuff. I hate it when the chaperones dance with the kids
The second outing of this season of All Stars was ... terrible. "Designers must create disco-wear for a glamorous night out inspired by Nine West's '70s Brights shoe collection." Disco-wear? Fabulous. I've been waiting for this challenge forever. But instead of conjuring images of moon and spoons, sweaty dress shields, hand jobs in the corner, and that one prom night when a madman tried to kill Jamie Lee Curtis on the dancefloor, this Disco disaster was more like, well, a Lifetime version of Disco.
There was one brief moment when I was taken back to my wee years back in the seventies. Casanova's design instantly transported me to that decade. Then I realized why. It had nothing to do with disco ... it was my sister and I playing Cat's Cradle for hours on end.
So how did each designer do?...

Yesterday we posted a new song by the gauzy Baltimore duo Beach House, which we speculated was a harbinger of a new record. Today comes official confirmation: Beach House will release its fourth studio album, Bloom, May 15. It was recorded late last year and is the follow-up to the group's most successful LP to date, 2010's Teen Dream. Beach House will also be hitting the road in May, touring the U.S. and and Europe. Last night, Okkervil River headlined a sold-out concert at the Cat's Cradle, the long-time and legendary North Carolina stopover between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The Cat's Cradle holds just more than 500 people, meaning that any two of the three bands on Wednesday night's bill--Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus and Future Islands, combining for one of the summer's biggest indie tours--could have sold out the show just fine. The Cradle appearance was the second of the month-long tour, and excitement was high. After all, Future Islands are a Baltimore band, but they're actually kids from nearby Raleigh. What's more, neighboring Durham was one of the first towns outside of New England to fall for Titus Andronicus, back before a big record deal and Pitchfork laurels. This was the kind of show, then, where tickets were sold in parking lots, where long-faced indie kids stood close to the entrance in hopes of someone having a spare.

For his work in Teenage Fanclub, Scotland's Norman Blake is an indie rock icon. The same goes for Welsh songwriter Euros Childs, the former leader of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. But the legacies they've built during the last two decades apparently don't satisfy the artistic drives that made them musicians in the first place; Jonny, their casual duo affair the two convened in order to write enough songs for a self-made single, recently released its self-titled debut through Merge Records. Full of inescapable melodies, humor and elliptical lyrics, Jonny is a 40-minute spree meant for a spring drive and, at times, the dance party you find at the end of it.
Download the new single, "You Was Me," here, and watch the nature-day video above. We spoke with Blake in Japan just before the start of Jonny's first tour there and after a 36-hour whirlwind of travel for two Teenage Fanclub shows in Brazil.

In celebration of the final season of "Lost" premiering Tuesday, Feb. 2 on ABC, iTunes has launched character playlists.
We're curious as whether or not you guys think these lists fit the characters. We happen to think Kate's fits the best, plus it's also our personal favorite list of songs. We also would've included "Born to Run" for her.
Kate's Tracks: Lost Ep: A fugitive on the run, the strong-willed Kate Austen has a tumultuous past.
1. "Cherry Bomb" (The Runaways)
2. "Crazy" (Patsy Cline)
3. "Jack of All Parades" (Elvis Costello)
4. "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (Rod Stewart)
5. "Another Nail in My Heart" (Squeeze)
6. "Bad Medicine" (Bon Jovi)
7. "Somebody I Used to Know" (Elliot Smith)
Sawyer's Tracks: Lost Ep: Con man James "Sawyer" Ford at first was self-centered and disliked, but he becomes a trusted, courageous leader.
1. "Hair of the Dog" (Nazareth)
2. "Bad Moon Rising (Live)" (John Fogerty)
3. "You Got That Right" (Lynyrd Skynyrd...
