Over the Edge 1999 Thoughts

Over the Edge 1999 was 2nd annual Over the Edge PPV event produced by the WWF. It took place May 23, 1999 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. This event is infamous of the fatel in-ring death of Owen Hart who was scheduled to face the Godfather for the Intercontinental Championship. I won't get into every detail of this moment but this whole show had a lot of controversey due to the decision of Vince continuing to let the show go on. Many fans and critics have shown major heat to the WWF and Vince for the stunt and aftermath decision. Match card featured 6 matches.

The Good - Nothing much. Wrestlers post the incident did a good job maintaining focus of doing their job.

The Meh - Majority of the card was alright. The crowd did not seem to be full of energy due to what happened. It really obvious this crowd was stunned for majority of this show because of what was witnessed. JR & King didn't feel comfortable with their jobs this entire night but who could blame them? This lead to none of the matches feeling exciting aside from the main event which was okay.

The Bad - Road Dogg vs. Billy Gunn was the only lame match of the night. It was bland and the 2 didn't connect. Some teams don't have chemistry 1 on 1. Rock vs. Triple H ending in DQ did a number on it. However they had a better match 2 months later.

Overrall - A very hard PPV to watch. It's more likely harder for those who remembered it live. You could see many empty seats as the show continued and it was hardly watchable even from an edited view.

Score - 3 out of 10: Bad

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

1. X-Pac & Kane - D-Lo Brown & Sexual Chocolate: WWF Tag Team Championship - 2.5/5

2. Hardcore Holly vs. Al Snow: Hardcore Championship - 2.5/5

3. Jeff Jarrett & Debra vs. Val Venis & Nicole Bass - 2/5

4. Billy Gunn vs. Road Dogg - 1/5

5. Corporate Ministry vs. The Union (Elimination Tag) - 2/5

6. The Rock vs. Triple H: WWF Championship - 2/5

Best Match - X-Pac & Kane - D-Lo Brown & Sexual Chocolate

Worst Match - Billy Gunn vs. Road Dogg

Most Memorable Moment - Nothing

Top 5 Performers

1. Kane & X-Pac - Good Performance

2. D-Lo Brown & Sexual Chocolate - Good Performance

3. Hardcore Holly - Good Performance

4. Al Snow - Got Crowd Hot

5. Stone Cold - Loudest Pop and Over Big Face.

It Was Truly Vince McMahon's Fault
cerebral_assassin9215 June 2007
according to a article: In the early months of spring in 1999, Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart had been building a reputation as a strong tag team, with Debra as their manager. Management had planned the team to eventually split up, and Owen begin to lust after Debra, infuriating Jarrett, which would in turn plant the seeds for a bitter and very personal feud.

Owen, happily married in real life, didn't want his young children to see him cheating on his wife every Monday night, so he outright refused the angle. It was an honorable, if stubborn decision.

The result, was that Owen was saddled with the Blue Blazer gimmick. It was a persona he'd donned early in his career as a glorified jobber, and one he was forced to revisit. It was punishment for declining a well thought out angle, orchestrated to humiliate Owen, who has to don a superhero persona and spend much of his time mimicking the wrestlers in WCW.

Owen Hart had performed the stunt on two previous occasions in his career. Six months ago, Owen repelled from the ceiling at the 1998 Survivor Series in St. Louis. According to many, Vince McMahon was frustrated with how Owen's entrance came across on TV, as the "Blue Blazer" noticeably stalled and fumbled on the ground to break free of the contraption that had helped lower him. To the perfectionist in Vince McMahon, that simply wasn't good enough.

Bobby Talbert (the creator or the rig) specially bought a quick-release snap shackle for this occasion, allowing Owen Hart to easily break free once he had landed on the ground. Talbertt bought the equipment from a company called Amspec Inc., and all Owen would have to do is tug lightly on a release cord that would disengage the rappelling line from his harness. Upon landing, in one motion Owen would be able to break free and continue his superhero façade without any slip-ups. It was easy, at least that's how Talbert made it sound.

Bobby requested that Owen would rehearse the stunt, seeing as how the two had never worked together before. Owen declined. It was clear that he hated the stunt, and didn't want to do it for any more times than it was necessary. It is reported, that Owen tried to persuade management being lowered from the rafters wasn't essential to his character in the days leading up to the pay-per-view, only for Vince McMahon to insist otherwise As the backstage interview of the Blue Blazer was airing, Owen extended his elbows away from his body and tried to once again maneuverer his cape.

It was then that Owen accidentally triggered the quick-release. And it was then, that Owen fell 78 feet to his death, screaming all the way down, until he violently landed on his left side, shattering his left arm and causing fatal internal injuries, as the audience watched on in horror

A sad night for Wrestling
paudieconnolly7 May 2023
Over the edge kicks off like No Mercy before it WWF seems very focused on the Mcmahon family storyline. Which will become very interesting but at this point it feels to the detriment of other story lines. Going on around it. You can certainly skip the first half of this event nothing we haven't seen already before.

Of course tragedy that followers in the form of the blue blazer ( Owen Hart) falling from the rafters into the ring is what this event will always be remembered for and probably where night should've ended .

New age outlaws facing each other After the tragedy. The corporate ministry versus the union. And then of course triple H versus the rock and undertaker versus Steve Austin superstars that always deliver and shows the professionalism of them to still go out there, but this is a very poor events from the very beginning. But when you consider what happened on the night. What else could it be.

RIP Owen Hart.

The night wrestling changed
SteveDonnachie2002200119 November 2005
Ever since I was eight years old I have been a big wrestling fan. It didn't matter what federation I watched. WWE,WCW,USWA. To me the action is all I watched it for.

May 23rd 1999. That was my 19 birthday. I ordered Over the Edge and I was just expecting another pay per view. But this time. I was wrong. Instead that was the night one of the best wrestlers to come out of Canada a true human being fell to his death due to a stunt gone wrong. Not much you can do to change the situation. But what happened affter Owens death made me very mad.

Rather then ending the pay per view and doing the right thing as human beings the WWE decided to protect what comes first and that was the money by keeping the pay per view going as if Owens death never happened.

I gotta tell you. Vince Mchmaon has made some stupid decisions in his life but this was by far the stupidest decision he ever made.

And this crap with saying Owen would have wanted the pay pew view to keep going. Give me a break. When someone dies on a pay pew view its comon sense to stop it. Thats like a police officer shooting a robber or a mugger with a run and then just leaving the man to die so he can go home and call it a day as if the mans life never mattered.

But no matter what happens. Owen will be missed and thanks for the memories for all the times you gave us.

The show must go on???
sickthings8112 May 2003
The fact the entire card of that PPV took place that night makes me really feel bad about being a wrestling fan. The WWE stated in a press conference following the event that the reason they went on after Owen's fall is that this is what Owen would have wanted. Sure Owen would have wanted wrestling to go on but not right away. Excuse me but that is by far the WORST decision Vince Mcmahon ever tooked. Im so disgusted with the fact that they were only able to give 15mins, they annouced his death live and spend the following night at Raw all crying out loud on network television paying him a so-called Steve Austin drinking beer celebration. No matter what kind of entertainment you are offering even though you are live in front of the entire country, sometimes the show must be stopped.

A PPV Forever Ruined By Bad Decisions After Owen Hart's Death
jeremycrimsonfox5 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Taking place in Kanas City,WWF Over The Edge 1999 is considered one of the most controversial wrestling PPV shows ever. Starting with a Tag Team Championship match where X-Pac and Kane defends against the team of Mark Henry and D'Lo Brown (a good match that showed Mark and Kane's power and X-Pac's top rope moves), with Ivory as valet, the PPV started off good, with Hardcore Holly Vs. Al Snow for the WWF Hardcore Championship (because of the fight spilling out of the ring, and using stuff like a funnel cake for weapons) following the Tag Team match, tragedy would strike the next match, The WWF Intercontinental Championship match between The Godfather and Blue Blazer (Owen Hart), as the harness holding the Blue Blazer would give out and the wrestler would fall, suffering a fall that would eventually end his life (thankfully, for those watching at home, they were spared the horror the live audience saw as they saw a montage of Blue Blazer's past moments as well as interview that was done earlier in the night).

While the show was stopped for a good 15 minutes, the WWF decided to continue the show instead of postponing it (many sports leagues like Major League Baseball will postpone some games should a tragic accident like this happen to a later date), which is what caused this event to be negatively received, as well as his death not being officially announced until an hour after it restarted. From here, the wrestlers showed how somber they are in the ring (Jeff Jarret leaving the ring after his next match), and the main event where The Undertaker and Stone Cold Steve Austin fought for the WWF Championship was not worth it (as The Undertaker would win with help from Shane McMahon).

Because of what happened to Owen Hart, this would be the final PPV with the name Over The Edge (the following year, a new PPV called WWE Judgement Day would replace it) and the event would never be released on any home media (it would eventually see release on the WWF Network, but edited to remove mentions and scenes of the Blue Blazer and starting with a scene paying tribute to Owen), while also getting the promotion in a lawsuit from Owen's widow and family, who accused it of causing his death due to the harness being faulty. This is a pay-per-view that will forever be haunted and ruined by the death of a great man and a company's bad decision to continue the show after the incident happened.

Real Truth of Over The Edge PPV
benoit58 April 2008
not to long after Jeff Jarrett left the WWF for good he spoke of that night . Owen Hart and him where good friends and both 2nd generation wrestlers. Jeff first remarks "I was literally pushed thru the curtain as my lifeless friends body was wheeled past me " . Debra McMichael( Steve Austin's Ex wife as well as Steve Mondo McMichael Ex wife".)

As Owen Hart Fell, a video promo the ring was darkened, as a Blue Blazer (owen Hart Promo was played. The fall and video of owen in the ring was never showed on TV. There are a few news photos that got posted. When they came back from the video promo Jim ross was talking over a all we had was a crowd shot \., He stated that Owen Hart as The blue blazer has fallen and doesn't look good. Lawler then came back from the ring his face was ashen he told Jim that the situation was very critical paramedics where working hard to revive him. Rock And HHH where going there match in a private room when another Referee came in and told them Owen fell at first, knowing Owen Harts constantly being a prankster they thought it wasn't real. But both later stated that the look of the referee face said it all. In fact as he fell ,as mentioned in other post , he yelled for the referee and ring announcer to move.

Brother Bret hart was a plane heading to LA to do a angle on the Tonight Show , he couldn't get any of the plane phones to work, One of the captains got a message to call home something had happened. When he landed in La Eric bishoff was there told him what had happened, and put him on a charter flight to Kansas City to the morgue, Bret even later with Owens widow Martha went up to the top of the arena where Owen was standing. Police found no foul play formerly closed as a accident .

Most of the Information in Bret Harts book as well as the book by Martha Hart ,

God Bless you Owen
rossrobinson17 December 2004
I will never forget what happened to Owen, it was a shocking moment to what had happened to him. He will always be remembered by his fans, friends and family etc: In my opinion it must have been the shocking moment of 1999, the worlds shocking moment of that year. He was such a good wrestler and loved by his fans, friends and family. He will always be in the hearts of us and all we have left of him now, is the memories and the videos of what he was in to do with wrestling, I heard about the rumours about making a movie based on Owen Hart's life. And his wife gave the creators her permission to make the movie. I will always remember Owen the way her was and i hope that goes for the rest of you who were fans of him. God Bless you Owen, and thank you for the good times you gave us.

Owen Hart's Tragic Death
smw512200015 January 2006
I will never forget what happened to Owen Hart. I remember it like it was yesterday. Owen Hart was a great wrestler and performer and is and will be forever truly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. If it wasn't for the WWF forcing him to do that stunt that he did that cost him his life that sting used to do he would still be alive today. I miss Owen Hart so much and I wish that he was still alive but I know that he is in a better place now watching us. I hope that sting is happy knowing that it was one of his stunts that Owen Hart did that sting used to do that cost Owen Hart his life. Rest in peace Owen Hart and I hope to see you again in heaven someday.

Most people only remember Over the Edge for one thing. Owen's death. I can't give the show a fair rating. It wouldn't be fair too. So I'll just say that it was an interesting show. ONe no one will ever forget. Everything else no one remembers well. Here's to you Owen!

A horrible tragedy and a stupid decision.
holveck213 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I did not see the ppv my self but when i heard of the tragic passing of one of the greatest pure athletes and one of the WWE's top guys,Owen Hart i was shocked. I was young when it happened but i have been watching wrestling (WWE, WCW) for about 3 years and i knew a lot. I didn't really know much of the ppv besides Owen's death. When i got older i looked up the incident on Wikipedia had found out that they actually continued with the ppv as scheduled. I was appalled and angry. All of the things that Owen contributed to the business and especially WWE that was like a slap in the face to the Hart family. I don't know what could've been going through the head of billionaire Vince McMahon but he wasn't think straight. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt. I mean having a top performed or and superstar die during a live show can leave you hanging ideas. But when i think about it how can you possibly continue a ppv when that happens. The guy fell form the rafters and died. He was afraid of heights in the first place and didn't want to do the stupid stunt. I don't have much more to say but it was the worst possible tragedy for and type of sport to endure but that gives no excuse for the WWE or WWF as it was at the time to continue with ppv.

Why did it have to happen?
dlkell7926 August 2003
I remember it all like it was yesterday. Watching the PPV live at my friends' house. I saw Owen fall and thought to myself "Eh, it's just a publicity stunt." The next day, though, I saw it posted all over the news. Pretty sad I think. It is sad that Vince had to keep the show going knowing he lost one of his BEST wrestlers alive at that point in time. I believe that Owen would have been "The Game" instead of HHH today if he was still alive. He was and still is my favorite wrestlers of all times. Even though he stood in the shadows of older brother Bret, Owen was right up there as the best in the business. I think they should have postponed the rest of the PPV that night till either the next Sunday or even carded the rest of those matches until the next PPV. You will always be remembered in the hearts of all true wrestling fans around the world Owen. This ones for you! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
