Half A Movie

Haruyo Ichikawa is a troubled student at a girl's school who focuses on teacher Den Ohinata. He cares for her, but is uncertain about his true feelings. Naturally, there is plenty of gossip.

This is the first of four or so adaptations of Yôjirô Ishizaka's novel, and only the first half of it. Like many an important Japanese film in this era, it was released in two parts, and I have only seen the first part so far. The acting is professional, and judging from what I have seen, disaster looms.

Miss Ihikawa is not an actress I am familiar with. This is odd in that she appeared in more than 140 features, and not so odd in that she entered films as a child in 1926. By the time she made this, she was in her 20s, but still transitioning from juvenile roles. She would appear regularly through the mid-1950s and die in 2004 at the age of 91.
