Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the first season of “13 Reasons Why.”]
The teen drama “13 Reasons Why” sparked plenty of controversy when Netflix released it in March, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association saw fit to give it a nod on Monday. It’s a show that’s all but been forgotten and didn’t really show up on many critical prediction lists. Although the series overall didn’t get recognition, its star Katherine Langford snagged the nomination in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category.
“Words cannot express my sheer excitement and gratitude for being nominated by the HFPA this morning for portraying ‘Hannah Baker,’ a young woman whom I have come to truly love and understand,” Langford said in a statement. “Hannah’s story resonated with so many people, and I feel truly grateful to Netflix, Paramount TV, Brian Yorkey, Tom McCarthy, Selena Gomez, and all of our tremendous producers…and to our incredibly talented cast – who are also my dear friends,...

Mandy Moore knows how to give us all the feels on This Is Us, but she also knows how to get us feeling nostalgic with her Instagram. The former child star has a penchant for kicking it old school with her plethora of #tbt and #fbf posts on her Instagram account and we aren't the only one are feeling her too-cute throwback photos—her 1.4 million fans also dig 'em. Moore first caught the world's attention with sugary pop hit "Candy" in 1999 and then she charmed Hollywood with her roles in A Walk to Remember, How to Deal and Chasing Liberty. Over the past 18 years, the 33-year-old has grown from a teen pop princess and into a serious actress. From hanging out in the '90s with fellow...

Lee Daniels has some good news and some bad news. The good news is you have several new episodes of Empire to look forward to this year! The bad news? After December 2, the show isn't coming back until March 2016. How to deal with the break? Just use this time as an excuse to wear your own silk pantsuits and storm through every doorway you walk through. Throw a drink at the father of your children's face. Though we're still unpacking the full Sundance selection this year one of the first titles to jump out to our attention is Michael Madsen's The Visit. No, the director is not the guy from all those Tarantino films. Yes, he is very, very good at what he does. And what he's doing here is asking whether we on earth are prepared for an inevitable alien visitation. An alien encounter. A hypothetical visitor arrives from Outer Space. The authorities are immediately alerted - the military, defence and communication advisors, and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. How to deal with this unprecedented event? How to reassure Earth's inhabitants, who are prone to panic, when you have no previous experience to draw upon? This is absolutely fascinating...

Saturday Night Live this weekend featured Chris Rock as the host and musical guest Prince.
Cold Open
For the Cold Open, Saturday Night Live decided to tackle the topic of Ebola – specifically New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s (Bobby Moynihan) decision to impose a quarantine on nurse Kaci Hickox, who returned from Africa – and said nurse’s particularly cavalier behavior upon returning to Maine. “I don’t care if I have Ebloa," she says. "I’m riding my damn bike.”
Chris Rock Monologue
Chris Rock’s opening monologue started off with a controversial bit about the Boston Marathon. After noting how far 26 miles actually is, Rock said, “You finally get to the finish line, and somebody screams, ‘Run!,’” referring to the finish line bomb. As for the Freedom Tower that was erected following New York City’s 9/11 terrorist attack, Rock said it should be called the, “Never Going in There Tower,...

Stephen Colbert has made Papa Bear growl once again. Bill O'Reilly's "Factor Tip of the Day" segment on last night's installment of The O'Reilly Factor was called "How to Deal With Dumb People"—and, while he didn't use the words "Colbert" and "dumb" in the same sentence, he readily implied that the mock-homage-paying host of The Colbert Report is one of the intellectually challenged who just doesn't get it when it comes to the war on terror. Colbert apparently got O'Reilly's goat with his recent segment "Airstrikes on Terror: Syria's Business: Shove It Up Their Isil!" during which the outgoing...

Picking the right crowdfunding website is difficult. Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Seed & Spark all offer filmmakers and Web creators different avenues for reaching their fundraising goals. Which is the best? Filmmaker magazine has a ranking of the top sites and others you might not have considered. Equity Crowdfunding One Year Later: Only 534 of 3,361 companies hit their equity crowdfunding target in the first year year the practice was legal. Most were tech firms. Be careful what you offer supporters on Kickstarter: The crowdfund website has changed its terms of service, which now stipulate that the donor has entered into a "contract" with the creator. How to deal with an artistic crisis like a pro: “Imagine the emotional confusion that can build up inside a person after years of making random decisions while trying to advance a career," writes Corbett Barklie. Bottom line: be mindful, not random. Even Tom Ford is moving (back) to L.

How to approach this?
Hmmmm.
There was a leaked picture of a Visual Effects Bust used for reference on the green screen set for Josh Trank's reboot of The Fantastic Four, which didn't go to comic con and was pretty leak proof until this still made the rounds.
The still was of Ben Grimm in full The Thing mode, a character that will be inhabited by Jamie Bell in the film. After awhile of the still being out there, Trank tweeted it, confirming it was real, then the studio decided to start sending requests to pull it down.
How to deal with this delicately?
Just blurry colors. What's a Gif?
Hi Fox!

Anyway, The Fantastic Four seal has been broken with photos of Dr. Doom (Toby Kebbell from Rise of the Planet of the Apes) battling pre-cg The thing and The Human Torch coming in...

Allison Janney adds a touch of greatness to anything she’s in – Masters of Sex, The West Wing, the Mandy Moore classic How to Deal. So it’s no surprise that Janney shines in CBS sitcom Mom, created by Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky, and Gemma Baker.

Much of the show hinges on Bonnie and Christy’s tumultuous relationship, but the two get along rather nicely in last night’s season finale — probably because they have bigger problems to worry about,...

Jon Hamm has put away the sharp suits to play a Russian medic in A Young Doctor's Notebook with Daniel Radcliffe. Here he talks about moving on from Mad Men and his alter ego Don, whose inner life draws so much on Hamm's own past …
'I think we should all," Jon Hamm suggests, "get a chance to spend a week or two back in the shoes of our 24-year-old self…" Hamm, straight-jawed star of Mad Men, is talking in his rich bass voice about the premise of A Young Doctor's Notebook, an inspired adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's autobiographical tales of his apprenticeship as a doctor in rural Russia in 1916. In the drama, now entering its second series on Sky Arts, Hamm plays the middle-aged writer, looking back on the bleakly comic, steppe-back-in-time world of his youth, through the person of Daniel Radcliffe. The pair – the morphine-addicted 42-year-old dissident, and...

The Killing of America
Directed by Sheldon Renan
Written by Leonard Schrader and Chieko Schrader
USA, 1982
The Killing of America is an impassioned and emotional showcase of violence in America from the period of the early 1960s into the early 1980s. Resting on the thesis that the society quickly devolved into increasingly acts of senseless violence, the film utilizes rare and disturbing footage of both familiar and unfamiliar events. Rift with a somewhat confused ideology, the film nonetheless packs a punch and suggests where many others haven’t that access to guns are part of the problem, an issue that continues to be debated within American society to this day. Is this little more than a parade of greatest hits for snuff fans or does it reaches deeper, revealing darker truths and realities that we are unwilling or unable to face.

Filming starts in just a few days, and The CW's "Shelter" pilot, from "One Tree Hill" scribe Mark Schwahn and J.J. Abrams, has finally found its lead. Zap2it has learned that Christopher Marrone has been cast as series lead Mitch Taylor, a 23-year-old athlete who comes home for the summer hoping to reconnect with the girl he's been pining after all year.
Marrone's acting reel is below. "Shelter" will be his first television project; though he's got a couple of shorts and bit roles under his belt. Schwahn and Abrams have thus far assembled a cast of relative unknowns -- an interesting choice given that The CW has tended toward experienced talent in casting its other pilots.
That said, "Vampire Diaries" alum Trent Ford has also been cast in the pilot, as the short-tempered Tyler Green -- a past-his-peak rock star with a penchant for throwing appliances out of...

Mandy Moore has a four-for-four record of being awesome in guest-starring TV roles, so it makes sense that the adorable singer-turned-actress has gone and booked herself the lead role in a new ABC pilot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moore will co-star in "Us and Them," a comedy about "the inherent conflict that exists between the families you grow up in and the ones we make as adults." The 27-year-old will play Annie, a newlywed, and the show will be told from the perspective of Annie and her as-yet-uncast husband, Ben.
Writer Bob Fisher will co-executive produce alongside director Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum"), Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements (21 Laps/Adelstein), while Jon Leshay, who has worked with Moore as music supervisor on movies like "Saved," "How to Deal" and "A Walk to Remember," will produce.

The actress has just signed on to star in the single-camera ABC sitcom, Us and Them, her publicist confirmed Wednesday.

Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy is set to direct, while Wedding Crashers co-writer Bob Fischer is penning the project.

France is on financial brink. In fact, so is much of Europe. Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Iceland have all gone Third World. Racism and xenophobia are not only a fact of life throughout the continent, but they're frequently official government policy as well. How to deal with those humongous problems? Well, just go after a notorious filmmaker who made a stupid joke while chatting with reporters at a Cannes Film Festival press conference earlier this year. Back in Mid May, while plugging his latest effort, Melancholia, von Trier told reporters gathered at the film's press conference: I… I understand Hitler, but I think he did some wrong things, absolutely, but … but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end … No, I'm just saying that I think I understand the man. He’s not what you'd call a good guy, but I … but I understand much...

Bonne Fête Nationale! It's July 14 (or 14 July for you Euros), which means it's time to celebrate all things French.
And while some might choose to commemorate the 1789 storming of the Bastille with fancy wine and cheese spreads or by playing "La Marseillaise" on repeat, we'll be camping out in front of the tube with some of our favorite French TV characters.
You might be surprised to know that there aren't a whole lot of them, but we've come up with 10 who you shouldn't have a hard time tracking down if your francophone heart wants company.
Here they are, in their mostly fake-accented and cliche name glory:
Luc Laurent (Gilles Marini), "Brothers and Sisters"
Fans of the ABC family soap were probably sad to see the series canceled this year for many reasons -- but few give us more pause than the fact that we'll no longer see Gilles Marini in our home every week.

Shark Night 3D That entity known as the big old bad MPAA just pounded their gavel and handed in their verdict for an awful lot of horror films during the past week. I have to say I am mighty surprised at the rating that Shark Night 3D got. Didn't see that one coming what so ever. It's the first time I have truly been surprised by one of their ratings since they originally gave "How to Deal" an R rating for language. So take a peek for yourself to see what ratings the MPAA handed down. I discovered a few new titles just seeing this list myself.

Cliché: a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty, especially when at some time it was considered distinctively forceful or novel.
With Hollywood producing so many movies ever year, it is no surprise that they are often full of clichés. Jeff Smith created this montage under the Bottoms Up Productions label for acclaimed movie blog FilmDrunk.com, showing clips of some of the biggest movie clichés from a total of 102 films. The list of films are below the video. Enjoy!

If you’ve read the graphic novels of Dan Clowes, you already know the artist. The characters from such work as “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential,” which have both been turned into movies, are reflections of the 50-year-old and his close circle of introverted but creative friends. He describes them all, and himself, as having a seething anger that surfaces during some social situations but who are very likable once you get them to relax.

This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we do what Hollywood finds impossible by creating a successful reboot. The show is getting an upgrade (which is why you can hear both drilling and confetti being tossed constantly in the background), and the new format promises to make everyone who listens to the show three inches taller and wildly, wildly wealthy. As in, so wealthy you’ll have to figure out how to buy off politicians. You can check out the show guide below, but the quick and dirt version involves two beloved Rejects battling it out in a game of wits, a teenage director seeing her first SXSW premiere, a visual effects artist arguing on behalf of post-conversion 3D, and 5 myths about production that ensure movies will be crappy. Loosen up your tie and stay a while. Listen Here: Download This Episode On This Week’s Show: The Reject Radio Movie News Pop Quiz [0:00 - 17:30]:...

Demi’s dad hasn’t seen her in months, but he isn’t afraid to leap to his daughter’s defense and voice his concerns over the pressures from the entertainment industry!
Patrick Lovato was surprised to hear his daughter, Demi, had checked into a treatment center to battle her “emotional and physical issues”, but he claims he should have seen it coming.
“There are a lot of pressures. That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney,” Patrick said in an interview with RadarOnline.com.
Indeed, it would seem a combination of the pressures from Hollywood, an exhausting media tour for Camp Rock 2, and the stress of being on tour with ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas (and his new girlfriend Ashley Greene) just seemed too much for the 18-year-old Demi Lovato, despite having grown up with showbiz parents.

Plus, vote: Would you dye for Your man?
I was perusing through a few recent photos of Ashley Greene and it appears that the actress is sporting darker locks. That wouldn’t be news if you didn’t stop to think…didn’t Demi Lovato just go lighter recently? The common connection: Joe Jonas, of course. Demi goes lighter post-breakup, Ashley goes darker as they’re dating. Does Joe have a thing for darker-haired girls?
I mean, Camilla Belle? Brunette. Demi was a dark-haired brunette before they broke up. Now Ashley’s going darker. Do you think she did it for Joe? Would you dye your hair for a guy? I mean, we all know someone (or know of someone) who’s done this. Jessica Simpson reportedly went brunette to “feel smarter” when she was dating John Mayer. Would you change your hair color if the person you were involved with has a preference?...

Which vivacious vixen looked best in this fabulous frock?
Fashion powerhouse Rihanna is not afraid of bold outfit choices, so it’s no surprise she opted to wear this animal print Emilio Pucci number at boyfriend Matt Kemp’s birthday party! She paired the dress with her new red ‘do and a fierce pair of Jimmy Choos.
Four days later, Jada Pinkett Smith wore the exact same dress during Milan Fashion Week when she stepped out for the Diane Von Furstenberg Glamour party. Like RiRi, she kept the accessories simple, pairing the long-sleeve mini with some serious platform pumps and a black clutch.
Personally, I prefer Jada’s look — she absolutely looks so chic and it’s totally appropriate for Milan Fashion Week! Don’t get me wrong, Rihanna also looks fabulous but I just can’t get behind that hair! What do you guys think?!
