Big Madam ?
plesner9 June 2003
Elef lives in a society where everyone wakes up each morning with a new life, new house, new spouse, new kids, new job. Nothing is routine. Everything is controlled by a computer referred to as 'Madam Data'. One day he falls in love with Maya and wants to live with her - something quite impossible in such a society. From then on they try to find a way to break out of their society.

The movie has an interesting mixture of old things and scifi. It's as if it's an old scifi movie. The story is very different and quite good anyway. 8/10.

Great political science fiction

Warning: Spoilers
Based on a novel from 1980, See the Light of Day is a symbolically presented depiction of utopia: a society of complete equality, perpetual variety and family structures as different from ours as at all imaginable. The main characters who want to break out of this are actually the villains, and they get their just punishment in the end, when they are doomed to perpetual, unendurable repetition rather than variety. Churchill once said something like, "democracy is a terrible social system, but it's better than all the others". Likewise, this movie shows that, in the eyes of many people living today, a future classless utopia might seem strange and alien, but that it will actually be much better than the horror of the conformity and monotonous repetition of our actual, current-day bourgeois society. This novel and movie represent a brilliant and subtle way of demonstrating the true difference between what we think we want and what would actually be best for us, based on a deep understanding of human nature. Utopia might not seem like a good idea to some, but in fact it's better than all the alternatives.

I saw this movie on Danish TV. If it were available on DVD, I would buy it instantly. It is low-budget, but the story doesn't call for much of a budget. It just calls for competent direction, and it has that in spades. It's nothing less than one of the best Danish movies of the last decade.

Can you keep a secret?
Macholic22 November 2017
Can you keep a secret? Because this is a secret Danish masterpiece. I rather enjoyed having it all for myself, but I feel it is so great, that I ought to share. Imagine a world stuck sometimes in the late 60s or early 70s. The technology, architecture and furniture design all indicates it. Everyone lives a new life every day, as the old way lead to people leading unhappy lives and committed suicides. Instead Madam Data, the mainframe computer, assigns you a new home, spouse, kids, friends and work, every day and makes sure you never meet the same spouse twice. It is an adaption of a Danish sci-fi novel from 1980 and it looks a lot like the dystopian movies of the 60s and 70s, such as Fahrenheit 451(1966), Z.P.G.(1972), and Soylent Green(1973) Here, the man Elef happens to fall in love with Maya, his wife for a day. But how do you get more days with the same person? Its prohibited, and those who seek it are called "The Locked Persons". Those who do not eat their Nightpill, so the Assistant Service can pick them up at night and move them to a new place with new spouse, kids etc. Assistant Service move people and police the rules in the Orwellian society. The chemistry between Elif(Jens Jørgen Spottag) and Maya(Kaya Brüel) works to the advantage of the film, making it a unique experience. It has been shown on Danish TV a few times and is today available for streaming on DR's (Danish Television) homepage, if you live in Denmark. So due to the language barrier and geoblock restrictions, I will probably be able to keep this masterpiece a secret a little longer, only shared with a few other Danish residents.
