The movie starts with Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, and Steve Zahn losing their jobs at a prestigious marketing company. Eddie tries to find a job and can't. While at the park with his son, a friend tells him that he is a great father by being a stay-at-home dad. Eddie gets the idea to start a guy-run day-care service in his home to help pay the bills. Eddie doesn't know the first thing about running a day-care center and the kids know it. The kids have a ball and most of the jokes with Eddie playing the straight man.
