I generally don't like raver movies but.....
DrBugSmith19 January 2005
O.K, this is no cinematic great but firstly (I know this may be hard for some mainstream Americans) but you have to compare this movie to other Australian productions. In other words firstly ignore the buckets of trash we're exposed to from our movie industry.. And compare with standout exceptions like e.g Lantana,Goddess of 1967', etc. This movie I can say did captivate me emotionally, aurally and visually. Didn't sit well with the main character sister's drug death, needed greater depth and perception in reality. I really didn't know anything about the film before I sat down (except dance music) so I was surprised by the level of dramatic elements in it.. Quite possibly "Go" dulled my radar??? A overly fun film this isn't but hey I'm proud of this particular level of achievement for an Aussie film.

Austin Movie Show review -- love and hate
leilapostgrad11 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Some moments in "One Perfect Day" are total crap, while other moments are nothing short of mini-masterpieces. Let's start with the crap. The title has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie. It doesn't take place in one day, it takes place over many days, and most of the days are pretty horrible. Then there are the cheap story-telling devises. They practically spoon-feed you the plot when the director of a famous opera company talks about the need to find a new musician who can make opera more relevant to the public today, and while he's taking, we're shown images of the young and rebellious Tommy, who hears music in everything from trains to homeless people. Cheesy! But after Tommy's sister dies of a drug overdose and he discovers the world of Australia's club and trance music scene, "One Fine Day" starts to get interesting. Yes, it's full of predictable good guys and bad drug deals, but the music is transcendental! When Tommy is spinning at an all-night beach rave and his dead girlfriend is singing while he's playing violin, the music is nothing short of ecstasy for the ear. I honestly can't decide if I love it or hate it.

not the greatest movie ever made, but well worth 2 hours
mbenninger16 October 2006
I saw this when I lived in Melnourne from 2002-3.

We say it on opening might in Melbourne and while it is not "The Castle" or "The Dish", it's still not a bad movie, especially if you like the music and the whole rave music vibe. What it also does is prove the high quality of Aussie film-making for such a relatively small population.

In fact, if they had made it a 1 hour movie with a bit of plot and all the music scenes, that would have been good enough for me to still pay to see it on the big screen. I bought the sound track and unfortunately they took some liberties on what was in the movie and what is in the soundtrack.

That's really too bad as lots of the movie scenes are not on the soundtrack but in the movie and some of them are very good. I was hoping for a better sound track compared to the movie, but hey, it might be a good rental if you're into the music...

A beautifully crafted film and a hell of a trip
carl_scarlett11 February 2004
This movie was very well directed and edited. It's been 2 years in post production aparrently, but the effort was well worth it. There's quite a lot of visual effects, and the accompanying sound is awesome.

Basically, the film is about a young man's journey to reach an audience with his music. The man (Tommy) has a talent for hearing music where others hear only noise, or none at all. I was impressed with how this was conveyed.

Tommy struggles to find not only a mechanism for getting heard, but a series of personal dramas threaten to consume him as well.

The movie was a fantastic cocophany of sight and sound. While the plot was a little tedious for me, I'm sure it won't affect most peoples opinion of the movie. I'd recommend seeing it.

One decent movie
uncre8tv13 March 2007
This is an honest effort, and as other comments have noted, way above par for the Aussies. It trods on the well worn ground of Human Traffic, Groove, and (ugh) Go, but does bring a fresh cohesive central narrative to the aural candy genre. It's an above average drama that embeds itself in the raver scene without using it as a crutch. It doesn't ever really rise above its humble grounding, but it does stand as a fine movie to watch while you're getting a buzz on. The melodrama at the beginning works better than the melodrama at the end. You can't help but like Trig, if for no other reason than his pre-stingray Steve Irvin bit.

Nothing perfect about this movie...
jeepcj5guy1 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
...This critique does contain spoilers...

I wouldn't go so far as to say that this movie was a total failure, but it was pretty bad. Following in the footsteps of films like Groove, which to one degree or another focuses on rave culture, recreational drug use and dance music, this movie had the potential to go above and beyond the stereotypical counterculture film because it takes a much different angle. Creating music out of real-life sounds and rhythms is by no means new, but it is a fairly unique idea and the actual composition of electronic music is not something any other film in this genre has really examined (at least from what I've seen). The cinematography is pretty good, the acting isn't horrible and the plot is interesting. Unfortunately this movie is so focused on mixing drama and emotionally-charged plot twists into the formula that it loses touch with the message it is trying to provide; or, at least, the message is overshadowed by the writers trying too hard to make the movie dramatic and it falls flat on its face. What's sad is the plot could have been much more coherent and resonating if only a few bad choices weren't made.

For one thing, how did Tommy go from never having mixed live electronic music to being some kind of DJ prodigy in the course of a few days or weeks? I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work that way, even with previous music experience (I know a couple of DJ's who took years to get to that point). Two: what is the point of having the sister and the girlfriend die (and possibly the third death of the sister's unborn baby)? This is hyperbolized, soap opera nonsense. The love triangle thing with the drug dealer guy – also pretty dumb. Three: how is Tommy even capable of functioning after these two (or three) supposedly significant deaths let alone able to get up on stage and spin an awesome music set for the second time in his life? Of course, that's not all that's wrong with this movie and I would go into more detail, but I just don't feel like writing a thesis on plot trajectory vs. theme and character development and all that nonsense. Bottom line: it's somewhat entertaining, but nothing extraordinary like some people here seem to think.

Yep, almost.
ptb-83 July 2005
This is an interesting and almost rewarding film, and like PARTY MONSTER or GO and parts of BLURRED, a difficult genre of music film (rave, road trip or dance party) to get on screen intact with the same feeling and experience as having really been there. Dan Spielman along with the hilarious and talented Nathan Phillips has roles under presented/directed and as a result one wishes we had the mature producing talent in Oz to properly see these young actors offered genuinely strong and interesting parts. And make the best of them. However, ONE PERFECT DAY is about as successful as one could wish for under the Oz film production circumstances. Unlike DECK DOGZ, UNDER THE RADAR, GARAGE DAYS, THUNDERSTRUCK or the worst offender of all: YOU AND YOUR STUPID MATE, (also unfortunately somehow starring young Nathan) OPD does rise above the pack with a genuinely compelling idea, that this is a young musician on a journey to find his place in the music scene and dance party underworld. It seems actually genuine in its romantic music ideas and offers Spielman a chance to be a character worth respect and attention. the music soundtrack is very good and as seen in a big cinema with an excellent sound system lifts the experience more than one would expect. Sadly like all those other titles above this film sank without trace, a fate undeserved but unfortunately in the public's eyes, guilty by association. Bit like Nathan Phillips' career. Somene from the USA needs to rescue this actor before he just ends up having to get a job in a shop. Spielman looks not unlike excellent DIRTY DEEDS actor Sam Worthington (also seen in the verbally clumsy tap dance musical BOOTMEN).. So much potential talent all at the mercy of crap producers and directors.

not very good
randomStuff1012 January 2005
Not a great movie, but a good message of music found in nature - environmental and accidental sounds as a basis for electronic "trance"... But where was the good trance?

I wanted to watch and enjoy. I wanted to recognise and relate. "Trance-Zen-Dance"???... But where was the Zen?? The realism wasn't there. This dance underworld crowd no substance.

This movie's story could have been developed or changed a lot before the attempt at making it. Not much else to say except don't watch it, or maybe it will be enjoyed by future generations for unknown reasons.

Loved, Loved, Loved it!
bbumatay24 April 2005
This movie has the best soundtrack! I watched it at the Tribeca Film Festival exactly one year ago in April 2004, and it still hasn't been released in the US as far as I know. And I still haven't seen any news of the soundtrack being released either. I hate how it isn't easier to see foreign films sometimes. Even in NYC. If this film does ever make it out, I think most people will really enjoy it. Not only is the music and story outstanding, but the message is a good one. I don't think this film has been extremely well received in Australia where it is from, but the US would eat it up. Great work on combining good music, good cinematography, and a good story!

...Rubbish. See "GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) to watch how it needs to be done.
liquidizer20006 January 2006
"One Perfect Day" is a musically-oriented drama surrounding the tale of a classical composer who discovers his sister died after taking some drugs in a party. He then decides to pursue the rave scene, and finds himself completely immersing in a new and digital age of music.

...Sounds tight, huh? I thought so myself. This movie does manage to pull some nifty tricks on the unsolicited viewer - but c'mon!! * Crickets do NOT sound anything like a choir when you sample them and pitch them down!! The choir thing is the intro for Orbital's track under the same name as the movie title.

* Some of the dramatic/hallucinogenic elements are just poorly acted and filmed. The raves are shot in a most rough manner that does not capture the energies of a real party (unlike it's fellow mates "Groove" and "GMT").

If you really want to see a Dramatic movie that's also related to and includes a lot of action from the electronica scene, try "GMT" which is a tight movie about an electronic band and their break-ups and hold-ups.

my kind of people, minus the drugs
pete-1312 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I waited a long time see this movie. I first saw the long 2 min and 30 second trailer on the PVD DVD Global. I was immediately impressed. I first bought the soundtrack as an import, listened to that thoroughly and liked it a lot, as I am an avid lover the trance and techno.

I then got the DVD from Australia which took me awhile to get. I might be one of the few people who has it in North America. But anyways on to the movie, the sound is very impressive, the use of music in scenes is very well done, they even made Emma's death look like a fantastic abyss. The acting isn't the best, and the story line is a tad faulty, I don't feel anything for these people who put themselves in a drug ridden world. But when the movie is about the music, it really owns. The best part was when Tommy talks about how the crickets process and hear things, and how music is to them, it is real interesting and one of the films high moments. The DJing concepts and music scenes are done very well. The ending is not that great. This film is all about the music and it leaves you dancing with it, however I think the character of Tommy could have played a better final opus.

A good Austrailian film, they are real cool people whenever I meet em.

People need to start hearing beyond what they hear now, there is so much more to life than top 40 and getting up and going to work every day....someone once asked me why I like trance so much...I simply answered it with another question..."have you ever been in a place where everyone is on the same page? but reading a different book?"

Unification!

A one-sided look at the rave culture in Australia told around a depressing story
chikeyer4 November 2017
Touted at the time as Australias answer to Human Traffic I decided to give this film a watch. Never have I regretted a decision more. This film I nothing but anti drug propaganda set to a mediocre soundtrack and wooden acting. Don't bother, I have seen better film on teeth after a three day bender.

pretty bloody awful
debsicle23 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
this is the sort of movie that parents would make to stop their kids taking drugs. the sad thing is that the acting isn't bad, and the filming is OK but seriously? who the hell learns how to mix in a couple of weeks? and what sort of DJ, not only once but twice, plays ONE track and then walks off the decks? A s**t one. i have a lot of DJ friends and i am heavily involved in dance music and i frankly found this movie insulting to it. the only redeeming points of the movie was the bit of drama going on with the main characters until it became completely outlandish and myself and my boyfriend sat there laughing as one of the main characters died. i have a feeling that laughs were not the desired reaction. don't bother.

Awful clichéd, boring and poorly made.
thomas-morison5 April 2008
I have a sneaking suspicion this film is a 'cleaned up' version of the year 2000 British puke-comedy "Kevin & Perry Go Large" which bares surprising similarities in both storyline and characters depth (particularly the bad guy). It too is about teens looking for DJ fame on "an odyssey of self-discovery and tragedy" within the dance scene.

Sadly, "Kevin & Perry Go Large" wins out in my books. This movie is not even worth the 10 lines required for an IMDb user comment, so the rest of the space shall have to be filled with this poorly constructed 'run-on' sentence - I do appologise for wasting your time, hopefully this sensation will give you some idea of how I felt watching "One Perfect Day". Blah blah blah blah blah.

Brilliant!
ArmyJonHall9 March 2004
Possibly the best Australian movie I've ever seen (not including The Castle, however). Superb scenes backed up with an even better soundtrack make this whole film a feast for the senses and emotions. The only bad thing I have to say about this film is that there were a few extraneous scenes which could have been cut out, but all up the pros definitely outweigh the cons, much in the same way that Mike Tyson outweighs a 15 year old school girl. The final scenes at the Vodafone Arena rave are absolutely amazing, I'd recommend people to see the entire film just for that one scene.

Totally amazing.

Warning Label Required - Not for Old Fogeys
herb_at_qedi26 December 2008
From the other comments I just read, I found out that this was about trance music and the rave scene. Or is that rave music and the trance scene. Being 52 and American, I didn't know about any of this. I did catch that it was about drugs and young people's susceptibility to drugs and the tragedies that can cause, but even that was obtuse and inaccessible to someone like me.

Someone mentioned Pieces of A Dream, and I did think of that one as I watched this. I did not care for that experience as I felt that an artistic and misanthropic director threw all nasty imagery he could think of at his audience and regarded his audience as mere guinea pigs on which to vent his venom. But, at least I understood what was going on. The director, like many reviewers, clearly subscribe to the new mantra of film-making that mandates that the best directors maximize obtuse imagery and minimize words. A lot of guesswork was required.

I guess I'm old-fashioned but I still find plot essential and wish to follow one when I see a movie. I needed a prerequisite course in trance and the rave scene in order to understand this one.

A friend asked me if I liked Australian movies, and I've loved many of them, about 20 of the 23 I've seen. He lent me this one. Make that, 20 out of 24.

Amazing film
jimmy121214 April 2004
One perfect day is one of the most amazing films i have ever seen. It made me laugh and cry and inspired me to try so many things.

it sends an obvious message about drugs which everyone can understand after seeing this film. it also has a message about music. it shows that no matter what kind of music you're into or what experience you've had, jut giving composing a go can make so many people happy. one perfect day shows music as an alternative to drugs because of the natural high it gives. you don't need to like dance music to enjoy one perfect day. its very sad and very beautiful. i love it!

one perfect film
wrlang29 October 2006
One Perfect Day is about a small group of young people whose lives all meet within the art of sounds and visions. As an old disco-holic that stopped looking for driving dance beats after the dullards killed disco in the late 70s I fell out of the music scene and traded my cars woofers, midranges, and tweeters for a minivan and bringing up kids. I caught up just recently with trance and dance music and fell in love all over again. Swing, big band, disco, dance, trance. Other music is nice, but… Back to the movie. Lives are made and lost as drugs and bad decisions from immature people mix in a deadly cocktail that devastates the characters on the dance club scene. In the end, what's left of the good guys win and bring some wonderful sensory sugar to everyone. The casting was excellent as was the sound track, plot, dialog, and cinematography. This goes to show you that excellent movies and excellent actors aren't necessarily made in Hollywood USA. Bravo!!

requiem for a dream vs human traffic
ultraluzer26 September 2005
this film is the adequate balance between the two films mentioned above. it shows why an outsider would be drawn into the world of e's and clubbing, and at the same time illustrating how easily drugs can shred people's lives from one moment to the next. the science fiction element is a classically trained composer writing operas being drawn into the world of fatboy slim and ministry of sound and sticking to it despite the tragic events that are an an indirect result of it, but at least it depicts drug use, so it's a safe bet that 80% of all English speaking students around the world will see it sooner or later. all cynicism aside though, i consider this to be a tolerably written, beautifully directed and beautifully shot film with a soundtrack that limewire will be grateful for. most cynicism aside, i meant.

Totally awesome film
Lozzyrhino1 October 2004
I saw this film at the Up Over Down Under film festival in London and I was completely blown away by it. The music was incredible, the storyline realistic and the acting was fantastic. But it makes me sad that in reality, most people around the world won't get to see it as it doesn't have any 'big' Hollywood names or any special CGI effects. Yet I thought this was so much better than the films currently being churned out of Tinseltown and has so much more going for it. Go and see it if you get the opportunity; it will make you laugh and make you cry. And it even might make you think twice about drugs and doing something positive with your life.

A visually/ musically brilliant film
benturkalj20 December 2005
When you think of Australian film making, one often thinks of those stereotypical stories of suburban housholds or something to do with Abba. Thankfully, a new form of cinema has come out of Australia in recent years, and "One Perfect Day" is definitely one of the most promising pieces.

Essentially, "Perfect" looks at the life of a brilliant young composer, Tommy, who has tried to make a name for himself in Opera. Following the tragic death of a family member, he finds himself drawn to the world of Dance music, as he tries to work out what life was like for her. it is hear that he finally finds a way to reach people, though there are a lot of bumps along the road for him.

Paul Currie's directorial debut is one that shows a great deal of flair. Visually, the film always entices you with it's stunning cinematography, with just the right balance between the overly manic choices of Baz Lurman and normality. Musically, it also has a pretty awesome soundtrack, and quite amazingly it is one that keeps a modern flavour yet still manages to create an emotional connection to the characters.

Everything seems to work in this film, despite some minor issues with the story, but this is definitely worth checking out.

Great Mix of Sight, Music & Drama
el_jaguar5 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Saw an advanced screening and absolutely loved the storyline. This is a sort of Orpheus & Eurydice tragedy, where good ultimately triumphs over evil. There are fresh faces from Australia that I think will be A-listers in the future. The Tommy character (played by Dan Spielman) could have been black or Latino in terms of what he had to deal with in the unscrupulous world of music and clubs. His girlfriend Alysse (played by Leanna Walsman) falls into the wrong crowd and while Tommy tries to save her from the club/drug scene, she dies. She leaves him her voice in music and he beats that bad guys out of the club with his version of mixing classical and techno with video. The music mixed in with the storyline crosses racial and cultural lines. Paul Currie's direction makes this film a potential urban culture classic. Even though it was shot in Australia and London, this could be a story that happens in L.A., Chicago or New York. The film will make you just want to "party, party, party." Excellent.

Wonderful Artistic Film
lgandolfino15 May 2008
I was recommended this film by a friend. I absolutely loved it. Very artistic. You can tell that the director has a great eye. I would recommend the film highly. The soundtrack is great, an dif you love trance or rave then you will be a huge fan. abbie cornish is also in this film. i think it was one of her first films and now she has broken out in the American market. it looks like this is the film that started her career. she looks so young in it. i am really interested to see what else this director will have coming out. i like his style and can see that he has a unique way of telling a story. does anyone know any updates on what the director is doing nedxt?

One Perfect Day - Great Film!
the_sarcasm_queen6 May 2008
I picked this film up at a DVD store and really loved it. It has an amazing soundtrack (which I also now own), and I really fell in love with the characters. This is one of the best Australian movies that I have seen for young people. I wish that I had of got a chance to see it on the big screen. This movie really makes you think twice about the drug scene in Australia and the risks involved in taking drugs. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to watch a really good movie, especially if you love music. I can't wait to see more from this director.

A++
