Ever since Steven Spielberg's Jaws redefined the blockbuster back in the summer of 1975, sharks have been a big screen mainstay, terrifying film fans and spawning a horror sub-genre that's usually thrifty in budget but big on ludicrousness.
As Jaws celebrates its 40th birthday today (June 20), take a dive into B-movie heaven and fish out some of cinema's craziest shark-based cinema offerings.
1. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
A Jaws movie in all but name, this souped-up action-horror from Renny Harlin boasts a bigger budget than every other film on this list combined, but a script that rivals them all for hilarity.
The setup? A group of scientists in an underwater research base conduct experiments on sharks in a bid to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Boasting a cast that includes everyone from Thomas Jane to Samuel L Jackson (with LL Cool J as a parrot-loving chef), this is big and dumb - but most importantly,...

Sunday was the beginning of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, an annual celebration of the awesome might of these elegant creatures of the sea. But while Shark Week focuses largely on real sharks (well, real-ish) we wanted to commemorate the sharks that we enjoy the other 51 weeks of the year - the friendly and fearsome sharks that fill up our popular culture. Which pop-culture shark is best? And, just as crucially, which pop-culture shark is worst? We'd write more, but like a shark, this post needs to constantly move forward or else it dies. Onto the list, below! 23. Sharks...

There are two types of bad movie; ones with lacklustre scripts, nonsensical plots and ho hum acting or the ones with awful jokes, over the top performances and laughable special effects. The first type will make you want the two hours of your life back but the second will make you go back for more. You’ll rewatch again and again in hope of catching another extra overacting or a set piece falling apart.
This list could revolve entirely around horror sequels but I’m fairly sure Shark Attack 3: Megalodon was never going to be a classic despite the brilliant acting by John Barrowman.
10. The Wicker Man (2006)
Neil Labute’s unnecessary remake of the 1973 Christopher Lee classic delivers the most Ott performance of Nicole Cage’s career (and that is a big title to hold). There is so many classic brain numbing delusional moments to choose from here.

Chicago – “Piranha 3Dd” is such a pathetic excuse for entertainment that it doesn’t even deserve to be regarded as a film. It’s just soft-core porn stuffed with shoddy special effects. The titillation factor is zilch and the scare factor is even lower than that. Even frat boys under the influence of multiple drugs may have difficulty finding this dreck watchable, let alone funny.
Director John Gulager is the Project Greenlight winner whose 2005 schlock-fest, “Feast,” still remains his crowning achievement. He appears to have no knowledge of why camp has the potential to be amusing. Truly funny camp must be constructed with a degree of sincerity. “The Room” is a timeless comedy classic because its eccentric creator, Tommy Wiseau, mistakenly thought he was making a searing relationship drama. You simply can’t make a movie like that on purpose. Everyone who does fails spectacularly.
Blu-ray Rating: 0.5/5.0

We can, and often do, poke a lot of fun at the C-level shark movies for being outright stupid. But sometimes, despite all the wooden acting, flat writing, and basic presentation, flicks like Raging Sharks, Sharktopus, and Shark Attack 3: Megalodon deliver the goods that genre fans are after: crazy shark-related carnage. Characterization, maybe. Tension, possibly. But at the very least a shark movie should give us some actual, well, teeth. Dark Tide, the endlessly generic new maritime thriller from water expert John Stockwell (Into the Blue, Turistas, Blue Crush), seems so damn happy to have Halle Berry as its leading lady that nothing else got even a cursory thought. The screenplay of Dark Tide, in particular, is an eternal...

It's that time of year again - pumpkins line porches, bags of candy fill the drugstore shelves, and children everywhere are encouraged by their parents to ring the bells of strangers' houses and demand handouts.
Halloween season also is the one time of year where it's pretty much impossible to avoid horror movies. If you're a horror fan like I am, there's really no change in your viewing habits because you were probably going to be watching Suspiria and The Abominable Dr. Phibes tonight anyway. But if you're only a seasonal horror fan, it can be a bit daunting to navigate the sea of bloody entertainments that flood the airwaves this time of year.
To that end, we've put together a list of over 50 horror movies that are as funny as they are scary (whether intentionally or by accident). Hopefully with the list below as a reference, even the most...

Getting excited for Shark Night 3D's opening weekend? If so, you're probably not expecting to wet your pants from fright at the film's "horror". Instead, you're probably hoping for some goofy fun remiscent of Piranha 3D (though thanks to Shark Night's PG-13 rating, a lot less nudity). But if you like your shark served with a slice of cheese, there's another film you'll want to see asap -- the so-bad-it's-brilliant Shark Attack 3: Megalodon. Check out a scene from the 2002 film after the jump to see what I'm talking about. Yes, you just saw a man drive a waverunner into the mouth of a shark. Laughing nefarious, evil laughter as he drives to his death. Even more enjoyable is...

It was announced today that Johnny Galecki will take a part in “I’m.mortal”, the sci-fi thriller from Andrew Niccol, best known for writing and directing another sci-fi tale about genetics, “Gattaca”.
Although this isn’t Galecki’s first role in a film, this could be seen as a boon to the actor, as this is his first major film since the success of “The Big Bang Theory”. It’s unclear as to what part he’ll be playing in “I’m.mortal”, but here’s to hoping it’s more than just a supporting part. Johnny Galecki has great comic timing and the presence to lead some bigger films that are being churned out of Hollywood. He was great in supporting parts in “Hancock” and (a personal favorite) “Suicide Kings”. Johnny Galecki has proven that he can lead a series in “The Big Bang Theory”, playing the straight...

It’s back (again)! On November 9, Shout! Factory is dropping the next installment of the cult classic Mystery Science Theater 3000. This new release, Volume 19 (or Xix if you want to go off the Roman numerals on the box), is a four-disc set which contains four previously unreleased episodes, a bunch of special features, and a limited-edition Gypsy figurine that’s now sitting on my desk as I write this. Let’s enjoy the mayhem, shall we?

Oh, MST3K, how I missed you. Like many of you out there, I’m sure, I spent a lot of time when I was younger watching this show and crying with laughter as Joel, Mike and the robot crew of Crow, Tom Servo and Gypsy lampooned some utterly horrible films. What they did has since been referenced or imitated countless times in pop culture. MST3K is a great example of how...

Shark movies are really a dime a dozen, as any internet search will show, and the plots generally don’t get very creative. Enter Shark Attack 3: Megalodon, a film that combines bad scripting and pitiful effects into one long boat crash of a shark movie.
The three biggest claims to fame in Shark Attack 3: Megalodon are young star John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood), unbelievably bad dialogue, and shark special effects that are no more than CGIed figures zipping into the open mouths of sharks, which are really just slowed down Shark Week footage blown up to make the shark look bigger. Barrowman's a delight, the dialogue is a joke (look it up on YouTube, we're not repeating it here), and the sharks look out of place, even in a movie about sharks.
The plot? Uh, a giant prehistoric...

Complaining about the Oscars is one of my favorite pass times, and my biggest complaint is that my favorite genre is usually shut out of the entire process. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science just made up for past transgressions -- even the shunning of 2002's Shark Attack 3: Megalodon -- by awarding Roger Corman an honorary Oscar. Yep, the man who helped spawn Attack of...

I'm not a fan of the term "guilty pleasures," particularly in reference to movies or music. If you enjoy a movie, why should you feel bad about it? I'm not talking about movies whose camp value launches them into the realm of "so bad it's good": There's no shame in loving Shark Attack 3: Megalodon or Mausoleum or anything else that's a real, genuine hoot. A true "guilty pleasure"...

The ocean offers an ideal setting for a horror novel or film. It’s an unknown, it’s unexplored and it’s an uncontrolled environment that when filled with man-eating predators the situation becomes scarier than any slasher movie I have ever seen. Unfortunately, the killer shark genre has a lot more misses than hits; we can thank movies like Megalodon, Shark Attack 3: Megalodon and, yes, even Jaws: the Revenge with Mario Van Peebles. But that was until author Steve Alten brought Jurassic Park to the deep blue. Unlike the dinosaurs of Michael Crichton series, man did not bring these oversized fish back from extinction; they have survived undetected for millions of years in the unexplored trenches of the ocean, minding their own business until man finally unearthed them…...

Cinematical points me to an announcement at DVDActive announcing a new DVD called Sharks in Venice starring none other than Stephen Baldwin in what looks like a $2 rehash of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it is all so ridiculous I just had to bring it up. It appears some bad guys have gone looking for some treasure in the waters in Venice, Italy, but some sharks have caused a little trouble. Already two guys have been killed and one man has gone missing. The missing man turns out to be Stephen Baldwin's dad who I assume had either been tricked by the bad guys or was working for them. When Baldwin, a famous archaeologist and diver, finds out he heads to Venice to get to the bottom of the story. I found an early trailer and posted it just below and you can also watch another version right here,...

The fine folks who gave us Shark Attack, Shark Attack 2, Shark Attack 3: Megalodon, Shark Zone, and Raging Sharks are now giving us Shark in Venice, a motion picture that combines the absurd notion of a huge man-eating shark prowling the polluted waters of the Venice canals with the even more absurd notion that people want to watch movies starring Stephen Baldwin. The trailer has arrived, and all I can say is Bruno Mattei has to be smiling down upon it from heaven.
A shark stalking the canals of Venice, Italy ... How exactly did Bruno Mattei or some other enterprising Italian schlockmeister neglect to come up with this idea first?
And on top of the killer shark terrorizing gondolas, the filmmakers have even tossed in a treasure hunt involving a lost fortune in a cave beneath the canals.
And on top of even that, just wait until you feast...
