Should have been a show?
happylilstars8 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly this is a well animated pilot, funny, memorable and has great voice acting. I'm glad that the comic was well received enough to even have a pilot episode and I'm glad they put effort into making it good. The characters are easy to distinguish and dispite them being based off of venomous and over exaggerated archetypes of fans you can feel emotions with or towards the characters. The Trivia off is amazing and arguably the best scene in the episode. People might not like jerk characters that much but they're so exaggeratedly rude it's funny. It's sad that this was never made a show but I'm glad it even got one well-animated pilot. If you liked the pilot and want more you should definitely check out the comic and more of Evan Dorkin's other work.

A fun pilot
Rectangular_businessman4 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very fun animation, which cleverly satirizes some of the worst aspects from "nerd culture", without sugarcoating them in any way or form.

Shame it wasn't turned into a full series. While Evan Dorkin hasn't given any official reason of why the pilot wasn't pitched by Cartoon Network, I assume it was probably due budget reasons, since most of the Adult Swim shows from the same era (Such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force) were much cheaper to produce.

In addition to that, the whole "nerd culture parody" was perhaps way too ahead of its time, before geek hobbies went mainstream thanks the increasing popularity of superhero movies.

I have to wonder if, had been turned into a series, if the show would have followed the same path the comic did (Which gets quite bitter on its dark comedy) or if the writers would have tried to make the four leads into more "likeable" characters.

We will never know.

Funny and smart comic-geek 'toon show
tevanson1 July 2002
Although only the premiere episode has aired as of June 2002 on "Cartoon Network," "Welcome to Eltingville" is an extremely well-drawn animated series with sarcastic, penetrating insight into the geek-world of comics, fantasy role-playing and sci-fi movies. The series' three lead male characters each represent an aspect of this world, and are perpetually hounded by a nerdy, even-more-geekier younger (hence, ignored) kid as well. The dialogue comes fast and furious, and is scathingly funny! Anyone into comics, sci-fi or fantasy will find enough inside-jokes and self-references to fill several hours' worth of research! More! More! More! (And the theme song is to die for!)

the verdict is in... It was a good show.
ThunderKing620 June 2020
It was a good show because it was funny.

The animation was great and the characters were funny.

This is what The Big Bang Theory should have been. Its too late for success now.

Why was this show never picked up?
insanecowboy2115 October 2005
I just saw "Welcome to Eltingville" last night on Cartoon Network's AdultSwim.com. It is the funniest stuff this side of Robot Chicken the network has ever offered! Why they never picked it up is beyond me. I was so able to identify with this show because I was the same way those kids were in junior high. Now I can not only laugh at myself,I can also laugh at the others who still do this well into their 20s and 30s, and not be considered mean! It's a great play on the nerd stereotypes, such as knowledge of completely useless(to the rest of us) trivia facts, bootleg just about everything, and using outrageously trivial possessions as status symbols. A great salute to the guys who keep the comic book industry and the internet running!

Only the ending is fine
Horst_In_Translation9 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Welcome to Eltingville" is an animated short film from 2002 directed by (then not yet) Emmy winner Chuck Sheetz and written by Evan Dorkin and he is also the one who wrote the comic book this is based on. So if the one in charge of the base material also adapts his own material, I usually expect something better than these approximately 22 minutes. You could say it is a bit of a nerd story with a reference here and there to stuff you have seen on The Big Bang Theory and yes I know this one here came first. The first third of the film takes place in the mother's basement where the boys play together a board game that takes them into a world of fantasy, could be a pen and paper too I am not sure. Afterwards, the action moves to the local comic book store where the gang finds a great Star Wars item and two people really want to have it, so they get into a nerd knowledge contest and the one who loses is the one who won't get it. Or so would be the rules because when one guy loses (and he is the Cartman equivalent of this cartoon) he couldn't care less and a quick race home begins to see who can get the money first. Actually, when this contest is over is also when I thought the film was really creative and funny at times, but it is not worth sitting through the 15 minutes before that I must say unfortunately. I am not sure if they intended to turn this one into a series or not, but I think that perhaps I would have given it another chance had they done so. But not particularly enthusiastically and if the level after the first few episodes had not been better, I'd have been out pretty quickly. So yeah, close call, but this short film from over 15 years ago gets a thumbs-down from me, even if there are occasional glimpses of fun entertainment. Not too many though. Not recommended.

Has a LOT of promise.
dootuss25 November 2002
I saw the pilot of this show on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" last night, and I have to say that it has a lot of potential if it gets a shot at having a run of its own. It's a very funny show, and I think the characters are HILARIOUS (Especially Bill, and Josh)!! Willoughby (the dorky wannabe who's always getting injured) was a riot too. I hope this show gets a shot on a network, or Cartoon Network because this is worthy of having a run.

This gets a perfect 10!

Lame Adult Swim Pablum
funrocket3 September 2014
This cartoon is about four sociopathic nerds who seem to spend all their time consumed in stereotypical nerd interests like comic books, movies and role playing games. It intends to be a humorous look at fanboys but is poorly written, with all the jokes falling flat and having unrelatable social misfits. It's almost a cautionary tale as this show highlighted the lives of four nerds several years before Big Bang Theory. You see exactly where Big Bang Theory could have gone wrong with poor writing and obnoxious unlikeable people. The show even stops dead in the middle for a trivia contest, not a humorous one but literally reciting trivia toward each other for several minutes! Adult Swim is known for its mostly low quality shock humor shows and it still wouldn't touch this turd, shows you it was to infantile for even them.

We are the "Eltingville Science Fiction Fantasy and Role Playing Game Club!"
BlazeFox26 November 2002
Awesome and hellaciously funny. And has spawned a show on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" just as equally funny. I love watching the antics of the very nerdy and quirky characters (whom kinda remind me alot of myself and people I know) The satyre of the show is very good. And when they do a Trivia Off, look out! Of course most people who have seen the show may have been un able to catch all the in jokes and sci-fi refferences (Unless you're a huge trekkie or Star Wars buff, I myself am more into Knight Rider )

Josh reminds me alot of my friend John whom is majorly into Pax Draconis, DnD, and anthropomorphic animal role playing games such as "Werewolf: The Apocolypse." and also Furry comics. Its funny to watch the characters beat the living crap out of each other over collectors items. This is a REALLY funny show. But it is mainly made to appeal to nerds like me and John. Which is kinda what Adult Swim is geared towards, just us nutball anime /sci-fi buffs. I don't know of many football jocks who watch Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop. Or Space Ghost Coast to Coast, or Home Movies for that matter.

This has to be one of the best "animations for geeks" that I have ever witnessed. The trivia fight between club members in the comic book shop was one of the best written spots I have seen in an adult cartoon. MAJOR kudos go out to the writers for coming up with such a good trivia-laden episode. And I agree, "No Boba Fett body, then he's not dead."
