Taking the wheel
It's a big black beast of a car, the kind of vehicle that makes drivers feel shielded from everyone else on the road. It has its own artificial intelligence, hazard detectors of numerous kinds and even an autopilot. It also has a smartphone app with which it can be operated remotely, but when Sandra's toddler accidentally uses this when she's outside it, on a lonely desert road, they find themselves in serious trouble.
Monolith is a film that perfectly captures the kind of scenario every parent dreads. It's a tough little thriller, pitting its heroine against a hostile environment as she strives to rescue her child, but the sense of desperation it evokes will be familiar to many. Director Ivan Silvestrini, excited to be screening his film at Frightfest, told us something about how it began.
Taking a stand in the desert
"I love movies that combine action and emotion.

Melissa McCarthy gets on her bike in Spy.
Cagney And Lacey it is not. But do negative reviews for Hot Pursuit mean it’s really a turkey – or do they highlight a failure on the part of a mostly male critical academy to “get it”?
For the last couple of years have seen a mainstreaming of the Bechdel test into a genre – the buddy (cop) movie - that has hitherto been a distinctly laddish preserve.
Recent manifestations of this trend include both Spy and The Heat, which, like most buddy movies, rely for basic premise on an odd coupling. In The Heat, uptight Sandra Bullock with sassy street-smart Melissa McCarthy: in Spy a rather more grounded McCarthy teamed with gawky best friend Miranda Hart, as well as a host of strong female co-stars.

In this freewheeling action comedy, Dax Shepard plays Charlie Bronson, a former getaway driver who jeopardises his Witness Protection Plan identity in order to help his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) get from their backwoods town to the bright lights of Los Angeles. Taking the wheel of a souped up 1967 Lincoln Continental, they've got to stay one step ahead of Tom Arnold's lawman and her raging ex-boyfriend (Michael Rosenbaum). Fans of Smokey & The Bandit will have a petrol-headed ball.
