The Suicide Club
Prismark1030 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Based on short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. This could easily had been 'The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes' adventure.

Bohemian Prince Florizel (Alan Dobie) is looking for danger and excitement. When a man (David Collings) enters a bar handing out free custard tarts. A disguised Prince Florizel along with his faithful companion, Colonel Geraldyne learn about a perverse club.

The Suicide Club meets every friday. Its members are those who wish to end their life due to some kind of misfortune or they are tired of life.

The club is run by the flamboyant and sinister President (Bernard Archard) who is assisted by an unnamed female. Each friday, cards are dealt by the president. The person who draws the ace of spades will be the next victim. The man who draws the ace of clubs will be the executioner.

Prince Florizel suspects something evil about this scheme and he is not wrong. The president sells the dead corpse on to a doctor for money. It is a profitable trade with a fresh corpse ready for medical experimentation each friday.

Of course this is a link to the body snatchers plot of Burke & Hare in Edinburgh.

Prince Florizel is charming and quick witted. Not for him to take the easy way out. Once he finds the ace of spades in his hands, he never considers running away.

There is an air of decadence in this production. The men who would join such as club have tried all the vices that life has to offer. Dobie is suitably heroic and Archard is devilishly villainous who quickly suspects that his newest members are not what they claim to be.
