Andrew salutes seminal TV theme composer Barry Gray, whose work with Gerry Anderson became the earworm of a generation...
There are many memorable images in the shows of Gerry Anderson, and it is nearly impossible to disassociate these from the incidental music supplied by composer Barry Gray. From The Adventures of Twizzle to Space: 1999, Gray was an instrumental part of AP Films/Century 21 Productions, contributing story ideas, incidental and theme music.
Stingray's opening titles are, as previously discussed, spectacular. Typically for a Gray composition, it's brass and percussion heavy, and catchier than influenza. The March of the Thunderbirds and other pieces are played by brass bands and orchestra’s to this day. On top of this, his interest in electronica resulted in his producing effects and music for the Amicus film Dr. Who and the Daleks, utilising ring modulaters and an obscure...

Despite previously claiming that ten year old Chloe Hickinbottom was ‘too young’ to sing her songs, Dame Vera Lynn has now admitted that the young girl did a good job performing ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’ on Britain’s Got Talent.
Chloe wowed the judges and audience with her heartfelt rendition of the wartime tune at her recent Birmingham audition and bookies have since tipped her as a possible winner of the 2010 series, you can watch a video of her performance here.
Dame Vera told The Times:
“It’s great that a young girl wants to sing my songs. She sounded very mature, she had a good presence, and she looks good. More importantly than all of that, she sings in tune. She has got absolutely great potential.”
She added: “For a young girl of 10, the words and the sentiment won’t mean as much as for an older person.

Little Chloe Hickinbottom wants to use the Britain’s Got Talent prize money to buy a lifetime supply of leggings and jeggings from Primark. You go, girl! She baffles everybody born in the last 60 years by choosing to sing a Vera Lynn song, which by the way Dame Lynn has now insisted that she was too young to sing!
We had a sudden urge to ‘ave a street party, guv. Postwar spirit is alive! Great vocals though. All she needs is a “scratchy record” sound effect for added authenticity.
After she sang Amanda Holden gushed:
‘I definitely wasn’t expecting that! You have a beautifully old fashioned voice!’
Louis Walsh (who was standing in for a sick Simon Cowell) added:
‘You were born to sing! I think you’re fantastic, you could sell records. The best today so far!’
Piers Morgan added:
“You have an extraordinary voice, “I’ve never heard anything like that.

Young Chloe Hickinbottom impresses with Vera Lynn song
‘The Forces Sweetheart’ Dame Vera Lynn has claimed that ten year old Chloe Hickinbottom is too young to sing her song ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover.’
Schoolgirl Chloe will be seen stunning the Britain’s Got Talent judges tonight with the classic 1940’s track, however Lynn claims that a child so young couldn’t possibly capture the ‘passion and conviction’ needed for the song.
Dame Vera, 93, told The Mirror:
“It’s a big ask for her, because she simply won’t understand the meaning of the lyrics.
“The song’s words meant so much to my generation, which is why it has to be performed with a passion and conviction that a 10-year-old, however talented, simply cannot be expected to embrace, or fully understand.”
She added:
“I’ll be intrigued to hear what she can do with a number that became a...

Dame Vera Lynn has consulted her legal team after the British National Party (BNP) used two of her performances on a compilation CD without her permission. The BNP has named the album White Cliffs Of Dover after the 91-year-old's famous wartime song and also includes her version of 'All Alone In Vienna' on the disc. Lynn's tracks feature alongside songs from other artists including The Andrew Sisters and Glenn Miller. Her solicitor Nigel Angel said: "Her position is that the song was included without her approval. She does not align with any political party. I will be discussing (more)...
