“Civil War,” the new acclaimed drama from director Alex Garland, is dominating theaters everywhere, and the film’s star Kirsten Dunst gives one of her best performances in her long and varied career. In honor of her latest movie, let’s revisit her many awards races, including her first Oscar nomination for “The Power of the Dog.”
Dunst’s first role that brought the actress lots of awards attention arrived in 1994 in Neil Jordan’s “Interview with the Vampire,” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Dunst’s performance as the young outspoken vampire Claudia earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, up against Sophia Loren in “Prét-à-Porter,” Robin Wright Penn in “Forrest Gump,” Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction” and Dianne Wiest, who won the trophy for “Bullets over Broadway.”

What Oscar records will be broken and which ones will remain intact at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony March 10. With a win, Billie Eilish, 22, and Finneas, 26, would become the youngest artists ever to win two Oscars before the age of 30. The pair won for James Bond theme “No Time to Die” in 2022, and are nominated this year for “What Was I Made For,” from “Barbie.” Only three individuals have clinched two Oscars before turning 30: Luise Rainer earned back to back Oscars by the time she was 28 for “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936) and “The Good Earth” (1937); Jodie Foster in 1989 for “The Accused” (age 26) and in 1992 for “The Silence of the Lambs” (29); and Hilary Swank in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” (26) and in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby” (29).
Meanwhile, Diane Warren faces a less enviable milestone with her 15th nomination for “The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot,” potentially tying with the late Alex North...

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Oscars 2024: 3 Records Set For The First Time In The 96-Year-Old History, Martin Scorsese Achieves A Milestone At 81 & Women Directed-Films Owning The Stage! (Photo Credit –Instagram/IMDb)
Oscars 2024 nominations are here, and a lot is happening apart from the disappointing Barbie snub. There are a few records that this year’s noms have set, and we’re here to take a look at the best three of them all. Oppenheimer, with its 13 nominations, remained just one nod away from sharing a record of highest noms for a single film shared by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land (14).
The 81-year-old genius!
But, there are three special records that broke at Oscars 2024, which happened for the first time in the 96-year-old history of the Academy Awards. To start with, we had Martin Scorsese becoming the first living director to surpass Steven Spielberg’s record of being the most nominated director at the Oscars.

Native American characters have been depicted in the movies since the dawn of Hollywood, but in 2024 an actual Native American actor has finally been nominated for an Academy Award.
Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimiipuu) has been a frontrunner all season for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and on Tuesday morning she officially became a best actress Oscar nominee. Her predecessors in the category include Whale Rider’s Keisha Castle-Hughes (who is Maori) in 2004 and Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio (who is Native Mexican) in 2019, while other Indigenous nominated actors include Graham Greene (who is First Nations), nominated for best supporting actor in 1991 for Dances With Wolves, but Gladstone is the first Native American acting nominee.
With 1983 best song winner Buffy Sainte-Marie’s ancestry now in dispute, Gladstone could also now be tied for the first Native American Oscar nominee in any category. (Sainte-Marie was raised by...

Lily Gladstone has made Oscar history.
On Tuesday morning Gladstone was nominated in the Lead Actress category, making her the first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in this category.
If she wins, she will be the first indigenous actress to do so in this category.
In Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone portrays Mollie Burkhart, an oil-rich Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), the nephew of an influential rancher. When her Osage Nation family and friends are systematically murdered, and her own health fails dramatically, a murder investigation ensues, led by the then-nascent FBI.
Earlier this month, Gladstone who is of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, made Golden Globe history too, as she became the first indigenous woman to win Best Actress. In her acceptance speech she said, “This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little...

No Maori Allowed, directed by Corinna Hunziger was named the winner of the Pasifika Award and recipient of a $5,000 cash prize at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
It recounts the story of a teacher who unearths a secret past in the town of Pukekohe. That causes Maori community figures to come forward to share personal stories that shaped their lives.
The festival’s Kau Ka Hōkū or shooting star award for an international emerging filmmaker making their first or second feature film, was awarded to “Asog,” by Sean Devlin. It is a tragicomic road film that follows a non-binary Filipino comedian pursuing their dream of becoming a pageant queen.
The jury also provided honorable mentions for performance to “Mustache,” directed by Imran Khan and to “Tiger Stripes,” directed by Amanda Nell Eu.

This post contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio starring in a film directed by Martin Scorsese is so commonplace it could be its own category of movie trivia, which only makes the casting of Lily Gladstone in "Killers of the Flower Moon" all the more exciting. As reported by Variety, Gladstone (she/they) will be campaigning for Best Actress, not Best Supporting Actress the way many critics and analysts had predicted. Since her breakout role in Kelly Reichardt's "Certain Women" in 2016, Gladstone has been classified as "one to watch," but nabbing a leading role in a Martin Scorsese film has skyrocketed them into public consciousness.
As she (along with other SAG-AFTRA members) is currently on strike, they hasn't been able to talk at length about her performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon," save for interviews conducted months ago. If they were to secure a nomination,...

You may have noticed that there’s been a lot of talk about Lily Gladstone and her Indigenous heritage and what that fact will mean for her chances in the Academy Award Best Actress race as her epic feature “Killers of the Flower Moon” from director Martin Scorsese preps for liftoff in wide theatrical release this Friday (October 20). Gladstone is running a solid second place behind Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) in the Gold Derby combined Oscar odds for her much-praised performance as Osage Nation member Mollie Burkhart in the tragic fact-based saga.
Gladstone herself is of Blackfeet and Nimiipuu heritage and raised on a Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana. One would presume this fact won’t work against the actress in 2024 as it might have in, say, 1954 or even ’74. And in fact it was only earlier this year that Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win Best Actress...

The calendar says that we’re still in September, which means there’s still roughly half a year until the 2024 Academy Awards. But it’s difficult to imagine that there will be a more significant shocker this Oscar season than the one that surfaced Tuesday when it was revealed that Lily Gladstone will campaign as a lead rather than supporting actress for her acclaimed role in the Martin Scorsese-directed epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” that wowed the critics at Cannes and breaks in theaters wide on October 20.
In the film, Gladstone plays a member of the Osage Nation named Mollie Burkhart, a real-life indigenous woman whose fellow tribespeople and family members were being murdered at an alarming rate akin to genocide. It’s based on the devastating true story of the Osage who were slaughtered for their oil money in 1920s Oklahoma, as told in David Grann’s 2017 true crime book,...

Lily Gladstone, the Native American actress who plays Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, has been receiving rave reviews for her portrayal of an Osage woman whose family is targeted by a ruthless conspiracy in 1920s Oklahoma. Based on the true story and the best-selling book by David Grann, the film explores the dark history of the Osage murders, also known as the Reign of Terror, when hundreds of Native Americans were killed for their oil wealth.
Gladstone, who is of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu heritage, was cast by Scorsese after he saw her work in Kelly Reichardt’s indie drama Certain Women, where she played a lonely ranch hand who develops a crush on a lawyer (Kristen Stewart). Scorsese was impressed by her natural and nuanced performance, and invited her to a Zoom meeting to offer her the role of Mollie, who is married to...

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” has been riding high on Oscar buzz since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and Lily Gladstone’s eye-opening turn as a tragedy-stricken Indigenous woman in the midst of an Osage slaughter in the 1920s has been at the forefront of those loud whispers.
Gladstone’s campaign announced her “Killers” bid will be for leading actress, and if the “Certain Women” standout were to win, she would become the first Best Actress Oscar winner who identifies as Indigenous.
Gladstone made a splash in Kelly Reichardt’s 2016 indie “Certain Women,”, where she amassed several awards and nominations, including winning the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Supporting Actress prize, as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Her other credits include Reichardt’s “First Cow,” the FX on Hulu critical darling “Reservation Dogs” and “Fancy Dance,” a Sundance premiere which premiered to rock-solid reviews.

Oscar season is always full of twists and turns, and the biggest one yet just dropped with “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Variety has learned exclusively that Lily Gladstone’s work as Mollie Burkhart, an Indigenous woman at the center of a sinister plot in Martin Scorsese’s crime epic, will be campaigned for the Oscars in best actress, instead of supporting where many pundits had speculated. She will campaign alongside her Oscar-winning co-star and executive producer, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Based on David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,” the film tells the tragic true story of members of the Osage tribe who were murdered under suspicious circumstances during the 1920s.

Actor Charlize Theron ended up feeling harassed while immersing herself in her Oscar-nominated role for North Country. To help relieve her own stress with some of the film’s scenes, she quipped that she acted out against the film crew.

North Country was a 2005 drama directed by Niki Caro and starring Charlize Theron. In the film, Theron played miner Josey Aimes, who upset many of her male colleagues for working the same profession as them. As a result, Josey and many other female miners experienced sexual harassment at the hands of their male co-workers. This resulted in a historic sexual harassment lawsuit, which is based on true events.
To prepare for the role, the blockbuster superstar met the actual miners who North Country was based on. Doing so made the movie all too real for the actor.

Just before “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) arrives on PVOD May 16 (an unusually long 41 days after theatrical release), three films — two are new releases — ranked #1 this week.
May 12 saw the debut of two movies with similar plots. In “The Mother,” Jennifer Lopez is a retired government agent who rescues the daughter she gave up for adoption years before, while “Hypnotic” stars Ben Affleck as a cop trying to find his missing daughter. There the resemblance ends: “The Mother” is #1 at Netflix, while Robert Rodriguez’s $70 million “Hypnotic” opened in theaters to disastrous results.
The difference doesn’t lie with the couple’s respective star power, and both films draw on the same “Taken” template. However, “The Mother” seems fresher with Lopez in the Liam Neeson/Gerard Butler role and it’s a streaming original — a platform that makes it easier to attract viewers with a familiar name.
Affleck remains a viable draw.

The Mother Director Niki Caro On Jennifer Lopez As A 'Primal Protection Force' [Exclusive Interview]
This post contains spoilers for "The Mother."
New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro has been making hard-hitting, critically acclaimed motion pictures for decades. Her second feature, "Whale Rider," made Keisha Castle-Hughes the youngest Best Actress nominee in Academy Awards history at the time (although Quvenzhané Wallis eventually set a new record ten years later), and her harrowing sexual harassment drama "North Country" earned nominations for Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand for their roles as miners who embarked on a historic legal battle.
In recent years, Caro's films have become even more explosive. Her live-action remake of Disney's "Mulan" was expected to be one of the bigger hits of 2020, but its release was scuttled at the last minute due to the Covid-19 pandemic before eventually debuting on Disney+ with a premium surcharge. Now she's back with an action movie that was always intended for streaming: "The Mother," starring Jennifer Lopez as an...

In a movie career that stretches back 25 years, Jennifer Lopez has on occasion done flaked-out underworld thriller romance (“Out of Sight”), capery action (“Parker”) and revenge (“Enough”). Yet she has never placed herself at the center of such a down-and-dirty, grimly overwrought, execute-now-and-ask-questions-later B-movie as “The Mother.” I’m tempted to call the film “minimalist,” because if you consider its bare-bones screenplay (by three writers!), its convoluted utilitarian set-up, its 2D villains, and its essential formulaic momentum, it’s a prime example of action filmmaking made basic.
Yet “The Mother” is a Netflix action movie, which means that it has a certain flavor of ambition mixed into its pulp stew. The movie, which should have been 90 minutes long (it’s 116), is lumpy and inflated, it’s sketchy yet a touch grandiose, and it’s full of tersely dramatized scenes that somehow feel overly broad. Lopez, as a military sniper turned...

“The Mother” is like a lot of Netflix action-dramas of late: A mix of different genres with hints of a darker, possibly richer story, that ended up being excised due to budget and/or time constraints.
There is a lot of well-worn inspiration to be found in its familiar plot, from the survivalist parent/daughter relationship found in the 2011 feature “Hanna” to another Jennifer Lopez feature, 2018’s “Second Act” in which Lopez’s character is also at odds with a daughter she gave up at birth named Zoe.
All of this is to say a film like “The Mother” shouldn’t work, and it doesn’t completely gel 100 percent. But in the hands of Jennifer Lopez and director Niki Caro, the film as a whole mostly comes together as an action-packed (at times), contemplative (at times) and entertaining story of maternal self-sacrifice.

Make no mistake, the title character in the enjoyably ridiculous The Mother is given no name, but there’s never any doubt that she’s Jennifer Lopez. From the runway-ready fur hoodie she sports in the Alaskan wilderness to the flawless eye makeup and dewy complexion that withstand everything from childbirth to a knife fight in the snowbound woods, this is a performance so loaded with celebrity baggage it’s never going to be fully convincing as a deadly assassin. Yet JLo of course is the chief reason to watch Niki Caro’s action thriller for Netflix, which is better than average, as star-driven streaming features go.

Despite acclaimed work from Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”), Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”), and Maria Schrader (“She Said”), not a single woman was nominated for the 2023 Best Director Oscar. Ensuing discourse has unfolded predictably: Some are decrying particular omissions, while others feel the quantity and quality of filmmaking opportunities afforded to women continue to lag behind those of their male counterparts.

Age is just a number and it’s a sign that we’re all getting very, very old because we might actually get our first male acting Oscar winner who was born in the 1990s this year.
No man who entered this world in the ’90s has won an Oscar in either acting category yet. There are three currently in the running, two in Best Actor — Austin Butler (“Elvis”), who was born in 1991, and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), who was born in 1996 — and one in Best Supporting Actor, Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), who was born in 1992. But it’s Butler who has the best shot to take home the gold as he’s locked in a three-man battle with Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) for the prize. Butler, who’s already bagged the Best Drama Actor Golden Globe for his turn as Elvis Presley,...

Any best picture lineup of any industry organization that does not include A24’s “Close,” Utopia’s “Holy Spider” and the doc “Sr.,” which is still seeking a distributor, shall be declared null and void…at least in my mind.
In Telluride, all three films played like gangbusters. “Holy Spider,” which premiered at Cannes and won best actress for Zar Amir Ebrahimi, is looking likely to be Denmark’s submission for international feature. Based on the true story of Saeed Hanaei (played by Mehdi Bajestani), a serial killer who targeted sex workers and killed 16 women from 2000 to 2001 in Mashhad, Iran, the film tells a fictional account of a female journalist (Ebrahimi) who investigates the case.
The suspense thriller evokes “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991) and “Dexter,” particularly the show’s sublime fourth, Trinity Killer-focused season. Both lead actors are worthy of Academy attention, and writer and director Ali Abbasi, who helmed the 2018 hit “Border,...

Exclusive: Rosario Dawson and Lana Parrilla are boarding the upcoming SXSW Linda Goldstein Knowlton directed documentary Split At The Root, as EPs.
The pic is schedule to play in the Austin, TX festival’s Documentary Spotlight section.
Split at the Root follows the emotional journey of mothers separated from their children at the U.S. border and the grassroots initiative that, against all odds, reunites those families. When a Guatemalan mother seeking asylum was separated from her kids under the Zero Tolerance Policy, a Facebook post by a mom in Queens coalesced into a movement as thousands of like-minded women across the U.S. refused to stand by quietly. Immigrant Families Together was born – a rapid response group committed to doing what the government couldn’t – or wouldn’t do: reunite parents with their children separated by the Zero Tolerance Policy.

Mike Mills’ critically-acclaimed indie drama “C’mon C’mon” explores the tenuous but transformational bond forged between radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his precocious 9-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman), when they are unexpectedly thrown together by Jesse’s mum, Viv (Gaby Hoffman) while she takes care of Jesse’s mentally-ill father Paul (Scoot McNairy). Norman has been singled out for praise for his performance and could well ride these rave reviews to an Oscar nomination.
As Carlos Aguilar from The Wrap observes: “In a tête-à-tête with Phoenix, Norman carves out a jaw-dropping turn from delicate mood swings and mischievous charm.” Other critics have been equally effusive about Norman’s work in Mills’ fourth narrative feature including Richard Brody of The New Yorker: “Norman, impulsive and spontaneous yet wondrously precise, is one of the great child actors. Auteur Paul Thomas Anderson ushers in his breeziest, most light-hearted effort yet with “Licorice Pizza,” a film that could be an all-around awards player, possibly nabbing him an overdue Academy Award for best original screenplay. Add in debut performances from Cooper Hoffman — son of late Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman — and singer-songwriter Alana Haim, and the film could steal the hearts of awards voters in the months to come.
The comparisons to Cameron Crowe’s coming-of-age film “Almost Famous” will be plenty, in addition to parallels to another 2000 movie, “High Fidelity,” as well as “Dazed and Confused” (1993). Anderson has been nominated for eight Oscars over his career, failing to walk away with a statue:
“Boogie Nights” (1997) – original screenplay “Magnolia” (1999) – original screenplay “There Will Be Blood” (2007) – picture, director and adapted screenplay “Inherent Vice” (2014) – adapted screenplay “Phantom Thread” (2017) – picture and directing
Despite its lighter tones, Anderson’s film may not be beloved by all.

“Belfast” is coming on strong as one of the leading awards contenders of the year, with many prognosticators expecting it to show up in categories like Best Picture, Best Director and the acting categories. Four actors from the Kenneth Branagh-directed film are expected to be in play — Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds — all in the supporting categories. But what will become of the film’s star, Jude Hill? The 11-year-old actor is the only one being pushed for a lead acting nomination and while he isn’t quite in people’s predictions yet, one organization that could give him a major boost is the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Filmmaker Niki Caro and Charlize Theron are teaming up to develop a feature film about women’s fight for equality in big wave surfing for Netflix.
The feature is based on Daniel Duane’s New York Times Magazine article, “The Fight For Gender Equality In One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth,” and the four women — Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms, Keala Kennelly — who are fighting for the right to compete in big-wave contests.
The four women form a powerful bond as they surf dangerous spots including California’s Maverick’s and Maui’s Jaws while asserting their right to join the male-dominated competitions.
Caro will direct the film, from a screenplay adapted by Becky Johnston, which will focus on the four women’s stories and their powerful bond.
Caro will also produce the film adaptation alongside Theron, Aj Dix and Beth Kono for Denver and Delilah.

Some of the recent Disney life-action remakes - and Aladdin, I am definitely looking at you - are little more than pale imitations of the original animations, losing their charm in translation. But this reimagining of Mulan, thankfully, is up there with David Lowery's Pete's Dragon in finding something fresh to say with the material by jettisoning the songs and the emphasis on comedy in favour of bringing its more emotional and adventurous themes to the fore.

The 2021 SAG nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). Our odds currently have Close (37/10) favored to win the award, followed in order by Colman (39/10), Youn (39/10), Bakalova (4/1), and Zengel (9/2).
Close and Colman are the only previous SAG nominees. The two of them vied for the Best Actress award in 2019, with Close (“The Wife”) emerging victorious over Colman (“The Favourite”). Colman is a triple nominee this year, having also earned individual and ensemble bids for her work on the season 4 of the drama series “The Crown.” She shared in...

If you went with the Gold Derby odds to make your Oscar predictions, then you got 19 of the 20 acting nominees correct. The one we missed (and likely everyone did as well): Lakeith Stanfield for “Judas and the Black Messiah” in Best Supporting Actor. Because we had him in lead, where he was campaigned and was in 11th place. The shocking thing is not just that Stanfield got in — with zero precursors — but that both he and co-star Daniel Kaluuya, who had been campaigned in supporting and is the favorite to win, made the supporting actor final five. For a two-hander film in which they play the title characters. So how the hell did this happen?
Obviously we don’t know for sure and we, sadly, do not have access to the vote totals, but we have a very plausible theory. As most Oscar fans know, academy voters can nominate...

When Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards, the most shocking inclusion was Lakeith Stanfield in best supporting actor for his performance in Warner Bros’ “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Not surprising from the standpoint of quality, as he delivers a career-best turn as William O’Neal — an FBI informant that betrays the trust of his friend Fred Hampton, who is played by his fellow nominee and Oscar frontrunner Daniel Kaluuya — but shocking because he campaigned in lead actor.
Kaluuya and Stanfield’s categorization has been debated within social media circles, believing that the former is the co-lead of Shaka King’s historical drama and should have campaigned there appropriately. Even on my personal ballot, I recognized Kaluuya in the lead actor lineup. One theory was that the acting branch might have seen the film as an ensemble piece, similar to “The Trial of the Chicago 7,...

For someone who follows the awards season with a close, particular eye, you read the tea leaves of a cinematic year based on precedent. What have the Oscars done in their history that warrants such a prediction or outcome? Statistics are heavily scrutinized and precedents are meant to be broken under the right circumstances, as we’ve seen in recent years.
Always expecting the unexpected, I took a look at some of the longest-standing Oscar stats, expecting to be proven wrong at some future ceremony; but when it comes to the age of nominees, these records are likely never to be broken under Hollywood’s current behaviors.
The youngest lead actor nominee was 9 years old.
This record has been owned by Jackie Cooper, who was nominated for lead actor for Norman Taurog’s classic comedy “Skippy” (193o-31) at the fourth Oscar ceremony at the age of 9. This declaration of Cooper...

Will Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan” follow in the footsteps of the 1998 animated classic by equaling or exceeding its awards haul? It is entirely possible that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and motion picture academy might respond to Harry Gregson-Williams‘ rousing score. He’s already a 2006 Globe nominee for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” so he’s at least on the awards radar. Similarly, the original song from the film, “Loyal Brave True,” performed by pop star Christina Aguilera and penned by Gregson-Williams, Jamie Hartman, Rosi Golan and Billy Crabtree, might also score a nomination from both groups.
The $200 million China-set action drama was directed by Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”) and stars actress Liu Yifei in the title role and co-stars Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

Jennifer Lopez is set to star in and produce an action film at Netflix called “The Mother.” Niki Caro, who recently directed the live-action “Mulan,” is in talks to direct the feature.
Misha Green, the showrunner behind “Lovecraft Country,” wrote the original screenplay that will star Lopez as an assassin who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter she gave up years earlier. Andrea Berloff (“Straight Outta Compton”) made revisions to the script.
Lopez will produce “The Mother” alongside Elaine Goldsmith Thomas for Nuyorican Productions, Benny Medina and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo Entertainment. Green will also produce. Catherine Hagedorn is the executive producer and Courtney Baxter is the associate producer.
Lopez is also attached to star in another Netflix thriller called “The Cipher,” and she’s currently filming the Lionsgate comedy “Shotgun Wedding.” She’ll next be seen in the romantic comedy “Marry Me” alongside Owen Wilson and Maluma.
