Ooops - that was a missed chance

Warning: Spoilers
As a DVD collector I am buying whatever looks interesting to me on my monthly visit to my favorite DVD dealer. I do buy movies of all genres and I like horror movies and thrillers, also do expect some blood and gore but sure some thrills from such kind of movie. So I was curious when loading the player and got a bitter disappointment, not that much from the story and the effects, but by the making of this movie. Sure I could have checked the comments here and would have know what was about to happen, but everybody makes mistakes sometimes. Frankly, I did not catch the whole story, cause after some time of watching I did some surfing on the internet, as it seemed more interesting, my wife, a horror movie lover as well, went to bed early - this movie did not really work.

Story in short: some bodies show up, a female investigator is up to the case, gets a well hated male partner from the FBI to team up, more bodies got found, a mysterious doctor is involved (why ? -sorry this part I missed), the mixed team is getting closer to each other and the killer, they eventually get the slasher and smoke him, though it is clear something else has to happen, otherwise the end credits would appear, and right - the smart FBI guy finds a link between all the murders and, surprise, to his female partner. When rushing to her home, she is already engaged in heavy fighting with the 'undead slasher' and the FBI-guy finally saves the night.

The story itself could have made it for a big budget movie, as there are many about serial killers. Unfortunalety it turns out that the director seems to have made home-videos before and also used his Cam to shoot the movie. The lights were awful, the cutting seem to have been made on the Home-Pc, the female body (No.3 in this movie) is heavy breathing when the FBI take a look at her, all in all from the start of the movie you realize you are watching a very low budget production. Most of this budget went into the make-up of the slasher, though they should have paid a little bit more to hire a more serious actor to play that role (when he got shot several times, it looks as he is trying to do some break-dancing). Besides the production the acting is scary as well, Ms Baker-Bernhard tried very hard to act seriously, but as found on her filmography this was the last movie she ever made - it says all. Michael Worth - unknown as well, continued his career in uncredited roles or movies most probably nobody ever saw. The director worked as producer only, after delivering this movie, though I wonder how and why. Essence of Echoes, most probably never made the money they put in making it, and that was not much.

Try to avoid this movie, I just rate it 3/10 cause of some nice makeup and some up to horror-movie-standard scenes.

Essence of Low-Budget
Memlets21 September 2002
A serial killer is on the loose, and brilliant FBI agent Julia Gates is on the job.

When victims are found dead in their homes in the middle of the night, Julia and her fellow agents do all their crime-scene detecting and evidence collection by flashlight. Since no one says there's been a power shutdown or a blackout, all we can surmise is that either the victims forgot to pay their electric bills, or the FBI fails to train its agents in the use of a handy device found on the walls of all the fancier houses -- a light switch -- in order to see what they're doing. They must miss a lot of evidence that way.

But, hey, this is a movie in which you hear the following dialog:

"All I know is, the (investigation) went deep."

"How deep?"

"All the way to the top."

Captures the spirit of a low budget thriller
alhla20 February 2004
This was a nice change from weeknight television. It has just the right amount of action, a bit of skin, not too bloody, and lead characters that compliment each other. The storyline is good and has a few twists to keep you guessing. It was not too intense, and there were plenty of moments of drama and fright, and a few amusing moments as well. This is not for the young kiddies, but it is an enjoyable evening for mature teens or older. This movie truly captures the spirit of a low budget thriller. Just let this film take you on the ride. Don't try to figure it out, just watch. Then rewind it and watch it again.

Cool film. Promising start.

The movie delivers exactly as it professes on the DVD cover. A good slasher movie. Brings back good memories to the old Friday the 13th movies where you know that someone is going to get kill, but the beauty is in the imagination of the writer and director to make it cool and startling. This movie does that. Obviously this movie was not a multimillion or even a million dollar film, as seen by some of the acting, but the movie stands on it's own which is a credit to Mr. Rikert. The lost art of the gory move returns.
