Coen for Danish Hicks Only!
lhk-316 November 2001
For foreigners not used to Danish comedy, or to Von Trier specialties only, this picture may seem strange and vulgar. However, we the boys from the countryside, recognize and appreciate the accuracy in the whole cast of characters in this picture, and loudly laughs it so out in the darkness of the cinema. This is a real Danish comedy for hicks, rednecks and others who enjoy good morbid humor, nasty language etc.

Coal black farce plays like a cross between "Dumb & Dumber", "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" and "Mifune", but is a lot less accomplished than any of them. The story of two dimwitted brothers and their troubles with a corpse, a nosy neighbor and a pregnant waitress is pretty thin, but director Oplev tries to compensate with off-the-wall gags and gross-out humor, which sometimes work, sometimes doesn´t. The cast is game, and obviously has a whale of a time, and there are a couple of genuine belly-laughs, but this is a mostly forgettable fare. Leave your brain at the door, and you´ll have a lot of fun, though. **½ (of ****)

I decided to watch this movie for one reason only: Thomas Bo Larsen. He delivers a great performance if somewhat short. I wont talk more about because then I'd spoil the movie.

The movie it self isn't the pinnacle of Danish film-making and if you're used to the renowned Danish directors as Lars von Trier and Bille August then you'll most likely find this movie rather crappy. It lacks all the things that make artistic movies. That said I liked Fukssvansen, It was funny and totally non-intellectual. And once in a while that's what I need to see.

I most likely won't watch it again, but I'm glad I watched it at least once.If I watch it again it's because it's on TV and I don't have anything better to do,

A movie that was made for rednecks and hillibillies?

One seems to really need a specific kind of Danish humour to appreciate 'Fukssvansen'. That said, 'Fukssvansen' is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Where shall I start? Well, it's shot like a C-grade movie. No filter has been used. The story is downright silly and the acting is headache inducing. Two mind-numbingly stupid brothers are forced by circumstances to share their house with a screechingly annoying guy named Finn because they apparently owe him a significant amount of money. Their neighbours are equally idiotic. The older elder brother Carl just happens to meet a pregnant runaway cute blondie and he offers her to be his brother's Christmas present (no sexual strings attached). Next thing, she just pops up at their house and decides to stay there. There is eye candy in the form of Sidse Babett Knudesen. If only I could get back my 90 minutes I spent on this travesty. I wonder why people would spend money to make and watch this? Clearly, I made that mistake. Later on, I read some comments that this movie appealed to rednecks and hillibillies. Oh well!
