Wajood review
ajinkyask-772547 July 2019
Well description of human character, nana patekar steals the limelight from start of the movie. Madhuri done well. The dialogue delivering is excellent and the last scene will surely make heart melt. Very few stories we can see in 90s that were out of the trend of revenge. It was a little that kind but still was way different.

Wajood - Proof of Your Identity !
g_aparna31 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Means Identity. Story relating : What happens when : a Director decides to become an Actor. Result : Ruckus – a whole lot of it – since Directors are much more versatile than Actors – and a versatile man can either be immensely constructive or highly destructive. Parents, Society, Upbringing decides that for any Individual – whether to become constructive ..or destructive. Of course there is Karma Phal, fate, destiny as well – but then Humans are given the capacity – by the Creator – to surpass destiny by a boon called : Free Will.

Story Line : Malhar (Nana Pathekar) lives in a dilapidated chawl (a single building with many families living in small rooms) is born to a poor typist clerk. He is shown Motherless from childhood. Good in studies, a versatile character – wins trophies in Creativity/ drama but is never appreciated by less educated father – who would rather want him to learn typing and make both ends meet. A sad childhood & adulthood – showing that even if the entire World appreciates or marvels at you – the approval & appreciation of parents is definitely required for success.

Malhar used to write & direct dramas/plays in his college – when he meets Apporva (Madhuri Dixit) a very rich and beautiful looking bubbly girl of his college. While directing and working with her – he falls madly in love with her. In an incident when she wins the Best Actress Award – she calls upon Malhar on stage and gives all the credit to him in front of the entire college – such small gestures of Apporva makes Malhar – of a poor deprived childhood – feel that she loves him too – but it was a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile Apporva meets Nihal (Mukul Dev)- son of a rich Bureaucrat – and they fall in love – he was good looking and belonged to a rich background – so the chemistry was but natural. Nihal's father approaches Apoorva's father to ask for his daughter's hand for his son. This news reaches Malhar – and he thinks that this marriage is taking place without Apoorva's consent (since he thought that she was in love with him)- he barges in their house to stop the marriage – and accidentally Nihal's father gets killed – Malhar is sent to jail and Apoorva's father breaks off her engagement with Nihal since after his father's death – he had no identity. All three of them separate from each other at this juncture.

Malhar is shown spending his days in jail thinking of Apoorva all the time – in his dreamland – he had already married Apoorva – and even fantasized her carrying his child – he thought of all the things with her that a simple Indian wife usually does ..or is supposed to do – pampering husband , acting innocent, kiddish etc. Although his father never appreciated him – but still he had kept a place for his father in his dreams and thought of himself as enjoying life with the wife and father – all living under one roof as a family.

Malhar manages to escape and then starts his escapades of making quick money – by giving advertisements in Newspapers and focusing mostly on rich widows –after mesmerizing them – he knew all the nuances of mesmerizing ladies – exactly how to win their hearts – since he was well read and versatile himself - he looted them or simply murdered them for money.

Nihal had become a police officer and Apoorva - a Journalist. Nihal happens to meet Apoorva again to solve the mystery of the 'stranger' in the city who was looting rich widows and murdering them.Malhar gets a companion with him – an ex-maid of a rich widow – and together they loot people . Malhar starts calling up Apoorva and hinted his next step to her – and she used to write it in Newspapers etc. Ultimately, after creating a whole lot of ruckus – Malhar came face to face with Apoorva and she tells him that she'd never loved him in her life – and that it was just his dream – he is heart broken, gets caught and he dies in the end.

Some points to notice :

1. Apoorva organized an Interview with 3 women who had been looted by Malhar – all three of them confessed of his versatility – and the way he had loved them and made them feel important – and the fact that they would forgive him for whatever he had done to them !! Shows how frustrated these Indian widows / spinsters are – kind of 'desperate housewives' – who can be fooled easily by anyone with a wee bit of brains and charms !! Frankly speaking – such women better be looted !! 2. There is a song – 'Aur hum tum' where the maid servant -that Malhar had made as his comrade- is seen singing with him – (by the way – he was having 'sexual' relationship with her – in fact indications are given that he was rendering 'sexual services' to all the women he had looted – shows that the way to a woman's heart is also a 'good hump session' after all– very similar to what men are infamous for !!- poor men have always been cornered world-wide – the fact that women are equally to be blamed is never pointed out !! Well in this song the simple lovelorn heart of Malhar is depicted – the fact that in spite of singing / dancing/having sex with another sexy & voluptuous woman – Malhar continues to think of Apoorva – like she, he and his father on his bicycle, eating together in their small dilapidated house .

An artist's choice. Another movie that deviates itself from the ordinary Bollywood cliché. With an entertaining yet though-provoking story line, this film proves itself to be a definite watch. What distinguishes this film from any other film is the script. The story has several layers, some open for analysis and some layers need some careful consideration, and that is exactly why you lose yourself in the character at the end. The film has a cyclic structure which is bound to thump the hearts of the analytics amongst the audience.

The performances are excellent, especially Nana Patekar... thoroughly outstanding performance. This man has a story to speak in his real-life, it is no wonder that he can act. He sure can do that so well. He loses himself in his character so well that the audience is left with no choice but to not only watch the movie, rather feel it (would've been perfect if the cinematography was a little better though). Madhuri Dixit, too did a good job excluding moments when I'd cringe because of here over-acting at times. Although she was excellent on screen as usual, at times I felt she had to make a real effort to keep up with the excellent performance delivered by my man, Nana!

Having said the pros, I think this movie would surely spread itself over your list of movies that you gotta watch at least once in your lifetime. So do yourself a favour.... watch this gem!

Brilliant movie
craigssale24 August 2016
This is a hidden gem.I'm surprised i've never heard of this movie before. In none of the interviews has Madhuri Dixit ever mentioned about this movie being her favorite and i'm surprised, as the performances by Nana Patekar and Madhuri are outstanding. The plot is very unusual but as an Indian you can relate to the fact that our society puts an immense pressure on education and securing a job thereafter. As parents we do not encourage our child to take up his/her passion and end up pushing him/her to achieving some "regular" job that the society can appreciate. Not all kids can become something what parents want them to be and these are the few who are severely impacted, its like a tug of war in their minds trying to follow passion on one side and being pulled by societal pressure on the other. Nana has two passions in his life ,Theater and Madhuri, and how in the end he pours his feelings out for the love of his life while enacting it in the form of a play, his other love. The way the ending scene was taken is something i've never seen on Indian cinema. This movie is a cinematic genius..Hats off to the person who conceived this thought!and to the actors for delivering stellar performances

Highly underrated
kothawade-amol18 July 2015
Just few pointers : 1) I felt i watched a masterpiece after watching this movie and was surprised to see rating of 6.4 on IMDb and below average collections on box office. Unbelievable ! That's why i am writing this review. 2) If you have not watched yet, then please go and watch. There are at least 4 scenes in the movies, which would make you feel you are utilizing your time for good. (I have watched many Hindi movies and they do not even have one scene which would make one feel money and time are worth spent.

Enjoy !

It is sheer brilliance of the whole team associated with this team.

Sheer Act of brilliance, A must watch to present actors
ashwanirana-8268014 October 2018
A first I am not having words to describe anything about this masterpiece of Bollywood. Whatever I will write will certainly be little that what this act deserves. A truely under-rated movie, such masterpieces are developed once in century. It is no doubt one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is basically movie of Nana Patekar, he has belittled every actor, the emotions he develops on camera are real delight to watch, if you are a true lover of art, I am damn sure you will never forget this movie. Nana Patekar can be seen as in best of his forms in this particular artwork, his dialogues, his way of showing emotions, his way of dialogue delivery are literally unimaginable on Bollywood plateform. Sometimes you may feel that its a Hollywood movie casting some big actors, but no, it is even more then that and thus deserves love. As you can see i am boggling with words, since I have just Finished watching, My simple request to you is, just watch it once. You will love Bollywood, especially Nana

Must watch if you are looking for some real acting!
amitkumarsingh-0708729 March 2015
This is a wonderful movie and a must watch if you are looking for some real acting. This is a fully Nana Patekar movie. Different from other traditional Bollywood movies, this movie asks you several real questions and lets you ponder for answers. The movie revolves around the life of a theatre artist(Nana Patekar)who falls in love with another theatre actress(Madhuri Dikshit) working under him. You will be left thinking at the end of the movie. Dreams, life, reality, the movie speaks of love. The story line is strong, and Nana has given a real life to it.Especially when he appears in different roles. On a whole Nana at his best!

Pure genius theatre
abhi-iitr11 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why is it so under rated on IMDb. this movies is pure acting and a critique on society and a theatre artist's role playing at its best.

Malhar(Nana Patekar) has done brilliant acting going into the depth of role.

The directing and story line is nice (may be u need to oversee the technical details which may have caused it a 6.sth on IMDb.)

But director has nicely intertwined many things and gives it a beautiful ending.

Loved the work.

Cheers

Why was this movie a flop??
ashwinisirisena-7837626 April 2021
I loved it. Loved the acting, especially Nana Patekar's and the story line was good. Ending was unexpected and emotionally moving. Sometimes I felt that Nana Patekar over acted and Mukhul Dev could have done more, but that's just me. I also saw a review that said that Madhuri over acted, but I failed to see it. I really can't understand why this movie was a flop. It could have easily been a Hollywood movie. Never watched it before because of it's flop status, but was on a Madhuri Dixit movie roll and decided to watch. I am so glad I did. Why don't these actors even talk about this movie? It's a gem.
