Check out Dylan O’Brien in the action-packed “Get it Done” trailer for the highly anticipated American Assassin.
Starring Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, Taylor Kitsch, Scott Adkins, David Suchet, and Navid Negahban, American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta.
Based on the American Assassin novel in the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn.
American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War.

‘One Nation, Under Surveillance, With Liberty and Justice for All’
With a tagline like that, you have an idea of what sort of movie Oliver Stone’s Snowden is going to be. Stone has never been one to sugarcoat his politics in his films, so he’s an apt choice to take on a story about the Nsa’s Edward Snowden. And yet as creepy as this trailer is, no additional look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt as America’s greatest hero/traitor, depending on which side you sit.
Also starring are Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Nicolas Cage, Zachary Quinto (I think he could’ve made a better Snowden than Jgl), Tom Wilkinson, and Rhys Ifans. Snowden opens Christmas Day, just in time for the Government to add you to their own shopping list. Watch the teaser below:

Infinite Anticipation
Here at the Vienna International Film Festival there are no multiplexes devoted to the festival. Every cinema is a single screen—all quite beautiful and some, like the Urania, Metro, Künstlerhaus, and Austrian Film Museum, very special indeed—and, scattered at a bit of a distance from one another, they trace a lopsided kind of ellipsis, a loop of cinema if you plan your itinerary right.
Above: Out 1, noli me tangere.
I came anticipating this particular suggestion of cinematic infinity, not just because of my memories of the last two years of repeatedly treading this touring path around the constrained city center of Vienna, but because of the promise of a much desired (by Jonathan Rosenbaum since 1996, and thereafter by an untold multitude of tantalized cinephiles) festival pairing of Jacques Rivette and Suzanne Schiffman's improvised serial intended for television, Out 1, noli me tangere (1971), and Louis Feuillade's...

Olympus Has Fallen was one of two attempts to tell pretty much the exact same story this year, the other being White House Down, turning it into a kind of battle of who could put together the better film involving terrorists taking over the White House and taking the president as a hostage. While this was the first of the two that came out, I actually saw the latter first, and while it had its fair share of problems, I found it hard to lower the hammer down on it completely. Having seen both now, I can even easily say that it did a much better job of conveying the story for some very obvious reasons. However, before we delve into all of that, let’s take a somewhat closer look at what we’re dealing with in terms of plot.

Homeland: The Complete First Season is out now on Blu-ray and DVD with perfect time to catch up with the show before season two airs on Showtime. This show is a prime reason to consider adding Showtime to your lineup of cable channels, for it has a extraordinary cast and a timely story line. The drama stars Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Jamey Sheridan, and James Rebhorn.
The story follows Carrie Mathison (Danes), a brilliant CIA Analyst with a history of being a loose cannon. She thinks that a recently rescued U.S. Pow Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody may actually be a member of Al Quaeda. Instead of a hero he may be a sleeper agent plotting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Mathison acts on a hunch, putting her reputation and sanity at risk to uncover the truth. The plot has so many layers and various clues,...

Chicago – The popular choice as to the show most likely to derail AMC’s “Mad Men” from winning a record-setting five Emmys in a row for Best Dramatic Series is a newcomer to the pantheon of most-acclaimed programs, Showtime’s brilliant “Homeland,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. This is must-see TV in every possible way.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
“Homeland” is expertly made television on every level from the intricacies of the plotting that brilliantly plays cat-and-mouse with viewer expectations for the whole season to the perfect performances from the four central performers — Damian Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, Morena Baccarin, and, most of all, Claire Danes, who I suspect will win another Emmy in a few weeks to put alongside the one she took home for “Temple Grandin.” She’s spectacular. With just the right balance of international intrigue and character-driven drama, “Homeland” is easily one of the best shows on TV. We...

Not since the spy craze of the 1960s have there been so many television series about intelligence agents. There was the late, lamented and still-missed Rubicon and the Jj Abrams misfire Undercover. Currently, there’s the frothy, entertaining Covert Affairs and for those who like their espionage tales with some meat on the bones, there’s Showtime’s Homeland. The second season of the acclaimed series arrives at month’s end, but for now, the first season is just out on disc from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Anchored by the riveting performance from star Claire Danes, the series explores CIA agent Carrie Mathison and her quest to determine if a returned American Pow, Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), is the real deal or a sleeper Al Qaeda agent. Sounds simple enough, right? Instead, over the course of a dozen episodes, nothing is as it appears, starting with Mathison herself.

Moriarty: The Dark Chamber is to be adapted as a musical, Image Comics has announced. Announced at the 2012 Image Comics Expo over the weekend, Moriarty will take its cues from the first arc of Corey's comic series. Closing out Wavelengths 2011 was an inspired, if imbalanced, double bill that matched The Return (see pic above) - the newest work from Nathaniel Dorsky (who is some kind of avant-garde guru) - with a live cinema performance by Sandra Gibson, Luis Recoder, and Olivia Block called Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure. While the pairing loosely made sense on a strictly experiential level, there was some significant asymmetric weight distribution in this program, temporally and qualitatively speaking. Programmer Andréa Picard intimated an awareness of this, conceivably delineating them by designating separate - and separating - Q&As after each one. Here, there will only be paragraph breaks to suggest that one should resist the urge to compare these two artworks despite their juxtaposition in this programme. For Dorsky's film, there is so much to say, and yet so little that needs to be said. Working in the same mode as...

For fans of experimental film, 2011 has been a year of heavy losses. Yet even as we mourn the deaths of pioneer filmmakers including Jordan Belson, George Kuchar, George Landow (aka Owen Land), and Adolphas Mekas, the 2011 Wavelengths programs at the Toronto International Film Festival indicated that experimental film is alive and well… and living in Canada.
Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure is a site-specific live projection performance that was a highlight of this year’s festival. In the projection booth, Brooklyn-based artists Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder distilled a found 35mm commercial film print into rich, gorgeous beams of light that danced on the screen, the auditorium walls, and the faces of the rapt, dreamy spectators who filled the theatere at the Ontario Gallery of Art. (The movie that was the basis for the work was never identified to the audience, and the artists have never watched it in its entirety.

Victories over classic villains are what makes our heroes necessary in the first place, and in time, each character becomes defined by the other's presence. One such landmark pairing, that of the detective Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty, has survived several decades and has seen portrayal in many mediums. As has been noted many times before, by me and others, the Wavelengths series of the Toronto International Film Festival is like a festival unto itself. So far removed from the red carpet nonsense, the deal-making, and the me-firstism of web journalists hoping to hit the Web with their initial impressions of some new Bryce Dallas Howard vehicle, Wavelengths affords breathing room to cinema and video at its most formally adventurous and, yes, uncommercial. We come here to look and listen, not to look “at” or listen “to,” and if that sounds hopelessly pretentious, come on down to the Jackman Hall and see for yourself. It’s actually quite cleansing, often funny, and a guaranteed good time, at least in part. (Short films are like the weather in my hometown of Houston, Texas. Don’t like it? Wait a moment. It’ll change.)
Sadly, Wavelengths 2011 will be the final year for series curator Andréa Picard.

I remember a time, not too long ago, when it seemed that combining horror and comedy successfully was a near impossibility. Don't get me wrong; there have been good ones, but most of them were too goofy, tried too hard, or simply could not blend the two genres well enough to service either. Hopefully Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre will buck that trend.

Caesar and Otto is a new entry into the horror-comedy genre, and it looks to follow in the footsteps of such laugh riots as Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Fido and of course Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

United Visual Artists A rendering of the main stage at Coachella 2011, designed by United Visual Artists
With only so much top talent to go around, behemoth music festivals have to put up with some overlap in their lineups. (The Strokes, for instance, are hitting Coachella, the Sweetlife Festival, Jazz Fest, and Bonnaroo in the space of two months, having covered Lollapalooza last summer.) Now, more than ever, festivals are selling themselves on atmosphere. Next in the quest for uniqueness: stage...

A Christmas Carol soundtrack. That Ebenezer Scrooge, what a downright nasty piece of work. No, we’re not talking the ‘before’ Scrooge here. Nothing wrong at all with being a tight-fisted miser. If we’d had a few more of them then maybe the global economy wouldn’t currently be sloping around like a hamster that’s swallowed a capful of bleach, hacking and retching as it feebly attempts to fend off the icy touch of the Grim Reaper. We instead refer to old Ebenezer after he’s tangled with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. Once he’s performed his volte-face and is leaping around like a prime candidate for the loony bin, supposedly in some twisted spirit of compassion and generosity. Scrooge instantly transmuted into the epitome of the nauseatingly chirpy reformed sinner, like the Hollywood star who has ingested every pill, powder and...

Bill Pullman may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think “genre veteran.” But the actor who is perhaps best known for such populist entertainments as Independence Day and While You Were Sleeping has taken a number of cinematic trips to the dark side, most notably under the guidance of the Lynch family. Having starred in David’s 1997 mind-teaser Lost Highway, he now can be seen as the lead in daughter Jennifer’s Surveillance, out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet Pictures banner.
Pullman stars in the film with Julia Ormond as FBI agents Hallaway and Anderson, who arrive at a rural police station to investigate a grisly roadside massacre. A trio of badly shaken witnesses survived the bloody incident, and the particulars of what happened gradually come together through their dramatized recollections as they are separately interviewed. One, a...

It's a rare movie that lets Bill Pullman be something other than the nice guy. Leave it to Jennifer Lynch to find it. It's taken Lynch over a decade to get back in the director's chair since the controversial Boxing Helena -- spinal surgeries and single motherhood being the causes of the delay -- but with Surveillance, she's created a twisted movie that will make you look twice, at...

Miami — DJ Irie has as many NBA championship rings as Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. He actually has one more than LeBron James and Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley and Dominique Wilkins combined.
"I'm the only DJ to have an NBA championship ring," Irie said, as his speedboat left the marina in Miami. "I didn't have to shoot no free throws, in-bound no balls. I definitely kept it funky and kept it hot and I reaped the benefits of being on a championship team."
Irie has been the Miami Heat's official DJ for the past decade. The marketing department sought him out after word got out that he was tearing up the Miami clubs with his turntables.
